The funniest bit from the video for me was when Harris played that video of Tommy bragging about meeting Miyamoto, saying (paraphrased): "I met Miyamoto-san and we were both so excited to work together, and I was like 'I love your work on Mario and Zelda' and Miyamoto-san was like 'I love your work on, um'"
I about passed out laughing, even in Tommy's most delusional dream scenario that he's totally making up, he couldn't think of something that Miyamoto would be impressed by that he'd worked on. It was so funny, and so sad.

      @ELSTERLING Рік тому +65

Addendum - It has since transpired that, aside from the obvious, there is an actual interview with Miyamoto from Metroid Prime's development where he cites the sound effects made early in the game's development (where Tommy would have been in charge) as _not up to standard_ and in need of replacing. What are the odds Tommy's studio used their usual cheap canned SFX library and was fired for it and that Tommy's unusually poor opinion of Metroid Prime was based on sour grapes?

My favorite part is him talking about the OOF sound effect in a way someone would talk about some masterpiece of media. He makes it sound like they spent weeks or months perfectly crafting this half second sound effect when in reality it was probably one of a dozen different sound effects that were whipped up in a day for a game time forgot. Hell, it might even just be sampled from a movie.
I've been listening to you guys for years and even I didn't realize how bad Tommy was until I saw Hbomber's video. I thought this was just another rich dude having his mid-life crisis and there was a time when Tommy wasn't so bad. The thing with Tallarico and his defenders in the retro circle specifically was that it wasn't just a case of Tommy fooling fans as much as there were enough people in the community that wanted to believe in the idea of him. A 90s composer and former video game television host (who had stayed semi-active with Video Games Live) coming back to create a throwback console and trumpeting it up as significant somehow felt special to a lot of people. It was to segment of retro collectors/players a rock star esque figure that (despite his claims otherwise) was seemingly creating a console just for them and marking it as something cool rather than just a quirky novelty.
People didn't look into his long list of lies and half truths because there was something emotionally satisfying about having him as the quasi celebrity with a history of accomplishments directly or indirectly telling them they were significant as fans (or in some dubious cases, "friends"). A lot of people were essentially taken in because int their minds a person of semi-notability validated their hobby in a public and consistent way.

HBomberguy dropped a major BOMB last week, didn't he?
One of the best comments I read under the video was essentially:
"Tommy's cousin is friggin' Steven Tyler. Imagine that, for your entire life, no matter how much success you have making music for videogames, your cousin is in a hit rock band. He's ALWAYS bigger than you and what you do, and your family knows this. He's still always trying to boost himself up, and he will always have that hanging over him."
I'm not excusing his behavior, but as someone who always wanted to be a screenwriter, and who's cousin became an ACTUAL showrunner for a hit show on the CW... I kinda feel him.
(Though, I never dropped my cousin's name in any of the years I was trying to get writing work. I paved my own way with plays, and sketches, which led to bigger scripts. I also don't blatantly lie about personal accomplishments that can be fact-checked.)

I didn’t v watch that video game show he has in the two thousands and i has no idea he worked on earthworm Jim or messiah. Ironically With messiah i had been more aware of that game because of the involvement of a metal band called fear factory in its soundtrack. I had no idea what an egotistical, self aggrandizing self promoter tommy truly is until i saw H-bomb guys exposé. And the levels of his depravity are stunning. I had no idea there were so many layers to it. Most shocking of all was how it didn’t seem to require much digging to uncover. Nobody bothered before and most people either accepted his nonsense claims without question or they didn’t have time to listen to them at all. Tommy to his credit had amassed a small fortune off his grift and had he stayed in his lane his BS could have remained largely unknown. But he seemingly believed himself untouchable and kept pushing for that big last score to etch his name into history.
I like that the take away from the video is more than just “ oh boy, that Tommy d’amico..... what a scumbag huh”. It’s more about the world is full of Tommy Tallaricos who hog the limelight and take the credit while guys like Joey Kuras do all the hard work and are the unsung heroes who collect their paycheck and move on to the next job. Even in the work i do i see this a lot. I install solar systems primarily and a previous employer i has was a lot like Tommy. He’d sit all comfy in his air conditioned office making phone calls, telling people where to go and when a job was done well and a customer was happy he’d be the one notified by the sales company and would take all the credit and not even tell the workers (because excellence was expected i guess) but if something didn’t go well and a customer complained then it was suddenly all on the installer and he had nothing to do with it and was all too ready to throw the installer under the bus if he thought it would save his skin. Hell the USA has someone like that as el presidenté, a certain orange buffoon.

It's very similar to the guy who just stole all that money from Crypto Currencies. They found phone records and text messages from the guy saying everything he did to get people to trust him was all an act because his image and percieved reputation was far more valuable than the truth. That's how scam artists operate. Like the old saying goes: if it's too good to be true, it probably is.

Another situation that has a lot of parallels is the Star Citizen saga. Chris Roberts is another guy famous for working on games in the 90s who had a long layoff and a history of troubled productions and the Star Citizen game is still chugging despite very little progress. I'd love to hear your guy's opinion on that nonsense. Love the Amico coverage and it would've been cool for Hbomber to shout you out especially considering one of his themes in the video was people not being credited for their work.

    • @Pooky1991

Yeah. At this point Star Citizen can go multiple possible ways and most of them are pretty bad. The game will either force out an unfinished release, because they ran out of money again and couldn't keep the money train going. The game will continue to take money while doing the bare minimum to finish in order to continue getting money and never release, with dwiddling support. Or by some miracle decades from now when most people who cared about the game or either old or dead a finished game actually releases, but noone really care about it but the few who lost tons of money on it. I'm thinking the second due to the history of Chris Roberts and from the little bit i know about the game, it looks like a money pit that really has no reason to ever produce a finished product as long as whales and rapid supporters continously throw millions of dollars at the game while they dangle small levels of progress now and then to give the illusion that they are closer to a finished product.

Oh, you want your first unit to come out in a year and be manufactured in China? What’s the ETA to a prototype? Why don’t you have one yet? How many game developers have pledged orders?” Mark Cubin would’ve laughed them off the stage. “How much of your money have you invested in this thing?” “Well, I’m waiting for back….” “I’m out.”

An interesting question … rewriting history. People have always tried to do it in pretty much any field of endeavor. Is it easier in the modern age of the Internet … or harder? It seems like it should be easier because everything's digital and we've seen histories get rewritten in real time. Just change a few websites, silence a few dissenting voices, and boom! New reality. But clearly that was done before when things were all written in hardcopy.
My favorite example of the latter is The Road Ahead, that book from the 90s Bill Gates wrote. He said the Internet was a passing fad, although at this point only a few rare book collectors likely could prove it, because it was yanked off the shelves immediately while a new hastily-prepared printing was rushed to replace it saying the Internet was the biggest thing in the history of ever and of course he and Microsoft were totally meeting the challenges of a new reality head-on, and have been for quite some time.
It's a good example of the old-school "destroy everything written and pretend it never existed" way of rewriting history, and it happens to be one of the examples of someone attempting to do it where they weren't completely successful (largely because of the Internet admittedly) and because the consequences are minimal. A billionaire CEO had some egg on his face for a bit there, he clearly realized his mistake between the time of writing and the time of publishing, but no real harm or controversy arises from that.
I dunno if it's gotten easier or harder, just that the game is a lot older than the video game market. How you play it has changed in the past 30 years or so, that's all.

You can copywrite any sound file regardless of length. For instance drum sample packs; you can't repackage another company's drum samples and sell them as your own. You can't repackage a single snare sample and sell it as your own.
Edit: It's the recording itself in this case that has ownership, not the word or phrase or onomatopoeia.
I'm going to take a close look at the "oof" recordings compared here. I do forensic audio so I will see what I can come up with. If it is the same audio file that was transformed digitally it can easily be de-summed and returned back to its original form. I should still be able to find if it was transformed with analog equipment, although it won't sum or null completely.

@@Krushak8888 You can create your own soundalike "oof" to do whatever you want with. You can sell the file, license the file, give away the file, etc.
It's not the sound that has a copywrite nor is it the word that has the copywrite; it's the recording itself that you uniquely created that has the copywrite ownership. If you create a soundbite that you recorded yourself or had recorded for you, then you own it even if that small soundbite is imitating an already existing one.

I was really only addressing the fact that a singular sound recording is able to obtain copywrite.

@@legacyShredder1 I agree and your central point about the recording itself holding the copyright is an excellent point to make. I just remembered reading that Taylor Swift re-recorded some of her early albums to avoid conflicts with the record companies that held the rights to those recordings. I didn't even realize that an artist could pull that off but it makes sense. The record company owns a specific recording, it doesn't own the musical arrangements and the lyrics, so nothing stops an artist from making new versions.
