  • Independent Drum Lab has become one of the most innovative brands in the drum industry since its launch in 2015. Josh Allen used his Industrial Design Degree at Ludwig to create many innovative designs and products, but he then decided he wanted to go off on his own and create INDē Drums. I own one of his kits, replaced my 60s Ludwig spurs with his, and only use INDe strainers. Absolutely love it.

I have a Kalamazoo kit in 12/14/18/24, plus a bronze snare and a maple snare. They all RULE, and I’m not done buying from Josh and team. Every detail is genius - the lugs, the brackets, the legs… Form follows function, and the pricing is so damn reasonable. Also, Josh is super helpful and great t9 communicate with.

I am a big fan of Josh’s work . I have owned a kit and four snare drums. I also own his ultralight throne. I retrofit my 68 Ludwig Superclassic kit with his rail mount upgrade, Br2 mounts and aluminum gull wing spurs. These upgrades made this classic kit sound better and made it more gig worthy. His snare drum strainer is brilliant . Now if Josh would design some lightweight stands and a bass drum pedal. .......

Thanks Bart and Josh for an awesome pod about Indie' drums. Drummers don't realize the importance of the manufacturing processes. After many years of playing -manufacturing is going full circle- I realized the basic concept of K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple stupid). Modern Technology has vastly over manufactured drum equipment, and unless you have roadies to cart and set up your gear, working musician's needs are Functionality, Portability and Affordability. Indie' has rightly so engineered these traits. It is very important to have engineers that can relate to musicians and vice versa.🎯

Bart, I literally was going to comment on a video yesterday morning that you should do an episode on INDe. Awesome. I met Josh and his Dad at the Chicago Drum Show this past May. They both are SUPER KIND people. Love supporting a company like that! Good people and a great product!!

I'd like to see him sell adjustable hole spacing lugs that will fit lots of brands that are attractive.

I LOVE this company and what Josh does. He's truly innovating and pushing the instrument forward. I wish I would have gotten on board during the "bargain years", but I had been playing maple for SO long that I just didn't want another maple kit. If however he were offering the truly unique INDe build in birch, I'd be all over it regardless of the current price point.
My personal preferences aside, there are some GREAT add-ons/replacements for drum hardware INDe builds that are definitely worth looking into. The strainer system Josh first designed for Ludwig and which I am sure he has improved since then, currently adorns my Black Beauty and let me tell you; It's MILES beyond the old P-series unit which has been an industry standard forever. The action is even and smooth as silk, and I LOVE the "ratchet" feel on the tension knob. Excellent!

I was so happy my snare drum /drumcraft brand needed new strainer mechinism seen heard about the inde strainer throwoff without drilling. It was best thing ever as i refused to drill more holes in my very special series 7 Siberian Birch / thanks INDe@wesome❤

Awesome interview. I purchased an aluminum WaFarer kit 12x6 15x10 20x10 with a 14x6.5 matching snare. Being a drummer that gigs 9-10 shows a month, I will say that this kit sounds great and really gives a lot punch with a ton of warmth. Every time I sit and perform I am super excited to play INDe Drums. Everything holds up well, I highly recommend these drums to anyone. Josh Allen is also very easy to work with. This interview just validates his commitment to the drumming community. Keep up the great work.

I live in Australia 🇦🇺 and just received a maple 🍁 Wafarer kit with extra brackets etc. Apart from a great sounding kit, it weighs HALF of my Sonor Delite kit. I’ve reduced my gear weight by about 20kg sore 45lbs and I can carry my kit to a venue in 2 trips. It’s brilliant. And I have a 12,15,20 kit plus one of their lovely bronze snares.
    Couldn’t be happier.

Name recognition on a resume is nice, but often the name on the door belies what happens inside. Sometimes the "Oh! You work for XYZ!" thing can actually work against you when changing jobs or careers. Never let a name keep you from doing what will make you happy.

I really like the INDē TimbaToms including a 15-inch that Josh made for me. I'm hopeful that INDē will consider adding a 22-inch TimbaBass. Maybe one of these days...🤞

I know Indie from their L arm ride cymbal mount. Everything that I saw online I would have to drill holes and how am I supposed to do that for an acrylic kit? And why would I want to do that in the first place? Now that I know he worked on the atlas gear for Ludwig, that makes total sense.

Nothing starts out overengineered (well... not too many things). Instead, things start out at a reasonable amount of complexity, then someone says "oh--your X was great! Can you add this to it?" A few years of saying yes that, and pretty soon you have too much complexity--"overengineered." Saying no is harder.
