Using 3D Printing to Build a Custom Exhaust
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 чер 2021
- In today's episode, we're building a custom exhaust for an FK8 Honda Civic Type R. I'm 3D Printing a bunch of fabrication different steps along the way. This was a lot of welding and a TON of work haha... by far the craziest exhaust I've ever built. I hope you guys enjoy today's video!

LOVE the idea of 3D printing guides for all the difficult (and easy!) cuts
Hey thanks! Glad you liked it👍
That's beautiful; that's not just exhaust, it's art.
Hey thank you, that means a lot!
The attention to detail and precision are inspiring. great work!
I love you used 3d printing!
Having such little fabrication experience, 3D printing has really helped me bridge that gap into making some really nice (to me, at least) parts and projects
just came across this. have gotten into welding the past year but have 3D printed (even professionally) since 2015. this is a great video.
Hey thank you! A ton of work but the results were worth it. The 3d printed parts helped out a ton
still sounds like a 1990s honda lol
incredible fab work and video production though
🤣🤣 not having an exhaust manifold makes it so tough to sound nice. Customer was happy though and I was really, really happy with the fab work with Nate! Thank you
Piece of art man👍👍👍
Hey thank you! I was super proud of it
The engineering, fab work, and welding on this project is amazing and super inspiring, very well done. When are you gonna start making videos again?
Thanks Ben! Ive been recording bits and pieces for several episodes the last couple of weeks. I had to take a bunch of time away for some family medical things, then I injured myself working 🙄
Bro ain't building a Civic hes building a whole spaceship
Tried to 🤣🤣
Glad to see another video man! The quality of your work and content is on 🔥 💯
Hey thanks so much, glad you liked it!!
Excellent commentary. Really enjoyed the content and learned a few things from you as well. Thanks!
Hey thanks! I'm glad you liked it 👍
Adapting 3d prints to make accurate cuts is fab 💯🔥
Hey thanks! It's a little more time consuming but it makes for really nice results 👍
A before and after comparison would have helped imo
Awesome design and fab work.
Hey thanks! The car had been purchased new, and the owner was waiting to get PPF installed when we built the exhaust. I didn't want to be the one to put a rock chip in it getting before clips LOL
That's badass!
😎👍👍
Hey thanks! 👍
Sounds good! I was expecting a high-pitched raspy Honda sound but it’s really mellow. Nice!
The owner was really stoked! It's hard to make these sound good 👍
I really enjoy the mix of 3d printing and fab work, great job, cant wait to see what you got going next.
Hey thank you, I'm glad you liked it 👍
super badass work!!!
Hey thanks! 🤘 lot of time went into this one and the owner loved it
Love that sound
Looks sweet I love the meticulous methodology with 3D printing to get it perfect. ends up with a quality product 👊
Thanks Tim! 3D printing really helps me bridge a skill gap for trying to fabricate by hand. I never spent the years learning those skills but I can pretty reasonably turn things out in CAD to help
Love the voice over narration. Almost as much as the kick ass fab work.
Hey thank you! Im glad you liked it 👍
Killer design and fab work. Would love to see more on the CAD/design side. 🤙
Hey thank you! I've been trying to balance engineering nerdiness with still making things entertaining for folks. I do post more details on my IG usually
Hi, it was interesting to watch and listen to your interesting useful and overview video. Thank you for making a masterpiece🔥👀✍🔔
That's really kind of you, thank you! 👍
Oh man after so many days, you remembered your account password 😂
right in the feels, I'm trying haha
I love the g i m b a l work!
Loving the quality of the videos man, anywhere I could follow you ? I would love to see the behind the scenes or behind the lens
Thank you! I post a lot of additional stuff on Instagram @GrindhousePE as well
Seems like it doesn’t drone much but it probably has the stock down pipe. I think on a catless downpipe it would drone unless a Helmholtz design was incorporated. This would be sicker if it was full titanium.
There's one pocket off throttle around 3k rpm that gets drone, the OEM exhaust did have a helmholtz in it specifically targeting this. Would agree probably need to add something with an aftermarket downpipe. Thanks for checking out my video!
Sound wise, I‘m missing a few sharper raspy notes on the high end, but the construction looks really top notch!
Hey thank you! Im hoping to bring that out in the future when we build a downpipe for it 👍👍
Nice work! I’m trying to find some inspiration for my exhaust. I’m going to j32 6speed swap my 5th gen Honda prelude and need a great sounding exhaust. Nothing ricey but sounds mean
That sounds like a pretty awesome swap, I didn't know people were using them. I think a good set of headers will make a big difference on sound for a j32. Im glad you liked it 👍
Where are you guys located i have a greddy ddr i want to chop up and do something crazy with
Hope you make a video on paparika again!
We're trying to figure out a plan for paprika! Not sure whether it'll turn into a full build or what but she's survived another season of rallycross
@@GrindhousePerformance interesting! My mum owns a 2008 red SX4 and i was gladly surprised by what you and your wife were doing with it.
Still working on the 280?
I haven't been able to much! I had to take some personal time and I've been playing catch up since
Totally get that! Excited to see its return to the channel! Hope all is well otherwise.
Sounds like a vacuum. Lot of work and money, for a overpowered Dyson
MMMkay young man, I'm gonna need you to stop messing around with Hondas and finish your "Z". Are we clear?
LOL John damn, laying down the law 🤣. I've really gotta pedal down if I want to drive it this year. Everything's been backordered like crazy and I keep seeing stuff I want to redo with how poorly I did a lot of things over the years. There's also a ton of small projects on it that really aren't video worthy that ive been putting off.. need more hours in the day!
@@GrindhousePerformance I'm just now embarking on a pretty major re-do of my exhaust. It's just too damn low and scrapes too much. The only way I can conjure to get more room is with tri-"Y" headers and a single oval 4.5" tube in the middle section rather than two 3". Fortunately the back section up to the front of the diff is fine....but most of the rest needs to be re-imagined. I hate the thought of it...doing the headers was brain damage the first time....but it's not going to fix itself. I already made a new tranny cross-member with much larger exhaust cut-outs. Ah well, at least it'll keep me off the streets....
Oh dang, that doesn't sound good for my future then either! Have you seen shawn basset's? He ran at pikes peak last year in an all carbon LS 240z. "Attacking the clock racing" His exhaust routes as fender exits, but the fender area is large enough he's able to tuck mufflers up front. I can't remember if NASA has rules on exhaust exiting behind the driver, but it's a thought I had if it scrapes too much
Aye this probably sounds fire. But I swear this is the worst sounding car in videos. It never does it justice.
I was so disappointed when I came home and pulled the video! It sounds so much better than the mic picked up on. I totally agree, after watching other type r videos none of them sound good on video.. so weird
