I'm a strong believer in quality over quantity. You read some great books in the third quarter, and I'm especially keen to read The Devils. Here's to a great fourth quarter of reading for you, Petrik!
I have to admit I’m a bit jealous of yourself and Mike for being able to read The Devils! It sounds awesome, I can’t wait to see what Abercrombie does with those crazy characters. I just want to say thanks for the book recommendations, between you, Mike, Phillip,& The Gwynne bros, I enjoy a vast majority of the books that you guys like. I’m reading The Poppy War at the moment ( I’ve had it for years and I’m just getting to it ) and The Dragonbone Chair and The Grace of Kings are on deck. I can’t wait for The Devils, Of Empires and Dust…………………one day hopefully Winds of Winter and The Doors of Stone will come out……….maybe
Quality over quantity is always best! I’m glad you read some good book in Q3. My favorite books for the third quarter were: - A Pale View of Hills by Kazuo Ishiguro - Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King - Bel Canto by Ann Patchett - Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson Happy Q4 reading! 📚
Quality over quantity, always!! 🙌 I'm so happy for you that you've finally found a new 5-star fantasy read, Abercrombie never disappoints! I'm really looking forward to The Devils 🤓
Great video! So happy to see "Sistah Samurai" by Tatiana Obey. I found 2 favourites this quater : "The Cautious Traveller's Guide to the Wastelands" by Sarah Brooks and "Toward Eternity" by Anton Hur I also found some almost favorites: "Foul Days" Genoveva Dimova "Murder at Spindle Manor" - Morgan Stang "The West Passage" - Jared Pechaček
Ive grown to really love your channel, Petrik. I especially live the update videos because I need them - and I love bookshelf tours! Can you do a bookshelf tour soon? Or maybe at the end of the year? They seem to do well on UA-cam. Anyways, love the haircut!
@@themangaculture thank you so much! I did a bookshelf tour last year I think? I will do another but not now. Preferably after I have more bookshelves to store my books. 😂
So, so excited to read The Devils. Joe Abercrombie is my favourite fantasy author of all time and everything I've ever read from him has been a solid 10/10. Thank you for bringing up The Narrow Road Between Desires though. I've read most of the novels and novellas by Patrick Rothuss, but hadn't actually heard of that one until now, so that's going straight to the top of my reading list. 😊
Love your update! Thanks for sharing it with us. My favorite books of the third quarter were Ruin, by John Gwynne, and Boy’s Life, by Robert McCammon. Both 5-star books for me!
Love to see Sistah Samurai getting some love here! And I had somehow missed that it's becoming a series, so you just made my day with this update!! Also can't wait to get to The Devils, May can't come soon enough 🤩🤩 I think my 5 favourites of Q3 were Asunder by Kerstin Hall, The Sundering Hours by Jacquelyn Hagen, Hell of a Witch by Rachel Aaron, Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors and Thank You for Listening by Julia Whelan!
I'm way behind on book series. Currently finishing the Powder mage trilogy, Gentleman Bastards trilogy and books 3 and 4 of stormlight, just in time for Wind and Truth. What a year 🎉
I really liked Sistah Samurai. And I am not even a big anime/manga fan. I read quite a lot of good books this year but off the top of my head I would guess that The Green Bone Saga will end up at the top this year. Even against the Stormlight Archive. I am about a third through Jade Legacy. I expected a great read with this series, but this is still exceeding my expectations by far.
Of those mentioned I have only read Pillars of the Earth and I agree, it's excellent. My best five this year so far: 5. Going Postal by Sir Terry Pratchett 4. Parable of the Talents by Octavia E. Butler 3. Alice Isn't Dead by Joseph Fink 2. Krabat by Otfried Preußler 1. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
@@PetrikLeo totally agree and i might add the world building too is just amazing and awesome. You could actually imagine being there when i read Williams for the first time (the dragonbone chair). I've since become a collector of all his books.
Awesome stuff, Petrik!! I think you read more books than most people, so there's no shame in that! Have you heard of / read Blackwater by Michael McDowell? I just recently finished it, and I was thinking "This feels like a Petrik 5 star book" haha.
Luckily, I'm not jealous because I've only read one Abrecombie book so far! The Devil will be out for a while before I actually get to it (reading his other stuff 1st of course), but I love having those gems in my TBR that I know are going to be bangers!
Best books i've read this year hmm ... 1.The Gathering Storm by Sanderson 2.Empire of the Damned by Kristoff 3.A Time Of Courage by Gwynne 4.Empire of the Vampire by Kirstoff 5.Wrath by Gwynne
@@PetrikLeo Its the best for me.The story, the characters and the magic system is unmatched goes far beyond book 5 and 11 ! For me EOTD > Words of Radiance :D
@@PetrikLeoNice. Ive only read the prologue of book 1 and it was enough to tell me I gotta read that series. I'll look forward to your review when you get around to it
Hey, it's not a ton of books in 3 months but you did definitely read some bangers. Joe Abercrombie, Tad Williams, Ken Follet . . . those aren't authors you take lightly. The Booktube obsession with quantity's overrated, and I say this as someone who reads like 15 books a month mainly because I don't really have the ability to do much with my free time.
That's true! Thank you so much for the understanding and kind words! To think I used to be able to read 10-15 books per month. Those days are long gone :)
Hey, that only shows that you are human Petrik, but yeah, quality trumps quantity every time! 😄 My own Q3 Top 5 Favorites; 1) «The Green Angel Tower» (Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, #3) by Tad Williams (Epic Fantasy, a key influence for George R. R. Martin's « A Song of Ice and Fire») 2) Split: «Lustrum» by Robert Harris (Historical Fiction, book #2 in the Cicero Trilogy about the Eponymous Roman Statesman) & «The Lantern Bearers» by Rosemary Sutcliff (Historical Fiction Novella set during the Roman withdrawal from Britain and the Anglo Saxon invasions) 3) «The Warrior Prophet» (The Prince of Nothing #2) by R. Scott Bakker (Grimdark/Dark Epic Fantasy inspired by the Crusades, Silmarillion & Dune) 4) Splitt: «Sword in the Storm» (Rigante #1) by David Gemmell (Heroic Fantasy/S&S inspired by Celtic Britain and the Roman Invasions of Julius Ceasar) & «The Thousandfold Thought» (The Prince of Nothing #3) by R. Scott Bakker (Grimdark/Dark Epic Fantasy inspired by the Crusades, Silmarillion & Dune) 5) «Tiamat's Wrath» (The Expanse, #8) by James S.A. Corey (Space opera)
World without End is well worth the read, as is the latest Kingsbridge novel: The armour of Light. The other two Kingsbridge novels- In the morning and the evening (series prequel) and A column of Fire are less good. A column of fire is still very good, just not as good. I find the prequel the weakest out of all of them- it can be rapey at times
I plan to read them all! And noted about the prequel novel. It won't be soon until I get to them. I think I'll read one book in Kingsbridge per year. :)
The Doors of Stone will never come out. He told us almost 10 years ago that he was done and revising / editing. I have more confidence in GRRM finishing Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.
My copy of Dragonbone Chair is in the mail. Can't wait for it. I finally got my Broken Binding invite intime for Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn. I had been lamenting not being able to find a good looking edition of this series so it was your art direction that was directly responsible for me joining Broken Binding.
Oh really? That's so wonderful. Thank you so much for the kind words! I hope you'll love Memory Sorrow and Thorn TBB edition. I worked really hard on those. 😅
World Without End is the only other Kingsbridge novel I have read so far and while I still think that it was a really good book it unfortunately wasn't even close to Pillars for me. Ken Follett clearly applied the same "formula" again and while it worked well, it was very similar to Pillars and simply not as good IMO. However, I know that there are definitely readers that consider WWE at least on par with POTE, so I'm looking forward to what you will have to say once you get around to reading WWE. I also think that it would have been better to wait longer (at least several months) after finishing POTE before jumping into WWE. I'm reading Jade War right now and I agree with your opinion: While I already adored Jade City, Jade War is even better and feels grander than the previous installment.
I heard pretty much the same thing. I plan to read only one book in the Kingsbridge series every year so I have a bigger chance of enjoying them! :p Glad to hear you're enjoying Green Bone Saga. It's truly a terrific trilogy, IMO!
