- We had a chance to ride with our friend who has a brand new 2017 Yamaha Sidewinder 4 stroke turbo. We found some really deep snow in Revelstoke, BC and were able to put the 2 strokes head to head against the 4 stroke. In deep snow climbs the Sidewinder was an absolute beast and the extra power was very apparent. It blew my 850 165" and my brother's 800 174" out of the water. It might have a big of a disadvantage in the tight trees being heavier and a little less nimble. Looking forward to future comparisons and getting some seat time on the 4 stroke.

I've had a Sidewinder 280 hp for 3 seasons, rarely got stuck but also chose wisely where I'd put the sled. It is in fact a really balanced and great machine to drive, a different challenge to lets say a Khaos or Summit. It's not so much about which machine is better, I have just as much fun on a powerful 4-stroke as a 2-stroke. Is it heavy? To me it doesn't feel heavy if you let the horsepower work, if you get stuck you need strong friends with a lot of patience ;)
A stock Sidewinder is not strong enough imho to compete with the best 2-strokes out there, you need 250+ hp to really compensate and have fun, just my 2 cents.

Love to watch this video. I would imagine elevation had something to do with things as well but thats how it goes.
Even with lightweight sleds the sweetspot for power is nearer 300 than 200hp. But, how to get 250hp from a 2-stroke twin? You sure need a turbo, and then weight already increase. Then, a 2-stroke is letting the charge air escape through the exhaust, 10% gain and thats it. My idea for a compromise is to experiment with top exhaust valves on a 2-stroke turbo, like in a 2-stroke diesel, the technology is well known, just need to figure out how much weight gain there will be when using an electric valve mechanism (no cam or valve gear).
OR the best, get a 4stroke Yamaha and call it the day, it works and its already here, plus its so reliable that you probably want it even if there was a 2-stroke equivalent.

They may not be practical but I think people get them because they’re just different. Personally think it would be fun to have one.

I love mine! I’m not a tree rider I like stuff like they ride here and alpine and no 2 stroke turbo or not can keep up. Sled are totally under rated imo

800 174 will outclimb a stock sidewinder with the same rider. I've tested this many times. Put an mcx 250 kit on it and it's a different story. In my video called turbo snowmobiles in alaska starts off with a drag race in deep snow between a 850 174 turbo vs 162 sidewinder with 250 kit and a 310hp impulse turbo nytro. In that race there was a big difference in rider weight.

I own a sidewinder 162 and ride entirely with two strokes. 3 850 165s (no, not 175s I know) and none of them have a prayer of going up the straight line pulls I can without zig zagging. I'll add that I like them all though and none are bad sleds. All your preference these days
Yeah ok would love to see that two strokes compared to four is a joke four strokes will fly in powder and anything you will just shoot up a hill if you give is some gas a two stroke is that slow going up hills it’s garbage
@@chakstak3684 well it was a powder climb with the same 270 lb rider who happened to own the sidewinder. Of course the four stroke turbo will be faster than an na two stoke but in deep powder a two stroke turbo will have much better floatation than the trenching four stroke and be faster in a drag race. 4 strokes really shine In long flat pulls but when it gets technical they start to have trouble. Obviously a really good strong rider can get it done in the trees on a four stroke turbo but it take significantly more effort and if you think it's easier and more capable than a two stroke you're a 🤡
