I won't lie, it does take time, but it doesn't have to take as long as a lot of people make it out to take. I wasted many years along the way and hopefully I am able to impress upon you to learn from my mistakes and do it the right way from the beginning. That makes the whole process much more enjoyable and a lot faster.
Thank you for your instructional videos. They have really helped me a lot. I got your BGU lessons and am really liking it. I am purposely staying on each lesson until I can play that lesson reasonably well. In the past I would bounce from one thing to another without advancing much at anything.
Well of course I don't want to leave anyone behind, but on the other hand almost any lesson has to have some assumptions as far as technique and previous knowledge. If this were a beginning lesson, I wouldn't be talking about playing solos over jam tracks. This may not be useful if you are a beginner. But if you are an intermediate player this is useful and you would be bored if I covered the basics again.
One of the best guitar instruction videos I've ever seen. Just chock full of wisdom, and even advanced players can probably glean something from this. Thank you!
Avoid backing tracks that have too much going on, especially guitar parts. Some backing tracks are like complete pieces leaving little or no room for you to play anything.
I always just assumed my lack of skill (which I’am very lacking) that made it all but impossible for me to play over tracks and I gave up ….Which more or less meant giving up on progressing because of it ….I really would get ,or still was/am getting discouraged not being able to play “in the song “ instead of “over the song” making me lose the pocket ,stumble over phrases etc etc….while watching this I wasn’t aware at first how stripped down most of these backing tracks were till near the end when the lick was one I more or less learned as my first lick. No one ever mentions this idea of a less busy backing tracks , so imo very good point /idea that I really think more Need to know..great simple comment , really !
Thanks Griff. A totally excellent tutorial.. This is definitely the BEST and possibly only currently available tutorial showing how to play 'licks' along with the backing track.
Hey Grif..... have you ever heard of anybody that could play lead but couldn't play cords? Now you have.... i was taught the panatonic scale and from there i just played and played till me fingers bled but still cant do crap on cords. Think laziness and impatience has a bunch to do with it. Anyways....thanks for the video man
First , this will definitely help me at the very least some but I believe it’ll be a big jump off point for me to get back into playing ( trying to play…) along with backing tracks.. but just as importantly ,what’s this mystery SRV song “letter to my girlfriend “you speak of?? I thought I owned everything released from SRV’s catalogue (commercially released,at one point or another anyways ) now some old cds are gone I didnt reup in my iTunes catalogue of music ….but I don’t recall letter to my girlfriend even a little bit. Anyone know this song ?whn where it is? Imma heading over to i tunes right after this video to try and find it ,but just in case I can’t
These long videos are great Griff. Keep em coming. That's one of the things that separates your from the other blues guitar teachers online. You take the time to explain, demo in an instructive way, and most importantly teach.
The emphasis on counting makes your lessons really stand out. I have great difficulties mastering rhythm and lessons like these are very helpful. Thanks Griff!
Griff great lesson, I am learning open G I am doing Come an Go Blues and Never knew how much both by Gegg Allmen. Wondering if you could do a lesson on openG. I know the chords maj an min an some dim chords. I have searched for how to accent chotds. Somehow I new right away where harmonic notes were but watchng other players they are way more fluid an way more sure of theirselves. Thanks
I can't quite make out that chord shape for the Bb9th @ 8:20 tho , i looked thru my chord book too and don't see it , anyone know the shape he is using there ? thanks
Wow ! Griff ...I'm Blown Away" with this lesson. And I"ve watched sooo many over the last 5 years on here. To call out the songs that your giving the style in is so helpfull...Plus the dif rythms. I cant thank you enough ! Thanks and Holiday Greetings from Swansea, MA...A personal favorite (alltime) is your front porch blues lesson.(i forget the title). this one just took its place.
Griff ,you are an awesome blues player,i have your 29 jam tracks, and little wing lesson.the little wing lesson is so much fun to play, and u made it so simple to learn, even a cave man can do it.lol.i highly recomend the little wing DVD & book.trust me it opens alot of doors to ur playin.
Absolutely a great lesson Griff and I'm lovin' it in fact it's because of your courses I can now spot that in the Bb rhythm at the 10 min mark you start at the V chord then play the IV I V and go back to the start with the I chord. I can't believe I know this stuff :) Don
After 51 years of playing guitar I could say with confidence you have a gift to teach guitar, keep up the good work we always need good players. I also like your playing.
wish I knew how you get such a clean sound and tonal quality...Yes, I have pro gear, Marshall Tube amp, and Les Paul Standard Plus...cannot achieve same tone.
That's too bad. How long you have been playing? This is easy stuff,. I can get that tone with any decent guitar but prefer a PRS or Les Paul into a Mesa Boogie amp. I can switch to the clean channel on boogie or just lower the volume knob on the PRS when in dirty mode. I have been playing 37 years so if I can't play the blues, I am in deep trouble.
Same here, I'm rocking a les Paul standard with a Peavy classic 50. I'm positive it's my lack of knowledge on the electronics and fine detail to settings.
Great lesson. However, you can assume that your viewer know the chords. What if they don't? They might just navigate away from your lesson which is no good. In a 30 minutes video, you sure do have time to show the tabs of the half doesn't chords you're playing, for your your beginners... Can't ignore them, can you? Great stuff!
maybe not putting up tabs but it seems (I could be wrong) that you at least name the chords at the beginning of some sections but not others. Of course if it is a 12 or 8 bar we could figure them out but the partial chords aren't always that easy to see, real quick cover of the basic options would be cool too.. thanks!
So how do I use backing tracks to improve my playing? I didn't learn any principles in the time I watched this video, only how to play specific rhythms and licks.
I won't lie, it does take time, but it doesn't have to take as long as a lot of people make it out to take. Wow, David Duchovny plays blues holy shit!
One of the best guitar instruction videos I've ever seen. Just chock full of wisdom, and even advanced players can probably glean something from this. Thank you!
I freakin' love your channel. The information you share is brilliant. I don't think most people appreciate how good this is.
Sure, I'll take that. Loved the X-Files!

I forgot to ask a selfish question.... Would you be willing to share the jam trax? :)
the best way to improve is to play with other peopleand get a great teacher
I’m really glad this video came up when I searched for how to play guitar with jam tracks. I’m just going to go and do this right now, many thanks.

Best blues teacher on UA-cam hands down, thank you
The emphasis on counting makes your lessons really stand out. I have great difficulties mastering rhythm and lessons like these are very helpful. Thanks Griff!
He indeed looks like David Duchovny
who cares what he looks like, he is either helpful or not, so what is more important to you, the help or the looks?
It's David Duchovny's and Chevy Chase's love child.
Mulder with Fletch's hair?
Really useful lesson. Great how you make such simple licks sound so good. There is hope for me yet :)
I didn't know david duchovny played guitar man!!
8 lazy ass ppl :)
im lazyy :!! but i really loved this lesson thank man :D
Thank you David Duchovny, you are so right!
Can you please do a lesson on chords and how to find them on an accoustic guitar in the first two positions
Grif Hamlin you are one of the best teachers I have found on here

Griff where can I get some "JAM TRACK". I can purchase, do you know of any good ones for blues, blues/Rock.
That was really great. Thank you so much.
There is a lick that was on hot wired that Brent Mason did that seems to fit on the E chord surround 26 :28.
You use that guitar like a prestidigitator with a deck of cards. Simply magical.
Maybe. Just messing with you man. I enjoyed your lesson and have subscribed...looking forward to learning more. Thanks.

Don
I was miserable till I heard the rhythm
My God that guitar is stunning..how many guitars do you have Griff?
The truth is out there. Good stuff. Great examples of how really simple rhythms sound good when they're in time.
After 51 years of playing guitar I could say with confidence you have a gift to teach guitar, keep up the good work we always need good players. I also like your playing.
I'm good with my rhythm my lead playing is what I need to work on
Awesome instruction. What do you charge for in home lessons in NY? LOL!
Great job Griff ! Always loking for licks these are great and simple. Thanks again.
You are like one of the best teacher ever. I'm an advanced guitar player and commend you on your explanations.
Really great learning video...really great..!
Griff I saw you at the GC in Murrieta. Man you have great feel.
360p is not enough for this video.
The demo has been very helpful

David Duchovny???
GREAT !!!!
Super my friend.
awesome lesson. best I've had. thanks
By far the best guitar teacher I've found on YT.
Thanks Griff:)
wish I knew how you get such a clean sound and tonal quality...Yes, I have pro gear, Marshall Tube amp, and Les Paul Standard Plus...cannot achieve same tone.
could always go with fender amps for that clean sound.
That's too bad. How long you have been playing? This is easy stuff,. I can get that tone with any decent guitar but prefer a PRS or Les Paul into a Mesa Boogie amp. If you people dont know chords then they shouldn't be on an intermediate lesson. There are amazing videos that got me to understand the basics.

It's not David Duchovny it'd be Jason Patric.
So how do I use backing tracks to improve my playing? I didn't learn any principles in the time I watched this video, only how to play specific rhythms and licks.
