      jose moutia Although you wrote this 3 years ago, I was Very pleased to hear that you discovered the great 'feelings' in Hank's playing and the overall Shadows 'sound.' I hope you really got in to the wonderful Shadows music. My fave Shads albums are definitely 'Jigsaw,' 'Guardian Angel,' From Hank, Bruce, Brian, and John,' 'Life In The Jungle,' 'Live' at the Sankei Hall, Japan,' and 'Second Opinion' by Marvin Welch & Farrar. I hope you too love All these albums by now, and that you got the chance to meet Hank, Bruce, Brian, Mark Griffiths, Cliff Hall, and Alan Jones. I've only 'briefly' stood next to John Farrar' but was not fortunate enough to meet him.😀

    Thank you Steve. Very nice video and extremely informative. I have great memories of meeting not just Hank and all the other 'Shadows' but the late Jet Harris who as you know was a very good 'and influential' bass player. (he sang good too) However, Hank's playing with that incredible feeling he has whatever guitar he uses is the greatest! Thanks again. Paul p.s: my brother's called Steve!

    I'm 73, and still, there is nothing like 60's music. Nothing comes close. Hank Marvin, often imitated, never beaten. I can't play a note, but I'm a good listener. That was a revelation for a couple hundred quid. Hank lives in Perth Australia, so I'm a neighbour. Hardly, but I'd love to bump into the man...

      Hi Steve, one more time respect. I'm now 50, and when I was young, The Shadows was the music of my parents era, but I love it from my child age till today and like to play it also, and I'm very happy, that there are young guys like you, who still find this music great.. And btw. amp modelling is still very delicate question. Don't know much about Helix, but there were plenty of modelling machines that I have tried (digitech, korg, Vox, line6.. etc) Best results were with the old Line6 pod and Boss gt100 (same as gt001). Now I'm very happy with two stomp boxes that works as an amplifier and cab simulation. They are the "Joyo" pedals, called "AC Tone" - for Vox like sound and "American Tone" - for Fender like amps. I think, the basics were stolen from originals Tech21 pedals. But they are very cheap and real great!!! Just a little tweaking with this all analog cirquits and you can have very warm and tube like sounds from ac15 through ac30 to ac...I don't know what else.. :- ) So I wish you good luck and one more thanks! @@SteveReynoldsGuitarist

    Hello Steve
    I have seen your videos several times. I'm in Shadows period I started classical guitar at 6 years old. I am 74 years old .... and I want to tease this music as you do. I wish to buy a guitar can be a little better than the Harley Benton and use the vox and G1X equipment that you recommend. Do you see an interesting Fender strat (if possible red) at less than 1000 euros? There are many and I am lost ....
    Thank you very much for your advice and congratulations again for your immense talent.

    VERY please to see young people still playing The Shadows stuff i thought it was all old gits like me and my mates. I first heard Apache when it came out in the 60’s! I had a mate who is also a Shadows nut so I taught him to play guitar from scratch he ended up better than me! He then played Bruces parts and a couple of others joined us on base and drums and we toured the pubs and clubs as the ‘Silhoettes’ during our days in the RAF. Taught myself by ear to play Apache when I was 10 dad bought me a guitar, playing it over and over until i nailed it! Keep it up ace!

    Thanks for this lesson Steve, I've just purchased my first guitar and amp after an absence of playing for 40 years. I cut the tips off all my left hand fingers and couldn't touch the strings without a lot of pain but now I think I've got to give it a try. Just so I didn't spend a fortune and still can't play I bought a Squire Affinity by Fender and a Fender amp. Hopefully with the right additions I might make it sound as good as you've made that one sound, um, I'll certainly not play as good though. Thanks again for this video it has been very helpful.

      Thanks for the reply Steve, I've only this last week found your UA-cam videos and I'm pretty much glued to them at the mo so thanks for that. Your style suits me as I've been a Shadows fan for more years than I can remember, almost back to the Drifters days so it's great to listen to you play and it's very relaxing too. I hope you don't mind me asking but strings? I've never seen so many different sets, sizes etc, I really have no clue as to which I should use so plumped for a couple of sets of 11 gauge 11-50 D 'Addario nickel wound strings, my question is would these suit a similar sound to your sound or is there a better string suited to help make that Hank Marvin sound? I would imagine you get these questions thrown at you often so I hope I'm not too annoying. Thanks again and hope you're all safe too.

    Interesting video, well explained and demonstrated, I think most Shadows fans would think that was a very reasonable sound. I was very interested to see that white Strat copy, I have a white Strat with a rosewood fretboard, it is supposedly a Japanese Fender built in 1996, before they started to use CIJ or MIJ. It has a serial number on the reverse of the headstock, it does have a Fender decal on the front, but it doesn't have a contour body decal on the front top, I bought it in 2001, I still wonder how authentic it is, but it plays like a dream.

    Steve, great comments on how to achieve the Hank Marvin sound. One thing I am intrigued about is the actual amplifier one uses. The Art D'Echo patches use the effect of an Ac30 twin 12 amplifier. If you then play through a Vox ac 30,or equivalent, are you doubling up on this effect. Should one just play through a good front of house so that what goes in the input is basically what comes out? Should the AC 30 be taken out of the effect chain if actually using an AC 30. Thanks Tony Mercer

      +Tony Mercer Hi Tony thanks for the comment, pleased you enjoyed.
      When i use the G1 i have the patches with amp modelling on for recording direct or if i need to use a PA etc but if i use it through an amp then i use it with the amp modelling turned off. You probably can use it with but you would need to eq the amp different etc and ive never tried it. Hope this helps

Is it possible to get some tips how to set up de Zoom-G1 Xon for playing Shadows, por example Theme for young loveres and other. Thank you in advance.

      Thanks Alvaro appreciate it. The patches on this were from Art Deco and you can now get them programmed via USB and drag and drop. Unfortunately they are patches you have to pay for but are available on eBay. Thanks

    forgive my ignorence but when you say gauge on strings what do you mean i use ernie ball regulars slinky from 10 to 46 should i use the heavier gauge with a zoom 508 with shads delays i put in myself and a boss compressor into a roland cube 80 amp and the sounds i get are ok but if the strings need to be heavier im open to advice regards keith

      Hi Keith nice to hear from you. Yes to be truly authentic you should have heavy gauge strings on but its not essential. EQ and Echo are more important as well as playing style. Hope this helps.

      +1phatmaximus HI Mac, thanks for the comment, i hope the video is helpful. Yeah the guitar was played straight out of the box so it needs a bit of a setup, the pickups are a bit low on the bass side. I will try and do some more of these sort of videos if they are of use. Hopefully me and dave will be getting together again to do a few more. all the best

    Hi Steve, could you advise the best VOLUME PEDAL to get the Shadows swell effect on there records? Also have you reviewed the FLASHBACK 2 echo as serious contender to achieve a authentic Shadows echo sound..... thanks great work John e

    • @SteveReynoldsGuitarist
      @SteveReynoldsGuitarist 5 років тому +1

      Hi John thanks for the message. there are many pedal capable of the swell effect but i use the Boss FV500H as they are readily available and a good price. An FV50H would also be ok as are the morley ones. I have never tried the flashback but i have heard good things about them. I tend to use the hall and collins or zoom g3x with echo patches for ease of use these days. Hope this helps

    Good job mate. But I'd like to add that you can get the same tone, if not a better quality tone from the Roland Micro Cube using just about any guitar but preferably a Strat for surf tones. You really don't need any pedals. The amp itself has fantastic effects and amp modelings.

    • @SteveReynoldsGuitarist
      @SteveReynoldsGuitarist 8 років тому +1

      +Ernest Mixco Hi Ernest thanks for the comment. The micro cube is a great amp but some of the shadows tracks used very distinct echo soundings that is impossible to get exact unless you use special units etc.

    Hi
    I was wondering if Hank Marvin used even the slightest amount of distortion on the 1960/61 recordings, maybe without realizing it? As you can see I play acoustic but I have got an American Strat and a Fender Twin but never have been able to imitate his 'Frightened City - FBI' type sound.

    • @SteveReynoldsGuitarist
      @SteveReynoldsGuitarist 8 років тому +1

      +steelyeyedmissileman Hi, nice to hear from you. Yes there was some distortion on some of the early tracks, this was caused by Hanks valve echo machine overdriving his amplifier when played hard on tracks like man of mystery and frightened city. Its difficult to capture this with digital units in quite the same way

  • @RadhaVijayanMFA

    • @SteveReynoldsGuitarist
      @SteveReynoldsGuitarist 7 років тому +1

    As stated in your video, a lot of the sound comes from the guitar player, having the right gear helps. I have tried for years to get Hank's sound, and whilst mine is passable, it's not up to your standard.
    An excellent guide for wannabe Hank fans, Squire have just released a special Run Strat in Fiesta Red with Gold hardware. at £349 it is well worth a look.
