Go ahead and give yourself permission to DNF books. Remember, too many books, too little time. Even if you pre-ordered the book and it’s a special edition and signed; don’t worry about that. Just DNF it!
I really appreciate that you discuss books you didn't enjoy. Critical reviews are just as important as positive ones in helping people choose what to read next. Also, I might have to steal "mid-ass" 😋 Thanks and have a happy holiday season!
Whenever you need to add a book to the DNF pile, it's ok. Time is precious. If a book and I aren't vibing, I break up with the book. "It's not you, it's me."
Even if I end up not agreeing on some of the points, I genuinely like that you’re doing books you don’t like. So much of book reviews feels “influencer-y” or they’re just straight up an ad and I’m happy to see a genuine opinion that you’ve clearly thought out well. So happy I found your channel this week!! Binging your channel has been a highlight of my week.
Almost everything you said about Lady Macbeth is how I felt about A Study in Drowning, which is why I took Lady Macbeth off my list after finishing Study lol.
Thank you for not spoiling the books AND giving them a proper dressing down because if you’ve wasted time on bad writing or a shoddy plot you deserve to screech from the rooftops for at least 15 minutes.
had to pause to say while i agree overall re: incidents, she wasnt saying "daddio/daddy-o", she was saying "daddo" lmfao 😂 not a huge difference and ultimately was annoying either way (and def led to her sounding more toddler age than 8 years old?????) but felt the need to say this was not a child channeling like a 50s greaser kghdkjg
I related to your comment about not caring about the characters. I’m currently reading a book called The Middlesteins and every single character is completely unlikable. You start to actively root against them leading you to wonder if that’s actually the author’s point. 🤔
Flowers in the attic, hands down. I had read it soooo long ago, and I didn’t remember hardly anything. I wish I could go back to not remembering most of that book. It just solidified that VC Andrews is not an author for me.
I own a physical copy of Butcher and Blackbird because I got sucked into the hype. I haven’t read it yet, but everything you said sounds like it would annoy me too 😂
I loved Ninth house and am reading Hell Bent right now :D i was looking forward to The Familiar, but after your rant i am not sure anymore 😅 also, unpopular opinion - i hated the Priory... I know lot of people loved it - but it just didn't do it for me, but also like you said, i hate to DNF, mostly because i hate if i don't finish something i started, but i wish i had, because the book is a door stopper and took me a lot of time i could use to read something i really like :/ never mind, just wanted to tell you i love your videos and keep it up! and also Merry Christmas
It is such a hard judgement call to DNF a book. I'm with you on thought that "maybe if I read a bit more and give it a chance"....but rarely does that turn out to be true. I normally regret the wasted time/effort but hey, you never know if you don't give it go. Some books have actually surprised me - I start out hating the premise but then a solid twist happens and makes the first part actually plausible. The only truly awful book I DNF'd this year was "The Ritual". Hated it with every fiber of my being. If you read it and liked it, good for you but I thought it was awful. I hear that it is a movie but no way would I go see it. The first time I have EVER given a book one star and that was being generous.
I feel like DNF more books this year then what I can remember. The one sticks out in my brain is the handy man method by nick cutter. I read about 100 pages I hoping it would stick with me and I just couldn’t get into it. Didn’t like the story line.
Thank goodness I'm not the only one who thought Incidents around the House was boring AF and not in the least bit scary. I couldn't understand the hype around this book.
Paused the video to take both The Familiar and Incidents Around the House off of Libby holds. I read samples of both and felt very "meh" but was hoping they'd get better with all the hype behind them! I appreciate your video so much letting me know they both didn't 😅 Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay was by far my biggest letdown this year as I've loved everything else by him I've read!
Ok people will hate me for this but I DNF Jane Austens 'Emma'. I dropped it after 110 pages circa. And i normally love old classics where little happens 😅
The only book in this video that I've read (listened to) was Incidents Around the House. I completely agree that Bela does not read like an 8 year-old. I wanted to know why Bela was pursued by Other Mommy or some explanation where that evil entity came from. I didn't think it was that bad, but I understand the critique. I wonder if I'd have liked it less if I was reading it. Thanks for posting!
Lol I had the SAME exact feeling about Education in Malice, Incidents Around the House, and Butcher and Blackbird. Education just was sooooooo meh. It felt very superficial and bland. I thought I was the only one who didn't like Incidents. It was one of my worst reads of the year because of all the hype surrounding it.
I utterly love Ava Reid's first two books (you'd probably like The Wolf and the Woodsman as well), but I knew the moment she was publishing a Lady MacBeth retelling or reimagining it would not be for me and I'd not read it 😂 My worst book of 2024 is Rest Stop by Nat Cassidy or Manunt by Gretchen Falker Martin. Garbage fr fr.
I’ve been on the fence for Butcher and Blackbird but I never read romance novels. I don’t like them. I’m afraid it’s gonna be a lot like Dexter with the “good” killers kill worse people.
@ I even gave up on that series after the Trinity Killer, in the show played by John Lithgow, none of Dexter’s advisories held up except for the Ice Truck Killer of the first season.
My worst books were "The God of the Woods" by Liz Moore. Way to long, def not thrilling, more of a basic boring mystery. The other one is "you shouldnt have come here" by Jeneva Rose. I dont like romances and the whole book in the beginning (i dnf'd at about 35%) was just a romance basically. I just couldnt do it.

Your whole opinion about "Butcher and blackbird" was the same as mine and I only read 5 pages!!! I couldn't stand the protagonists

I am so glad someone else did not like Lady Macbeth. It was a travesty, a watering down of the strong badass woman The Bard wrote. It was soooo bad.

I just took out Lady Macbeth from the library. Thanks for the review. I may DNF this one. But I'll give it a go.
Incidents around the house was GARBAGE. I hated the mom and the ending was sooooo stupid. It was a book club read or I would have DNFd.

Sounds like you had a good year of reading, at least. It's a small list when you've read 94 books :)

Butcher and Blackbird = Rowan and Sloane. It is a trilogy. Did not read. Probably won't.
