- The amps and volts of a solar panel array can be affected by how the individual solar panels are wired together. This video is going to teach you how the wiring of a solar panel array affects it's voltage and amperage. The key takeaway to know is that 'Solar Panels in Series Adds their volts together' and 'Solar Panels wired in Parallel adds their amps together.'

Finally someone explaining not just the maths, but why you’d do it. I’ve been looking for this info for a while. Great job.
This is EXACTLY the video and information I've been looking for!!! THANK YOU!!
These are incredibly helpful videos brother! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Clearest video on the internet about this, clearer than the Will Prowse guy. Thank you
🙂👍
The quiz was great. I failed before your presentation, and passed after. I appreciate the work you put into the videos and the quiz.
Glad it helped!
Oh my! I’ve had sooo much trouble wrapping my mind around this! Thanks so much for the simple video. I learned so much in 10 minutes!
Awesome! Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
Me too. I need all the help I can get with this.
Thanks heaps for making this series currently fitting out a 2015 VW transporter with no prior knowledge and have found your videos really helpful.
I don’t often subscribe to channels but I found yours to be some of the best diy solar around. Thanks!
How could it still be confusing after the amazingly great way you’ve taught this. The combination of your succinct and accurate words alongside visuals was the best I’ve seen yet. Thanks for all the time you put to this.
Awesome! Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
@@EXPLORISTlife I'm going to watch all your videos, then work out a plan. If I post my plan here would you tell me if I'm right or wrong ?? Thank you
How are amps determined?
Thank you! GREAT explanation video. Much appreciated.
As one that has taught and instructed, having a interactive portion is a fantastic way of developing an understanding.
Keep up the great work.
Cheers Scott
This video really helped, seems so simple now. Basically add series that then run in parallel so the amps arent wildly high. Really helpful
Outstanding informational video Again! I reviewed this video 4 months ago, but it didn't sink in until I actually had the solar panels set up. I am humbled by your knowledge and help.
This series is fantastic! Some of the info you cover I already knew well, but I still fully enjoy watching. Even if you don't plan on doing any of this stuff yourself, if you own a solar system, you owe it to yourself to watch this series so you can at least understand what is going on with it.
Great job Nate! Kudos!
No problem. Happy to help!

@@EXPLORISTlife hello could you help me with the wiring of my pv array
@@boomblastjeno5226 For sure! That's what this video teaches you. Or perhaps you should just choose from the arrays we've already designed.

I'm all thumbs when it comes to electric work, but your videos are so good that I feel ok to try doing it myself.
Your videos are helpful. You helping a old man to be able solar up his Class A motorhome. I never want to old to learn. Thank You
Thank you - great informative video series. Maybe discuss the affect of the sun shading when hits the panels in "series" vs. "parallel" and then vs. "series/parallel" setups?
Series together with MPPT will often be the ultimate winner
excellent video, extremely informative! thank you explorist
Hey sw explorer, Thanks so much! Cheers!
Finally! Someone that explains things clearly and concisely. Subscribed!
Awesome, thanks! Welcome aboard!
UA-cam suggested this video. Since I have solar panel arrays and a few solar generators, I watched it. You did a wonderful job explain series/parallel hooks up. Showing the Ohm's law math will help people internalize this concept. Thumbs up and like.
Very important info, Loved it ✌️🇺🇸☮️🗽
I had my panels in parallel. Changing them into series-parallel really increased the amps into the batteries. My voltage into the charge controller was too low. Increasing the volts increased my amps. Thanks a ton for these very useful videos!
Gosh it's my first time trying to figure it out it's so confusing I don't think I'm ever going to be able to figure it out and I need to so bad they cut my power off and I'm trying to figure out how to make this work
Thanks Nate! I enjoy your you repeat the info (I.e. V times A equals W) each time you go through a schematic. This helps me memorize!
Awesome! Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
Sending a link to my professor at university , hope he learns how to teach like this! Clear diagrams, relaxed attitude and passionate about the topic . Inspiring . You can learn a lot from fellas like this chap .
Just keep watching again and again.
After about a year you will start understand enough to at least ask questions
I love ur way of explaining the dif panel configurations my question is when looking at the back of my 4 240w 37.2v panels i see 4 dif amp ratings im trying to figure out witch amp rating to go by 1. Maximum Power Current 7.89amps 2. Short Circuit Current 8.73amps 3.Maximum Serious Fuse 15amps 4. Minimum Bypass Diode 15amps when wiring witch amp rating u referring to ? thanks
240 ÷by 37.2 equals one of the numbers in the panel
What about a 3 way y split?
Your are incredibly helpful and this is by far the best video out there I've researched for helping to understand how to not only connect panels but in the best way. I'm about to put together my 6 panels to my bluetti and I'm actually excited because I have much more confidence now from your very clear tutorials. Thank you so much!!!
This is super useful stuff, thank you very much for posting this. You just got a new subscriber ;) I am pretty sure I'm gonna watch this a few more times until it's sinking in. Keep this type of content coming!
I was hoping you would address the function of the MPPT charge controller in how it coverts the surplus Volts into Amps and what the math is or how efficient the conversion is. Also, how the panels function when one panel is in shade and how that effects the output in V and A in Series vs Parallel.
Those are coming up in their own specific video. Stay tuned. :)
@@EXPLORISTlife, I am very interested in this as well. No one has covered this info that I have found. Any update on the time frame for the video? Thanks so much
@@EXPLORISTlife
I hope u also cover the difference in theory & practice of series/parallel...
ie. Parallel = higher current = more losses (so less efficient)
(& more expensive charge controller)
also fatter wire = higher cost..!
U should have mentioned it in this video as well...
Otherwise it's the best I've seen on this topic...
Great videos. Which configuration would charge a battery fastest? For example, does wiring it with higher voltage but less amps result in slower charging due to lower amps, or does the higher voltage increase the speed of charging?
Basis what I have, connecting in series would charge the battery quick than connecting the panels in parallel, but make sure the your mppt is capable of handling
It depends on your pv charge controller (pwm vs mppt)
This is such a great resource video! I finally have a full grasp how volts and amps can be adjusted for different needs ... and I passed your test, too! You just helped me overcome one of my biggest hurdles... Thank you!
The best most concisely explained example on UA-cam. Thank you so much, as this is exactly what I have been looking for.
Awesome! Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
The only confusing thing about all of this is which one is best to charge your batteries? When living in the van, you’re using amps, and concerned with how many AH your bank has. Do you want to push the most amps into the battery, or the most volts into the battery? Nobody bothers to tell you which is actually preferred or which will charge your batteries to full faster. Could you please cover this?!
Howmuch power is pushed in the battery does not depend on the series or parallel configuration. Higher voltage (more in series) means lower Amps for fhe same total power, thus smaller gauge wires, but more expensive charge controllers as he explains. You can calculate the amount of current into the battery by the power of the solar array (as you saw in this video all configurations with 4 panels had 400W) by rhe nominal battery voltage. Cheers!
With series and mppt combo you get the max output of your panels with the added benefit of smaller wires. Higher voltage systems give you more of a return on investment. In my opinion.
@@enki2gold Higher volts could kill
@@mas-udal-hassan9277 absolutely
@matthewjswider You want more Amps for charging! You only want your volts to be slightly higher than the battery you’re charging! If you have a 12v battery, you want a max of 13-14volts and between 3-40amps for charging, 3amp is slow charge, 10 amps is fast charge, and 40amps is rapid charge. Since most solar panels produce between 12-24volts, the charge controller sorts out the power differences and turns it into 13-14volts for charging. The closer you can get your solar panels to naturally putting out 14v and 10amps the less work your charge controller has to do and more efficient your system is
Wow I'm glad I hung around at least to listen to that you know I wasn't fully paying attention but I was letting it go on in the background to try to absorb as a supplementary video. I didn't know that anybody really spent the time to answer each and every question but I want to take you at your face that you do. That's kind of refreshing to have somebody actually go up and flat out say that you answer each and every question on occasion and I can't do that forever but either way that's admirable thank you I appreciate that. Id consult with you, even pay. But I don't want to waste your time, there are lost causes lol
This is awesome video. I just got a pair of panels to play with and trying to figure out how to wire. Thanks for the awesome explanation! :)
Wicked dude. Really enjoyed the quiz too, genuinely ironed me out!
Thank you so much, this is by far the best video about solar panels I ever watch
really thank you so much, you made me finally understand it 🙏🙏🙏
Awesome Nate, I think I can do it. I’m going to enjoy upgrading my current solar system on my 4wd and camper trailer… drawing what I’ve got while watching your videos helps make clearer what I need to do.
Awesome.... the clarification and how you slowly break things down into parts, which then allow folks to truly comprehend the information, to then apply it, is wonderful..
No problem. Happy to help!
This is a great video! Your way of explaining the way(s) to wire the panels is by far the best I have seen! You explained the methods very very clearly. Thank you so much for making this outstanding video!

What a great, clear easy-to-understand explanation! You have natural ability as a teacher.
Oh, I'll watch again before I take the quiz! Thanks!
Hey Tchiarito, Thanks so much! Cheers!
You are a teacher, you have the imagination to understand what the uninitiated don't understand, and take them through it. Some of the very big names in this field don't have that imagination - so thank you! Now off to try and find the quizzes you have kindly made for us, so thank you once again. If anyone is going to lead me through this maze, I suspect it's you!
Love the instructions and ease of understanding your video provides
Holy hell...this may be the most informative watts/amps/volts video I've ever seen. I'm in the process of getting solar panels setup on my backyard shed and this video helped so much at understanding the wiring.
Awesome! Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
This is the BEST explanation on UA-cam that I've found so far to know which charge controller to buy. Thank you.
Hey Jay'man, No problem! Glad it helped! :)
This is easily the best explanation I’ve seen to date on amps and volts for connecting solar panels. Wish I watched this before I bought four 200 watt panels with each panel running 12 amps into a Ecoflow delta max that can only handle 10 amps. Thanks!
Awesome! Glad it helped. 🙂👍
OMG!
You made everything so understandable and your wiring diagrams made it so easy to follow. I have gone to several sites and, while they were quite knowledgeable you made it so understandable. You are a great teacher. Thank you.

Great series! I started from learning what was a lug 😂!
Thank you so much for your great explanation. Thank you for sharing you time and knowledge. 🙏💪
Thank you! This finally made things clear! I have all the parts for a small but expandable system but have been afraid to hook it up. Damaging that expensive charge controller was my fear. 100/50 like you showed. Now, the next chance I get, I have the knowledge to install the system correctly. Thank you again!
Thanks a lot for all your videos . You have broken it down in a simple way that everyone can understand. One love

I appreciate that!
This was such a good helpful video it will make a big difference on the project I'm on! Thanks for sharing!
Dude, the light bulb finally went off for me after watching this. Thank you.
Hey, super Neuro divergent brain here. I was super confused at first on how to calculate your volts and amps when wiring in both parallel and series at the same time.
But I realized that it’s a lot more simple than you explained it, or at least, that’s how it seems to me. Essentially, you just take the volts and amps of one singular solar panel times the number of sections that you have.
It doesn’t matter how many panels are in each section. It only matters how many sections you have. If you have 6 sections, you times the Amps and volts by 6, if you have 4, you times each of them by 4
Thank you very much out of all of do UA-cam channels I watch on solar you are probably the best one and I love your little test
Hi there all the way from South Africa🇿🇦 love your videos

Hi, Nate, I'm Noel.
Great vid series man, thanks a heap, from Australia (a very sunny place!!)
I'm wiring up a 1050Watt system (3 x 350 W) on the roof of my Toyota Coaster bus/motorhome, so it seems I have no option but to go series wiring (because of the odd number of panels... did I get that bit right?) and wear the cost of the more expensive controller unit. Aaaah well... such is life (on the road)! But think of all that free rent!!!
She'll also be running on deep frier oil. Australia's a BIIIIIIG land! And we love our fish'n'chips. Friers are cookin' from one end to the other.... and people are generous.
The go-to oil here in OZ is Cottonseed... excellent bio-fuel.
Thanks again, Nate. Very helpful, mate.
Your a brilliant teacher, I actually learned a lot from you. Thank you👍👍👍
Hey Parmorama, No problem! Glad it helped! :)

Dude thank you so much for these examples. Specifically the price comparison and the 6 panels setup as that’s exactly what I’m doing and I bought the 150/60 controller, but have time to return it and save money with the less expensive controller!! Thanks again!
Also it doesn’t show on the diagram but do I need a fuse for this setup? Thanks again!!

Hey Buddy. I love the videos. Detailed explanations and you answer what viewers are going to ask lol. Your pace of talking is almost as calming as the BBC Planet Earth guy too lol. I did want to mention that I've tried your super helpful charge controller calculator. Thank you for creating it! I don't know if you have an amazon affiliate link for the recommended item, but no matter which item the calculator recommends the link seems to go to the same 75v/10A controller. Cheers
Ahh... the vendor changed up their product page. The link USED to go a page with all of the charge controllers on one page. I'll make an adjustment. Thanks for the heads up.
Love it. This series is making the difference in my installation. thanks!!
Great to hear!
Hi Nate - I love your videos! You are my 'go to' for anything electrical in the van we're building, and we're going to use your diagrams and the Amazon links so we get exactly what we need. SUPER helpful. Thanks so much. One question: I may be using your calculator incorrectly, but I'm using 200W solar panels that have a maximum voltage output of 68.7V. When I put in all the other values in your calculator, it tells me the Amp output is 16 amps per panel. This seems high, and the specs of my panel say maximum current is 3.59 Amp per panel. Google says amps = watts/volts, so I was expecting it to be under 3 amps per panel. Why does your calculator show 16 amps (and it doesn't change if I change my Voltage, which doesn't seem right). Help!
You're a good teacher. I scored 100%!
I have never seen a UA-cam video with so many thousands of like so zero dislikes; that folks tells you something of the quality and clarity of this vlogger.
