      +MyHarto I just replied to Kati on your video - so why not to you on hers. THANK YOU so much for these two videos. I really needed them, and I really needed to know about Kati's channel. Why does it never occur to us to look on youtube for what we need? Thank you Hannah for showing me. Now finding a resource for my diagnosis is on my to-done list for the day!

      Another great mood booster, other than watching this vid normally, would be to watch the first 8 seconds at half speed and then the last 5 seconds. If you have time, just watch the whole video at half speed

    I watched one of Hannah's videos YEARS ago where she talked about making a "to done" list and it's stuck with me ever since. I find that even just mentally saying to yourself, "Yeah but thing of all the things you did do today. Like hey, you're still breathing at least, good job," when you're freaking out about your to do list can be super helpful.

    When I journal, I JOURNAL. I can go months writing every single day. But once I miss a day I can go years without writing a word. Glad to report I recently started back at school and haven't missed a day of journaling yet. I just think it's important to document my time here.

    • @nimstockwell2293

      +izzy120391 I do this ALL the time. I bought a calendar, just to keep my life tidy, not to document feelings... but i would write what i did so that i could remember and so i could see all i accomplished in a day. But if I miss even one day I fall completely out of the habit. I used my last callander January and February and i've barely touched it since.

    • @thewinterizzy
      @thewinterizzy 9 років тому +2

      Emily Stockwell it is the WORST. Starting up again is the hardest... Use today to whip that calendar back out and start writing again! Start a new streak! You can do it! Gold star!

      +izzy120391 but how do you do it? Like how do you start it could you pretend to write one rn just the beginning as an example if you don't mind Ofc but if you do I understand

    • @thewinterizzy
      @thewinterizzy 9 років тому +2

      manal m I just write what happened that day. Don't try to "catch up" with however long you've missed. Just write. Sometimes, I find it helpful to set a five minute timer. The goal is to not stop writing until it beeps. Write "blah blah" if you have to. Just write! :)

    I wanna put this out there: i hadn't herd of thought dropping before this vid, but its actually something Ive been doing for a while. I use the notes app on my phone... I titled (actually i have multiple note things...) it "Things I don't say on Fb" or "shower stories" etc.. i love this idea and it does really help. If i start feeling over whelmed with thoughts, i write them down cause they seem cool, and then after i actually feel quite a lot better... Well just wanted to say that and now it has been said. :)

    Journaling is easy when you have something to write about. In June 2012 I started one for every time I (regretfully) self harmed. Every single time I had to write my thoughts and feelings down so I - initially - could look back and be like "woah I don't feel like that anymore". Granted it has taken me 3 years to get to that point and it is still really hard to read, I need to be careful because it can trigger me back into that head space, but it's also funny to me how such trivial things really get to you when your mind is just so toxic with negative thoughts.
    It also did include happy thoughts but they were few and far between.

    • @princessgold1997
      @princessgold1997 9 років тому +1

      +Teela Louise on another note, I no longer need to write things down in that journal things so I have conversations with myself about my head space. Not in a murmuring under your breath way but literally talking in my head as if I was talking to another person (my god it sounds so sad) but it's so easy especially when you feel you have no one you can trust. It makes you clear your head and more often than not I just forget about what I was thinking about when I wake up the next day bc you have dealt with it. Rationalize your thoughts and move on.

    I've found it super helpful to try to realize when I'm having one of those "negative thought spirals" of those common negative thoughts I have about myself to literally think of a giant stop sign in my head and say "STOP!" and then re-read or call to mind those positive talk backs to remind myself that the negative thoughts aren't true. In the past I've even written some of those positive things on a poster and stuck it to my bathroom mirror or any place I'll see it often. Hope this helps someone! You will make it through today--you've already made it through 100% of your days so far!

    A gratitude journal can be awesome too. If you take a few minutes everyday to write down at least three things your grateful for, after awhile you'll start to retrain the neural pathways in your brain to look for the positive instead of the negative. I think it takes around 27 days to really become a habit, and I haven't been consistent enough with it yet, but it can make you feel instantly more positive.

    This makes me so happy! This is also my first youtube comment ever. I've been watching MDK from the beginning and have loved the progression to self love and progressive personal action. I've struggled with depression my whole life and made a deal with myself on my last birthday (29), to become the healthiest me by 30. The first step is unraveling the workings of my brain, and subscribing to your channel is going to help so much. I journal very tangentially, but find it helps me so much. Having a weekly prompt will aid so much in my journey. Thank you both!

    Yes to this! I combine longer diary journaling, idea journaling, to do lists all in one place, been doing that for a few years now, and this year started using a adapted version of the bullet journal system. And it really helps! I even make work/study lists with points to do, chapters to write, etc, on paper, so I can cross them out - there is almost nothing as satisfying as looking back at pages of to-do things that are all crossed out.

    Even though this video is 2 years old, today couldn't have been a more fitting time for me to have come across it. I lost my job in July, am a single mom & have been struggling emotionally as well as financially, especially now with Christmas coming. I have 2 journals that I got with a gift card from last Christmas, but haven't written a single word in either of them because I never feel like my thoughts are "journal worthy" (which I realize is ironically, probably something I should actually address in a journal). So thank you for making this video!

    Oddly enough I got this tip from a fiction writing class. When I took this class, I was going through stuff. My emotions were just too big. I didn't really know what to do with them or even how I was "supposed" to feel. So I gave them to someone else. I wrote down every thing I was going through and feeling but as if it was happening to someone else. It was a tip we were given in the class for finding inspiration. But it really helped me sort through what I was going through. Also it allowed me to feel/discuss the feelings I really felt without guilt or whatever. I only did it for a few months. Mostly because eventually I reached a place where I could acknowledge my experiences and emotions and be okay with it.

    I love the thought dropping idea. I really struggle with CBT worksheets, because my anxiety is unpredictable because it happens in social situations. For example, if I'm walking down the street and someone asks for the time I suddenly get really anxious and the anxiety takes over before I get a chance to deal with those thoughts. I think having a little journal on me at the time little things like that happen will help. That way I can jot down the thoughts, put them away, and deal with them later on - obviously I'll write them when I'm away from that person or others. It's really hard to do cbt worksheets when your anxiety happens suddenly and you forget the thoughts you have at the time, and they are so not convenient to carry around. If I'm in a group or out in public I think an easy way to do it would be to just go to the bathroom and write the thoughts down in the little journal and then go back to the social situation. :) This has been so helpful I can't wait to tell my therapist.

    I use the note pad on my phone to write down thoughts, which works quick if I don't have paper handy. later on I've taken u copying my thoughts from my phone into a notebook, and while I did so I told myself why everything I was feeling was okay and that I wasn't as much of a failure as past-me thought. It was really helpful.

    Great information from two great ladies.
    I have always been a journal keeper but have found in the past few years it's hard to keep up with a physical journal due to adhd, anxiety, being and adult, and a parent!
    Knowing how important it is to keep track of my thoughts in a tangible way has led me to find some 'journaling hacks'.
    1.The app Google Keep is AMAZING for on the go 'Thought dropping'! It syncs across all your devices linked to a google account automatically, tada no more lost notes-to-self!
    2. Sometime I'll use a voice recorder to get out the thoughts that are moving too fast to write down. Then I go back, listen to the recording and write down the most poignant thoughts.
    3. Last one, write in a journal like a maniac, stream of consciousness, read back through my writing out loud and record what is worth repeating. Then listen to the recording to understand what I wrote about more consciously.

    I love these ideas! Personally I have always preferred the letter form of journaling. As a 9 year old, I didn't have a lot of peers I was close to, so I sort of created one. I named each of my journals from then on and would use the ideas I got in my journals as story starters for my short stories. I've been writing to Melody for many years. My journals are where I keep my poems, to do lists, reading challenges I'm doing and much more. My journals have always been my personal mobile scrapbooks. I print off photos, save tickets from plays and concerts I attend, various mementos from concerts I've sang in, Disney art, and more. In high school, I wrote to Celine Dion, letting her know how much her music means to me. Her Toronto office sent back a letter with perfume samples and other goodies. I still have the photo postcard she sent me. The only other separate journal I keep is my recovery one. But otherwise Melody is the space for everything else other than my original music. I also sketch in my journals, although my sketches aren't great. They look like child's play compared to my super talented art major sister's masterpieces. I'll have to upload some photos on your website so people can see how I decorate them. Over the years, I have learned to never be without a means to write and/or create music. Those two things are how I process literally everything in life.So I often stick Melody with me in my wheelchair.

    I keep a journal for my creative stuff, tons of lists of things (books I want to buy, etc), and my journal-journal. My therapist recommended making a "mood scale" (1-10), which I note in the front of every new journal, to help stay on track.
    At the beginning of each entry, next to the date, I rank my overall mood for that day. Then if I got upset or angry during the day, I'll also note those feelings in more detail while I'm writing. Knowing where I'm at, overall, on a day-to-day basis has been a great way to see if I'm sliding back into bad habits or depression! Then I can decide what might be contributing to these things and if I can do anything to change it.

    I just started doing some journaling....I have done bullet journaling for about a year now and that helps me to stay on track and make lists of what i need to do and see what i have accomplished. I dont always feels like journaling about my feelings or anything serious so I took some prompts from Wreck This Journal and did those. I actually will be buying a wreck this journal soon as they have lots of wacky fun creative ways to journal and allows me to do something fun, creative, and for myself.

    This helped me a lot! Thank you! My therapist talked a lot about talking back to those negative thoughts and you took it a step further on how to do that.☺️❤️

    awe this related to me a lot. Especially with the self hate stuff. I find myself always thinking i'm not doing enough, but i have to stop and realize that i'm only doing my best, that is all that should matter. Gunna try journaling!

    So amazing you got to do this collab! Such a great topic too. I'm the same in the sense I have different journals for different things which helps! I have a recovery/art journal which is basically anything mental health related where I throw everything, then I have a gratitude journal which is just an on going list of things I'm grateful for, a journal which is just a kind of diary where I write about life stuff sometimes, a quote journal and then a bunch of other notebooks for random things! #journaljunkie 😉

    After seeing this, I'm going to get myself a little notebook for my desk at work, because the times when I'm working hard seem to be the times that my brain wanders the most. Hopefully that will help me to actually remember my thoughts after the fact, and to be able to analyse everything rationally afterwards. Thanks for the tip, guys!
