Reviewing this amp was a must for this channel, thanks for it. I use an APPJ - a Chinese OEM but otherwise identical version - to drive 99 dB/W Audio Nirvana single driver speakers. Together they present a no compromise tube sound. Powerful lows, smooth, transparent mids and highs, great sound stage. This little amp may look like a toy but with the right speakers it performs like nothing has a right to perform at anywhere near $180. It should be taken very seriously indeed.

I’ve had my Tube Cube for over 15 years now. I became aware of it from a Stereophile Magazine review. I use it to play vinyl from my Music Hall turntable going through a Project tube phono preamp to the Tube Cube. It’s output goes to a pair of NHT sealed stand speakers (NHT recommends a 25 watt amp). The quality of playback is true bliss with a wonderful soundstage!

I just got my TubeCube I7. Got NOS tubes coming for it (RCAs from the last century) but, out of the box, after about 4 hours play time, it sounds awesome! I got pretty good gear to go with it, a pair of Klipsch B-200 speakers (92.5 db sensitive), an Iris DDC and a Pontus II DAC, and good AQ cabling. Everything helps to bring out the potential of this little jewel of an amp. It is a great buy and a thoroughly enjoyable, quite musical amp for my near field setup. Three tube amp watts can go a long ways! I'll be waiting nearly a year by the time I get my Decware Super Zen Triode amp next April to go into my main rig, fed by the same Iris/Pontus combo and powering with 3.5 w/ch my Klipsch Forte IVs. You could say that horns have won me over. They are a super match of well-designed low powered tube amps. Heaven on earth! Thanks for your review.

Fantastic review of a killer little tube amp. Replacing the EL84’s with the military grade Sovteks pays you back in spades with quality and volume of sound.

    • @ChoySekMunSimon
      @ChoySekMunSimon 2 роки тому +3

yes, Sovtek made some really good EL84 valves which I have used on a borrowed Leak Stereo 20 amp as well as a musician's vintage VOX guitar amp. They were really affordable and rugged enough to survive being over driven in the guitar amps used by those studio secessionists.

Bought this a few weeks ago. Granted, I use it in a pretty near-field listening environment (8ft), but powering a pair of Elac debut 5.2s (86db, also, thanks, Randy!!) I rarely get it past 9 o’clock on the volume dial. If you’re concerned about power, and not using it in a giant room, don’t be.
The sounds is really fun compared to a similarly priced SMSL. It feels to me like I’m in a bubble of sound.
My only complaint is that I wish it had a headphone amp built in, but I knew it didn’t going in.

Great video Randy! I purchased one of these about 11 years go when they were branded the MiniWatt N3 and was almost twice the price. Great introduction to tubes with a wonderful sound, it is unfortunate that it developed a transformer hum after about 5 years of light use.

Try getting some mill standard ACL tubes of from Amazon 15 dollars for a tested matched pair sound is still warm but tighter with a faster response. New Chinese tubs slight background hum. US tubes in my ears are dead silent.

Got this amp and pair of Klipsch RB 51 II as a grad school graduation gift from a friend. My family has had as much fun listening to this setup as anything in my house. Fills the room, easy to use, steady as a rock. It’s a little big for me to call it a desktop amp, but I guess it depends on the size of the desk.

I recently received the Tube Cube 7, it's really impressive right out the box. But sounded smoother after putting Blue Tac on the feet for isolation. I'm waiting for the arrival of the Tungsol TS-12AX7 and TS-EL84 tubes. I also have the Emotiva PT-100 and would like to use it's remote and volume control for the Tube Cube 7. Mini Watt, from Hong Kong, brought out the S1 in 2009 (it had smaller trannies and two tubes before the EL84s) , in 2010 the brought out the N3 which appears to be identical to the Tube Cube. They appear to no longer sell the N3 but possibly still make it for someone else.

    • @Audioloon
      @Audioloon 2 роки тому +1

Ya, I recall having bought the N3 and it was my first tube amp. At the time I was inpatient with tube rolling and did not have efficient enough speakers so I got rid of it. Big mistake to have parted with the N3 and I do recall I greatly preferred the N3 over the Cronus Magnum which was my second tube integrated.

It was a Macintosh tube amp powering a set of magnaplanar speakers that first made my toes curl and the hair on the back of my neck stand up. It made me realise that a system of components made by good engineers and assembled by a good installer could produce something very like magic. However, I’m pretty sure that the music room I was in had gear that was worth more than the price of my apartment. But it demonstrated that it wasn’t just about anything you could throw together. Good components made the experience so much better, if you could afford the buy in.

i have an APPJ that looks very simular. I bought it to drive a Koss ESP9 electrostatic headphone because the headphones require a single connection for left and right grounds. The amp also works well driving a pair of large Advent Speakers. the APPJ appears to have a 6 Volt heater circuit making the tube choice a bit different from the Cube 7.

The very first tube amp was built in 1906. Some companies like Luxman who go back to 1925 have serious tube roots. Their transistor amps from the decade after they went solid state many thought had a sweet tube like sound, maybe having something to do with their very long history of making tube amps. The Sanken transistors they used didn't hurt either.Tube kits where you had to build it yourself were popular in the 1940s to 1960s. Back in the day of the cathode ray, people sometimes built their own TV sets, radios and audio amplifiers. Before television, an older guy once told me that most people sat out on their steps and talked with their neighbors and passerbys each evening. Television drove people indoors and reduced social interaction by about a thousand percent. Did stereo and its panoramic spread take that further, and instead of going to the symphony, people stayed home and played symphony records?
I bought a Citation II amplifier kit which someone had sitting around for years unbuilt NOS. If there are any people reading this who are well into their 70's you can probably remember sitting on the floor with dad and helping him assemble his new tube stereo amplifier. They say there was a certain satisfaction in listening to something you built yourself. Anyone lucky enough to find good tube equipment at a thrift store or flea market, your Dynaco or Heathkit find might have been built in someone living room instead of a factory. The most popular and common tube found in amplifiers is the 12ax7 input tube. The Siemens Gold Pin with gold plated pins is a real sought after collectors find. They had tone controls more in those days. People couldn't imagine not being able to tailor theor sound. The equipment back then sounded like it was designed with accuracy more in mind than flashiness. Accuracy was THE definition of high fidelity. If you walked into an average audio store in 1962 and into an average audio store now; would you be amazed at where sound quality went; or not?

Actually you can readily find tube amps that are moderate to high powered, from several tens of watts to several hundreds of watts. A catch with tube amps is cost to quality ratio. Another aspect are different outputs. Is it OTL or transformer output? Quality OTL amps will thrive with acoustic music. Transformer output amps will handle punchier bassier music better than OTL. In both cases get the best quality amp you can afford.

I would agree Solomon as I had a pair of BA A60 several years that I ran with a Jolida SJ 502a. Granted it more more power than the Tube Cube 7 (60 watts per channel in a Push - Pull configuration with two 6550 tubes per channel). Anyway had to sell that system many years back and now I'm living in small apartment so I was thinking about getting the Tube Cube 7 and upgrading the Power Tubes as still have a collection 12AX7 that I used with the Jolida. Would like to find a BA A40 in good shape as I believe the Tube Cube 7 and the A40 would make a nice pair for a desktop system.

An EL84 tube run single ended at it's designed anode voltage outputs 5 watts of power. This amplifier outputs 3.5 watts per tube, so the anode voltage of this amp must be 30% less than an EL84 is capable of handling. I'd say this Tube Cube probably uses a SMPS (switch mode power supply) that can only reliably supply about 70% of the required voltage, and not a standard heavy and relatively expensive linear power transformer.

Tube Cube 7 probably a great little Amplifier with that EL-84 magic going on. 😎👍. Paired with the right high sensitivity Speaker 🔈 playing music on sensible levels. I need a more powerful amplifier. Can the cheap audio man do a video of the Dynavox TPR-3 tube preamp combined with two sabaj A200 in bridge mode or the
Dynavox VR-70-II or other tube Amplifier with 2*40-60w. There should be some china Audio Amplifiers in the 1000-1200 $ region with 2x30-40 watts of power with EL34 Tubes. I Tried the Dynavox TPR-3 tube preamp and it sounded very good combined with Rotel 960BX driving my Tannoy system-800. but I had to send it back because of 5G and Wi-Fi interference issues. Tube amplifiers are more sensitive to R.F. interference compared to solid state amplifiers. I used the provided tube protection steal cage hoping it will create a faraday cage around the tubes but it didn’t work.

I think Tube amps would benefit from a drive knob. It's not planned for in the circuitry because people would likely be turned off by the possibility of over-distorting, which I get. You can instead opt for a preamp, but most have mono inputs, and also rarely actually push the limit of the tubes involved. As the original tube based preamps and channels strips weren't meant to actually distort they too don't really add as much as I'd like. It's a shame because the circuitry need not be that complicated or expensive (relatively) yet it's quite often gatekept, much like with the 'neve sound'. To be honest I seriously question how high end tube amps justify their price, especially when op-amps can and do produce great and various pedigrees of gain. Think i'm going to opt for a couple Presonus tube pres, and then just stack them and split the signal from my dac. Otherwise perhaps find some nice (and budget) 1073 preamps that tends to softclip when driven.

The fact of it is cheap is not excuse to be defective, it is simple rule of good faith in commerce. We have become accustomed to accepting that products manufactured in China for globalization and from the hand of their accomplices, the importers, may or may not be defective for the simple fact that they are cheap.

I really enjoyed thus informative and fun review.
    Question for you.
I have never owned a tube amp but I am interested in possibly purchasing one & switch it back and forth with my Parasound Halo a50+ (suround sound) digital amplifier. This amp is a Class A/B design.
(Nearly 300 watts into 4 Ohm speakers)
    A Boyuurange Reisong A-20
    was recommended to me.
They sell them new on Amazon.
My question is, can this 6 watt per channel tube amp drive my Totem Accoustic Tribe Floorstander Speakers?
Here are some important specs on my speakers.
    Sensitivity: 89 dB
    Recommended Power: 50-200 watts.
    Frequency Response:
    30 Hz-30 kHz
Note, I don't listen to music loud. I'd say about 50 dB is about my limit.
I enjoy mostly accoustic music with primarily female vocals. I grew up in the '70's & listened to a lot of music on FM radio..classic rock.
But I liked the music that was coming out of California....the singer/songwriters such as Steeley Dan, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell,Bonnie Raitt,The Doobie Brothers, etc.
I also like chamber music abd other light classical genres.
I appreciate any info you can provide.
My price range is no more than $800.
    Thanks Very Much,
    David
