  • We love swimming in our Intex pool setup and don't want to stop just because its cold outside. And that little chinese made insta-hot tankless heater isn't up for the task I though it coud do. So Sassy got us a Raypak above ground pool heater that can use natural gas (our installation) and even propane with no modifications. I show you how installing a Raypak gas heater on an Intex above ground pool is easy and can actually be fun.
Our Intex pool now has a Intex sand filter and pump rated at 2800 GPH with a flow rate and pressure just right for this heater. But I onlly have a 3/8" BBQ grill gas line. Do you think it will work? Lets try it out!

I’m thinking to doing this, I have the exact same pool pump and I was just worried about how to get the heater plumbed in, so really glad to see this, feeling much more confident to try this myself. How’s it held up over the years? Is that hose clamp set up still working for you?

The fitting to reduce to the hose would be greatly appreciated i found ones that will thread on at home depot and grabbed an intex gasket pack on amazon but the size that goes on the cut off end to and from the pool would be greater appreciated if this doesn't work for me

How did you manage to get your gas Raypak heater in CA? I'm also in CA and still trying to buy one, maybe drive to Oxnard? 40 miles from the Valley where I'm at.

I just got one and will run it out of the same outlet but I hear mix reviews about making sure to shut the heater of sooner then the pump I have mine on a timer so both will shut of at the same time

Are you still on 36’ length of the hose 3/8 inch flex pipe ? Is it working fine ? Enough natural gas to the heater..?

What is the model of the Intex pump + sand filter you have hooked up? I recently plumbed in a 2005 Raypak 130A NG heater with 3/4" flex hose fed from 1-3/4" line from the meter. I bought a used 1hp Hayward Super Pump because the min recommended flow for the heater is 20gpm. I also have an Intex SF90110T which is rated max 17gpm. I think it's the same set as you have hooked up.

Its a 2800 GPH pump so I'm not sure

Where is your sediment trap on the pool heater??

I know you wanna take down the Tankless water heater but just hear me out. You have a Sand Filter which requires backwashing and Rinsing then you have to refill the pool. Well now you can just plug the garden hose into the Tankless water heater and use it to add hot water after every Backwash/Rinse, then you'll not only be adding warmth while running the filter but when you add new water, you'll just have to move the gas line back and forth between heaters.

I noticed you did not add check valve. Can you please tell me why? I have the same intex system and heater. Just propane. Will 3/8 work for propane?

Length of hose and BTU required determins diameter.

Seems a little risky trusting that flex gas line just laying around. Will it auto shut off if ruptured, or continue to leak gas?

    • @3DaysAway

Yes, if loss of water or gas flow it has a safety feature.

Is the 3/8 gas line still working for you. I have a 1/2 inch by the pool but about 25 feet from my 1 1/4 line. Hoping its enough.

You can go get a water column measuring tool. My 3/8th BBQ line is 40ft long and it still reads 10" (max is 10.5 on 156a model for natural gas). You SHOULD be good with 1/2inch. Highly recommend just testing it though. The tool is all of $30-40

Curious, when you said “I didn’t have to use a 1/2” flex line “ what was your main reason for avoiding that? Was it the price of the line? Because my thoughts would be to go big, to get the most BTUs to be delivered to your pool heater. And avoid buying a reducer. Maybe I missed something

Because he already had a 3/8 line going to the poolside for the tankless heater He just used what was already there..

Is the 1/2" connection inside the heater where you attached the steel pipe male or female?

How much did it cost to get that pipe added to your gas meter? I wonder if it has to be buried because of codes?

im waiting on delivery for a 120 gallon propane tank from a local gas company. I have a couple 20 gallon tanks sitting around. How long do you think one of these 20 gallon tanks will last for? I'm trying to see if I could start using the heater with the smaller tanks until they install the big one. Thanks in advance!

Clamping on those fittings is a mistake, should have used barbed fittings.
Clamping on anything is a no-no on in-ground, but AG pools are pretty much toys, so….
