  • Hitler’s Ardennes offensive sought to push the Allies all the way back to the Belgian port of Antwerp, and resultantly sparked some of the wars most grueling battles-Bastonge, St. Vith and The Battle of the Bulge. The Nazi counter-offensive spanned the winter months, catching the already fatigued allied forces off guard. These were, since D-Day, the darkest hours of the war.

The Allies really missed this drive. A lot of commanders ignored reports of sounds of armor and trucks moving as "ghost units ".

I read a book on the "checkerboard" division,or the 99th infantry and what a damn story, especially when you consider that those guys were told they were seeing and hearing things when they reported German movement in their sector, turns out their was a lot of damned movement going on, but they fought like hell

The Germans should have brought out the 88mm AA guns which could counter allied air superiority and to also function as an anti-tank weapon at the same time. Where were they?

    • @dodejoker1988

@@huiyinghong3073 They brought plenty of them, they were extensively used as anti-air, indirect fire artillery and as direct fire anti-tank weaponry. Unfortunately, as with most of the German material, they still couldn't bring the numbers they would've required to succeed. Nor did they have enough of a logistics train to properly support the assault. It was an expensive gamble that had poor odds of succeeding from the start. The only reason the operation managed to do a lot of damage was because the allied units in the way of the assault were mostly units in rest and recovery. Exhausted units that were quickly strenghtened by ad-hoc nearby reinforcements. Also the weather prevented the Allies from using their main advantage. Their air superiority was grounded because of heavy fog.

@@dodejoker1988 What i meant is the Germans could have brought out more 88mm guns during the battle of the bulge specifically to counter or at least negate Allied air superiority and to protect their ground troops and also to be used as an anti-tank weapon when required.

@@dodejoker1988 Also is there a modern day equivalent to the 88mm gun? Like a weapon that can perform as an as anti-air, indirect fire artillery and as direct fire anti-tank weaponry.

@@huiyinghong3073 They could've, but you also have to remember this is during the height of the allied bombing campaigns against German cities. They needed a lot of AA to protect what little industry they had left.

His opening about Hitler planning the Arden Offensive while we were still just a beach head, seems a little off... Arden's was 6 months after D Day....

Aircraft from both sides were grounded due to the weather for several days at the start of the offensive - straight out untruths. Straffing only occurred later and was almost exclusively the Alled planes attacking the Germans.
