I feel Like the primal theory was a great episode, because it showed us how all of us have a primal instinct inside of us. And I feel like genndy decided to put this after The red mist because spear and fang were forced to kill these innocent people.

I mean, I don’t know if they were really “innocent.” They pillaged villages and civilizations for slaves.
Sure, that was fairly common in ancient civilizations, but so was violence. But, if we’re applying modern notions of morality to the series - then I feel like we really don’t need to feel bad about the Vikings being slaughtered.

I liked season 2 well enough, the Red Mist has to be THE best episode and The Primal Theory the worst in my opinion.
But the last minute of the finale episode was a major WTF minute.
Why would Fang just roar and storm out of the hut once she realizes Spear is going to die? Them and us deserved a more drawn out and heartfelt send off because their bond and friendship were so great. Like at least have Spear pat her snout and her whimper sadly before she roars and leaves.
I dunno, story wise, I’m fine with Spear dying at the end and Mira carrying on his legacy, but it feels his and Fang’s parting was rushed.

Completely agree, just finished the show and my immediate takeaway was: That stupid Primal Theory episode inflicted a toll on the 2nd half of the season’s pacing, and Mira just mounting a dying Spear felt really uncomfortable. Having Fang just leave Spear to die was massively unsatisfying, and was clearly done so there would be enough time for the mercy-sex and send-off epilogue. All things considered, it’s not a bad ending overall, just had some noteworthy flaws that left fans like myself with mildly saddening disappointment, as the rest of the show is a fantastic journey I’d wanna see again for the first time

there were a lot of things that bothered me about season 2 in hindsight tbh§
outside of the weird ending, there were a lot of questions that just sort of went unanswered, which by itself wasnt nessecarily a problem (mysteries can be fun) but it felt like we were going to get some sort of pay-off concerning the scorpion symbol.
Scorpions are not native to scandinavia, so the immediate assumption is that the vikings were working for the scorpion for one reason or another.
I thought maybe the egyptian pirate chick was working for the scorpion, or maybe fighting against the scorpion, but ultimately it just boiled down to a battle montage of attacks on various cities.
the fact that the colosseus episodes could be skipped almost entirely and you'd miss nothing is very bothersome.

i just think its kinda weird that those giant guys were just rowing the boat, like i assumed they were pacifist or something but when they did revolt it turned out that wasnt the case so like why didnt they revolt earlier, literally just one of them was fighting armies meanwhile there was like 50 of them who couldve escaped but chose to row the boat instead?

    • @kindlingking
      @kindlingking Рік тому +9

Psychological factor. Their culture is clearly very pacifistic, so they are not likely to follow their emotional bursts and start killing people. They are kept under constant watch inside a giant ship that resembles a small city. And everytime one of them shows disobedience, he's probably brutally and more importantly publically punished. They needed a leader, who could show them there's a chance to get their freedom back and inspire them to fight for it.

Pros: "It's an Experimantal Episode that truly has some great horror aspects to it," with a spine chilling sense of build up. I loved season 2 but I couldn't empathize with the viking chief at all. Everything that happened to him was avoidable, he lost his family but that happened because of their own transgressions, Spear did not seek them out to satisfy some blood lust, he did it to save someone he loved that was captured and would have suffered at the hands of the vikings.

    Primal and samurai jack spoilers:
The only thing that sat wrong with me, other than the offputting ending moment with Spear and Mira was the Viking fire revenge demon.
Idk, even though I know this world isn't realistic, nothing was explicitly supernatural. Magic yes, potions, cults, sure. But everything was still mortal and therefore grounded in the sense that they could be overcome. Every foe Spear and Fang ran into could be killed. The Viking demon couldn't be killed as far as we know. Even after pushed off the cliff, he got up fine. Once Spear was mortally wounded, that part of the satanic deal was met and he was dragged back to hell.
It just seemed like a deus ex way to kill Spear. Both seasons wrote themselves into a corner by making Spear and Fang hyper resilient to wounds.
Spear was so OP it literally took something unkillable to kill him. And I just think that was kinda cheap and was a disservice to spear. Spear faced what the living world could throw at him and survived it. As far as I was concerned he earned to live a life with Mira.
The age of the Neanderthal in its pure form ending, but Spear overcoming it all and still leaving his mark through a half Neanderthal daughter.
Genndy just doesn't like to let his romantic characters live 😂 He did the same thing with Samurai Jack s5, where he kills off a happy ending at literally the very last 60 seconds of the series out of the blue.

Yeah from what I'm hearing he doesn't do the best job with endings which is a shame cause everything else is at minimum solid. I do agree I wish the fire demon at least took some damage cause otherwise, the deus ex demon lord or whatever it was does make his defeat really unsatisfying.

I chose Primal thinking it was a series about prehistory with dinosaurs which the last episode of the first season deprived me of and I didn't even feel like moving on to the second season. However, when I did move it eventually I felt totally cheated with the ending, a crappy ending with a weak resolution of the plot of the Viking, Spear and Fang, the rape scene on the corpse and the transition to the daughter, all of this deliciously spoiled the series for me, the third season I am unlikely to watch. For me it was the story of Spear and Fang with the death of one my adventure with it will rather end.

For the final fight, on one hand it's kind of fitting that such a deadly fight was brutal and short, it fits with the show. Although of course such a built up fight from a storytelling perspective still would have felt more satisfying if it was just a little bit longer.

    1. "The Primal Theory" may not have any narrative ties to the show, but it does have ties thematically. It shows how important it was on a thematic level when the show has to break its "no talking" rule just this once to get something verbally across, and that something I myself have believed long before this episode: that no matter how evolved and "civilized" we may call ourselves we're still animals to the very core and we're capable of reverting back to a primitive for if in a life-or-death/fight-or-flight scenario when survival is at stake. Also, I think saying "it should have been left out" is unfairly harsh.
    2. While I do like your idea for the finale, I am honestly fine with the way it is. If the point of your idea is that Spear's sacrifice is meant to act as redemption from the first episode, well, he already did with the episode already as it is. And for those proclaiming Mira's final act was "rapey": grow the hell up, you prudes.
    3. In relation to #2, contrary to what others say, there was really no other way the final battle would have played out given how powerful the Fire Demon was made to be. I see him as a mix The Mad Sauropod, The Coven Witches, and a reversal of The Night Feeder: like the witches, The Fire Demon is a supernatural being with powers Spear & Fang are of no match for; like The Mad Sauropod, all they can do is run as there is no effective way to fight him let alone touch him; and unlike The Night Feeder, The Fire Demon has no exploitable weaknesses. What I'm saying is that, realistically, this was always destined to be a short fight.

then spear, fang and her kids go into there new home/house then spear draws his story and Mira now knowing his story sad at first but quickly smiles in hopes his legacy will live sense she have announced that’s she pregnant to spear yet now that there hinting on and build up JW there officially a couple and Mira’s father approves then it ends with spear, fang & Mira looking on there village not knowing what the future will hold for them but they do know that they’ll can get through anything they can throw at them

Sorry if this comes off as a rant, but I'm very disappointed with how this season of Primal turned out. If you don’t want to read through all this, don’t. However, I’d appreciate reading the list of things I’d change if given the chance in my first reply since I put way more thought into this than I'm willing to admit. The first 4 episodes were good because we picked up right where we left off in season 1 and remained with the characters we've been following since the beginning. We were also introduced to some new characters who were given a pretty decent amount of depth even if they only appeared in the episode they were introduced in. While their pacing is definitely something I find to be unsatisfactory, many episodes in season 1 felt that way too so I'm not all that fussed about it. I am irate about episode 5 though. It feels like some higher-up(s) wanted to launch their own spinoff show by leeching off of Primal's success. I don't think it contributes anything to the series at all apart from wasting time and space that could have been devoted to enhancing the story that was already being told. If I were given charge of the show, I would scrap that episode of the show entirely in favor of using that time, space, and money for the last 2 episodes of the season. Then episodes 6-8 happened and while they are strangely paced in several places (much like the rest of the show), they're much better than 5 and they put the story, characters, and plot back on track. I feel the same way about episode 9 up until the very last clip where the demon dude is walking on water toward the Colossaeus. The way the clip is framed makes it seem like he's about to destroy the ship but before we get any confirmation of that being the case, the screen cuts to black and the episode ends. I understand that it's supposed to set up the events that occur in the last episode, but it ends up kind of making it seem like us witnessing the giant freeing himself, his daughter, and people all just so they could die anyway because of something that has nothing to do with them. The demon dude is after Spear and Fang (probably Mira too). Why would he go after them unless they actively got in his way? I would have shown him just walking past the ship after a moment of suspense. It would give viewers a sense of "Oh shit! He doesn't care about them, he just wants Spear and Fang." Now we get into episode 10 which is, in my opinion, the second worst episode in the series. It's only beaten out by "The Primal Theory" because unlike that episode, this one is not bad because it doesn't contribute anything. This one is bad because, for whatever reason, it was rushed to hell. To start off, the first half of it I think is fine. I wouldn't change much aside from maybe giving Mira and Spear more chances to mingle since they barely had any time to do that before. The second half is where things get dicey because a lot happens in such a short span of time. Spear and Fang duke it out with the demon dude, Fang nearly dies, Spear sacrifices himself to save everyone, Mira bangs him before he passes away, Fang's children and Spear's child grow up, and the episode ends after Spear and Fang's kids let out a unified shout/roar. I'm mostly fine with the order of events that occurred. My problems are how quickly they occur and both girls' reactions to Spear's inevitable death, particularly Fang's. It's way too watered down considering the significance of the event. When the healer delivers the news to the girls, Fang, who's known Spear longer than anybody on screen, been through thick and thin with him, was saved from death on multiple occasions by him, got him out of numerous pickles herself, and who’s given up her mate for life to save, just roars loudly with a moderately distressed look on her face and walks away with her kids at her feet. I think this honestly irritates me more than the rest of the flaws of this show because this moment was such an easy thing to make emotionally compelling. It also fucked up one of the most important characters in the series writing-wise. All the animators, editors, sound designers, and composers had to do was slow that scene down dramatically and have the characters act as they would be given the situation. Fang being a dinosaur would not be able to understand the severity of Spear's injuries. She knows that he's badly hurt, but not that he'll be dead momentarily. At this moment, Mira would likely try explaining the bad news to her while in tears; saying something along the lines of "He's not going to make it." in her native tongue. Fang still being unable to understand but becoming increasingly more worried would be as shocked to hear Spear try to communicate with them as Mira. The moment she hears his voice, Fang would lean her head down next to his to try to understand him, only to get the impression that all he wants is for her to go on without him, live her life, and raise her children the best she can. As soon as Fang comprehends his dying wish, she gives him a loving nuzzle as a sort of goodbye (her children probably do the same) while whimpering much like she did in Episode 2 “Shadow of Fate” for her mate. Fang and her beautiful offspring then slowly but surely make their way out of the building so Mira and Spear can do their thing. Not the thing they did that may or may not have been consensual, but the whole saying their goodbyes thing. I would have had the romance between them occur at least one more episode before that one (I explain my thought process more in the list below). So if you were to ask me what I would do if I was Genndy Tartakovsky and I was told that this season of Primal would be the last one I could work on by higher-ups, here’s what I’d do with varying levels of specification.

    • @coreys.2456
      @coreys.2456 Рік тому +1

      1. Keep episodes 1-4 and 6-9 relatively the same. There’s very little wrong with them and not much to improve upon. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
      2. Scrap episode 5 entirely. It's a waste of time and space that could have been devoted to fleshing out the ending. Yes, it would be good to experiment, but not with a show that already has an established narrative that’s been put on a major time crunch. “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”
      3. Have the fire demon dude walk past the Colossaeus ship without hurting anyone on it because he has no reason to kill them (yet). This would give the audience a sort of “oh shit” moment as they realize Spear and Fang have a massive threat approaching. This could also foreshadow what might happen in the finale.
      4. With the extra time I’d get from scrapping “The Primal Theory”, I would split the finale into two parts. The first one would focus on what the first half of “Echos of Eternity” did but it’ll be more drawn out than before. Spear and Mira would also have more time together here to air out their feelings. Obviously, Mira would be doing most of the pursuit while Spear is kind of reserved and unsure whether this is a good idea. He’d eventually agree when he realizes he would leave behind an incredible legacy and have fun with her at the very least. After some time of them doing their thing, Mira ends up pregnant. Now, there are 2 ways the show could potentially go from here. The main trio could possibly celebrate the pregnancy before the fire demon dude shows up and battles Fang and Spear, or Mira could assure Spear on his deathbed that she is expecting a child soon. Either one works so long as Fang has a more emotional reaction after she’s given the unfortunate news, and the final battle occurs in the 1st half of the second part of the finale.
      5. At a low point of the final battle for our main duo and the village their protecting, a surprising ally comes in with the clutch: the giants. They do their best to apprehend the demon dude and get pretty far in that regard. However, his infernal fury will only be quenched with the death of the man he came to kill. The man who slaughtered his people, destroyed his home, and killed his son. With as much strength as he could muster, the demon dude sends the giants, any townsfolk helping them, and the main duo reeling back from a powerful explosion that incinerates the terrain. When the smoke clears, Spear, Fang, some giants, some villagers, and the demon dude are left on a fractured mountain peak surrounded by searing flames. Exhausted but determined, The demon dude stands back up catching his breath. In doing so, his identity is revealed as the chieftain from “The Red Mist”. Spear looks in shock as a result of this revelation and after some time trying to recover from injuries sustained by the explosion, he sees his allies trying desperately to stop this monster to little avail. The giants continue to be pushed back by vicious infernos and the villagers can’t even lay a finger on him before they’re burned to a crisp. But when all hope seems lost, Fang bursts out from a smoldering cloud nearby running fast and hard. Her roar deafening, her footsteps earthshaking, and her courage undying. Fang manages to score several significant blows to the demonic chieftain, but when it becomes increasingly clear she can’t keep this up, Spear makes the decision to sacrifice his own life by taking the vengeful chieftain with him for a trip down the mountain. Spear looks back for a brief moment toward the village as well as his beloved Mira and prepares his last spear using nearby rubble and perhaps a strand of his own hair to hold the weapon together. Wasting no time, the caveman charges into the fray with his spear in hand shouting like a madman. Right before the ireful chieftain can finish off a worn-out Fang, he turns to face his incoming attacker and despite his great might, he’s unable to halt Spear’s advance. The noble hero drives the tip of his spear through the chief while simultaneously sending them both off the edge of the cliff. When their bodies hit the floor, only one of them remains moving: the chieftain. But unfortunately for him, he’s unable to stand as the spear driven into his gut by the enemy has pinned him to the Earth. Right as he checks to see if his opponent has been vanquished, he notices a broken and charred man lying motionless on the floor. It's Spear, and it's clear that he’s either gone or will be soon. The chieftain looks to the sky with a look of glee. His work is done. He continues lying on his back waiting to finally depart from this world and accept the warm embrace of death. However, before he can even close his eyes, he’s jerked awake by a black hand performing a vice-like grip on his body and lifting him off the ground. Vidarr isn’t done with him, yet. He’s got much to do before he even has a chance to rest in peace. As I once said, “Don’t make a deal with the devil unless you can find him in the tiniest of details.” Once the hand drags the chieftain to his doom, Mira can arrive at the scene with the help of Fang alongside the giants and villagers to assess the damage. From here the rest of the finale can play out as previously mentioned: with Spear saying his goodbyes to both his beloved woman, friend, the babies, and his unborn child. Once he’s passed away, a transition to a funeral occurs. This funeral would be dedicated to all those lost as Spear is just one of many casualties accumulated by the colossal conflict. Following the funeral, we are shown the same ending as the original with the gang all grown up and preparing for a new journey.
Again, I’m so sorry this comment is as long as it is. I just had to get this off my chest and as I kept writing, more ideas continued pouring in. If anyone did read this, then holy shit! You are a real one! If you have any thoughts please feel free to reply. I hope to be more compact and concise next time lol. Stay safe, carry on with your calling, and have a good one! :)

I fully agree. I personally enjoy Primal Theory for entertainment but it's extremely frustrating that ot detracted the season and costed us a proper finale. While I didn't mention it in the video the fact that Fang and Spear don't really get a proper goodbye makes it really unsatisfying as well since their relationship is the core of the show considering all they have been through.
It's a shame cause if the last two episodes were dedicated to giving more time to the finale then season 2 could have been great but it's a shame that of all the episodes that got botched the fact that it was the finale really stings.
Loved your version of how it should have gone. I enjoy reading everyone's different versions of how it should have ended. Thanks for commenting yours.

@@MyNameisCameron Your welcome! Analyzing entertainment media and coming up with ways to enhance it are things I take a lot of pleasure in doing.
Unfortunately, I don’t have enough time to do what you do here on UA-cam (at least not right now). I also don’t have the technological talent either despite being a college student but one day that may change. I’m currently working on my drawing skills so I can later branch off into other categories of visual art like animation, photography, and editing. I’ve got a lot of plans for the future and am fully intent on seeing them through. In the meantime, thanks for sharing and I wish you well! ;D

@@coreys.2456 I wish you luck in your journey. My advice is to just start as soon as you can with the most basic equipment you got cause you are able to learn alot from that first year which is what I did. But thanks again for the comments and good luck with the college life.

@@coreys.2456 your version is way better than what we got however i would add a few things.
      1. i would show that spear is not comfortable in the village . he's too human to ever return to the wilderness but also too savage to ever belong with the villagers.
      2. as spear passes away he see's a vision of his family from the first episode. his mind now at peace knowing the village is safe.
i think these would wrap the series up with a nice bow. and if they somehow got an eleventh episode i think primal theory could be a fun epilogue but it should be just that. a fun extra for when the main story has been wrapped up.

Sadly I didn't really like season 2. I think it is as good and sometimes even better than season 1 but only before the stuf about the queen. I think it is suuuuper out of place and even though I like some stuf like the character of the giant overall it just feals like its something that hapens just cuz and then ends. It also doesn't come across as black and white at all, like the queen is strait up evil for no reason. Also the finale is super weard, and Im talking about just the ending scene, but the fact that they set up the flame demon for like 3 or 4 episodes just for him to show up, kill spear in a verry meh way and die.

idk I didnt really empathize with the scorpion cheif and the vikings overall. Pretty much the whole fight in the village I kept thinking "Spear and Fang are risking their lives to rescue slaves and are trying to escape while the vikings are literally willing to die where they stand just to keep their slaves", it was quite clear that Spear and Fang werent trying to simply kill them all but to escape with their lives, and the vikings on the other hand clearly werent simply trying to survive considering they kept chasing the massive dinosaur while its trying to run away. If a dangerous animal is running away and you are trying to survive than you let it keep running, the vikings at this point are either killing out of spite or killing to keep their enslaving lifestyle. point is fuck the vikings and I was quite pleased they got what they deserved

This season sucked imo, the whole thing interested in me season 1 was ultra violence, necessary evil and the victims of it, and NO DIOLOGE. This season was much less violent imo not much "necessary evil" and wayyyyyyyyyyy too many people.
