Head of Purchasing Commission in the United States for the British government, Sir Henry Self, was appointed head of research and development and overall production for the RAF, he took the P51s that had already been acquired by the RAF and replaced their engines with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. The Allison V1710 engine struggled with high altitude performance. The addition of the Merlin engine along with North American's Laminar Flow wing design resulted in arguably the best fighter of WWII.

There was no such thing as the German “scarecrow bomb” - it was a wartime rumour among Allied airmen who would see a massive explosion in the sky and imagined it to be a type of German munition. What they were actually seeing was one of their own bombers completely disintegrated by an explosion due to a faulty bomb fuse that ignited all the bombs simultaneously inside the plane’s bomb bay.

Let us not forget that during WW II the bombing raids were not only targeting military targets but civilian population centers as well. They burned down entire cities. At the time the generals including Curtis Lemay believed the only way to end the war was to convince the axis people that it was no longer feasible to continue fighting. Both sides specifically targeted civilain populations inorder to break the peoples will to continue fighting. Ironically not one major war has been won since in todays wars of limiting civilian casualties every war has ended in a stalemate . Todays limting factor is how long a country can financially sustain a war. Thats why you see 10 and 20 year occupations with no defind winner

Rolls Royce/Packard powered Mustang to be exact. The Mustang would not have been ready or built at all without a British order made during the dark days of the Battle of Britain. What I don't like is the way this paints America the previously unwilling. Thank God for the quad power of William Stephenson, William Donovan, Winston Churchill and FDR. Without these four America would have continued to shelter NAZI spies in NYC. America would have been completely unprepared for Dec 7, 1941.

Parts were liberated from the Nazis, parts of Europe eventually were freed. Unfortunately you are correct about Eastern Europe. My husband's aunt Wilma was one of the German girls who married a Canadian soldier during the occupation of liberated Europe. She was a sweet person and one of the lucky ones to get out. Even Western Europe faced years of hardship. She lost her family in the war and thought Canada was paradise.

Strategic Bombers Campaign of RAF and USAAC from 1942 to 1945 played a major role in defeat of Luftwaffe by attention of pilots a resources, because most of it was sended to Reich defence, where bombing of major cities and factories and whole petrol/oil sector forced germans air defence to get every available pilots, planes and equipment from every theatre of war, even from Eastern front. You can consider this as a "second się front", which weakened Germany before invasion of France in Normandy in 1944.
Soviet air force wasn't capable to strategic Campaign, cause soviet factories didn't produce four engine strategic Bombers, but only Tactical two engine Bombers and low altitude fighters, and soviet air force had doctrine of close się support in operational, not strategic range.
So Allies air Campaign was a big contribution to constant loss of available Luftwaffe projection of power in every front, Eastern too.
Soviet air force wasn't capable to long, constant operational activity, cause of very weak logistical support, which was capable to rearm, refuel and repair hundreds of planes, but for short time operational. So soviet planes were active in large numbers over front in short time, like data or maybe two weeks. After that, they were grounded sometimes even for longer time, cause they were waiting for new wave of bombs, fuel, ammunition, oils, lubricants etc. Sometimes they wait quite long time, cause of lack of efficient logistical linea. Only some units, where some supplies left were active over frontline, rest was grounded. So even if soviets had ten times more planes in Eastern front than Germans, only small percentage of them was active over front, that's why soviet air force wasn't capable to break completely germans air activity over their own soviet forces. Additionally quality of soviet aviation personel and planes was interior (quantity not quality doctrine), except few good, experience units. So soviet air forces didn't try to: copy Allied strategic bombing Campaign, break completely activity of Luftwaffe in Eastern front (soviets didn't try attack on Germans airbases in large scale at late part of war), and they concentrated main effort on close się support.
Conclusion: USSR in general taked advantages and benefits of Allied strategic bombing Campaign, which one constantly drained the strength of Luftwaffe on every theatre of war to purpose of building Reich Air Defence forces. That purpose of Campaign did a lot in favor of soviet fight against Germany in Eastern front, and because of that soviets were able to move forward more quickly. None from Allied countries was capable to win alone the war quickly without cooperation against Germany.
