If you just spend the best part of an hour watching this perhaps slightly overly long video then thank you so much. That is certainly all the reward that I need. If, however, you by chance want to reward my work a little more I have just set up a Patreon where you can do so. Be rest assured that any contribution is appreciated immensely.

Dude, already signed up. Extremely excited for your upcoming work. 👊🏼
I don’t remember subscribing to this channel, but I’m glad it found me...
Your content is superb in both production and content. The animations were clean and illuminating. I realize that there needs to be simplification in compressing such a topic into one hour but I appreciate that I didn’t quite capture all the nuances in my first viewing, i.e. it does NOT ‘feel’ dumbed-down. I hope this video gets as many hits as your last one...and I hope you feel no rush to kick out the next one.
You followed my advice!!!!! Kudos for you and you have another signed up patreon with me.

This was the purpose of UA-cam. If you want everything with a price then internet is gone.
Well, but nothing happens without someone spending money, time, education or energy. Or all four. So, like listener-sponsored radio, which many people enjoy for years without supporting with contributions, high-quality UA-cam channels will also eventually need users’ economic support. I try to contribute to my favorite channel-Cool Worlds (incredible astronomy)-just as I support my local NPR stations-KQED and KALW.
The most advanced democracies have vigorous civil society cultures and sectors, which try to remain accessible to all without regard to wealth. If we want a decent civil society culture to thrive in social media, then the thoughtful, principled and financially abled among us will act accordingly.
Yeah, its really well written and executed 😎
yeah the only cost is watching 2 hours of 5 sec ads
This was NatGeo level of detail and production. I feel like breaking the law for watching this for free
Where is it written that good stuff must be hidden behind a paywall?
Also, this young channel is very successful already, with only 4 videos published.
I'd say it has already generated more money than many old channels with way fewer views.
If they keep it up, the subscriber count is eventually going to explode, along with the number of supporters on Patreon.
This is a money maker, make no mistake.
It's financed by the government or a special ring of people.

As a Wildlife enthusiast, this is literally one of, if not my favorite documentary I've seen. Seriously, you've done an amazing job creating this. I get so exhausted of the digestible, fast-and-loose style documentaries that ultimately teach you like 5 facts and then mostly just exploit the cute or shocking factors for general audiences. This is so incredibly educational and I wish there were more like this, I'm looking forward to more of your content!
I agree, this video is well done and informative, more so than many wildlife videos I've seen that are click-baity or low-resolution and just try to shock or rely on exploiting novelty and their entertainment value instead of really explaining things like this does

The fact that I never considered the concept that mimicry isn’t a voluntary decision, and the animal doesn’t even realize that they’re mimicking another animal just blew my mind
Apart, perhaps, the mimic octopus, which - despite having involuntarily evolved the capacity to change it's appearance to simulate toxic/venomous organisms - does seem to have the intellectual capacity to deliberately select which of it's repertoire to use at any given moment - putting the behavior a step above instinct.
Yeah, absolutely mind boggling
The way we talk and think about biology is very much grounded in terms that suggest agency, combine that with how we naturally assign agency to things that aren't even alive, let alone capable of thinking even the most simple of thoughts, and that kind of surprise is common.
Its why pretty much every time pop-sci content talks about evolution, it almost always has to remind us of that fact.
@@TheGreatDanish you’re absolutely correct about that.
When I taught insect ID at university I would frequently be asked things like “why don’t stingless bees have stingers?” When the answer to such a question is “it didn’t prevent its parents from reproducing and is heritable.”
Turns out evolution is neither intentional nor does it directionally move towards favorable forms in all cases. Sometimes it’s just not fatal.
Like take the trout stream beetle, a rare aquatic beetle which cannot swim.
It's like when you draw something on your own, and then you figure out someone drew something similar long before you.
i literally cannot imagine a higher production value video on this subject. Bar none, its extremely well produced, very informative, and astonishingly edited. The audio, the visuals, this is probably one of the best informative videos i have ever seen, better then most even put on television.
This is literally one of the most amazing videos I've ever seen. It's concise, intriguing, well explained, everything--from beginning to end, I never zoned out. I always had wondered about mimicry, but I never knew it went this deep...thank you for the dive!

50:25 "Thanks to the ability of the Cuckoo to adapt to a wide variety of hosts", you could say they've evolved to, as a species, not put all their eggs in one basket ;)
I wonder if that’s were that phrase came from.
The hosts also adapt by making harder and harder shells. There was a study about it shown on YT. Cuckoo's being sly has inadvertently created a scenario where the hosts eggs are also improving.
@@beastmaster0934 no, it's not. It comes from literally carrying eggs in baskets. If a basket breaks or is dropped the eggs will crack. If you have more than one basket the likelihood of breaking all your eggs in case of an accident is smaller.
@@Jadae What is the advantage of having harder shells?
@@renerpho Cuckoo's will blackmail the host's by threatening to toss the host's eggs out if the host doesn't raise the Cuckoo baby. Harder/Thicker shells make it so the babies can survive higher drops, making it harder for the Cuckoo to blackmail the host. You constantly drop your baby? Change lover to have thicker skulled babies and the baby will be safer.
This needs to be watched again on a TV. To say this is good is an understatement. This could air on any cable or PBS station.
Tbh I even think it should be mandatory in every school biology syllabus. It is that great.
I had the same thought
Honestly, it’s more engaging that a lot of other nature work - Bc this explores a CONCEPT across species and locales, instead of just exploring all the things in more locale. This is much for engaging to me personally

Dont worry - I wont! But feature-length is maybe a bit too much to handle for one guy. I think if I can stay somewhere between 15-25 minutes that should still be enogh time to explore most topics in a satisfying fashion.
@@deepdive8755 Thanks for the reply and heads up, I appreciate it! If I were to give some honest advice, I think you are right to aim for shorter videos since you are working by yourself. I think there is still a place for your longer videos though, but only for the topics you personally hold dear. I think data collection and script writing would feel much easier and go by much faster on the topics you are personally motivated to cover. I love how long this is, and how much detail, research and concepts I get through, and I am just half way and paused to tell this. I hated school so much but videos like these actually interest me for whatever reason, and so now I know so many concepts about biological mimicry. I expected a couple examples, but this 1 hour dive is really great
"Maybe all the wasps are mimicking me! Huh, you ever thought of that, tough guy?" - Hover fly with something to prove

Imagine virus, they dont do even their own proteins
@@Hansulf "lol" said virophages "lmao"
@@ILiekFishes "What are proteins anyways?" - Said Viroids xd
One of the concepts I noticed wasn't really present in the video was energy conservation as being a prime concept for both mimicry and why the hosts were pressured into their selections, as well. Cuckoos being lazy isn't that strange when this concept is introduced, and countless animals survive based on this concept as well. How they conserve energy just differs by archetype. Venomous snakes, for example, try to conserve as much as possible. They're cold-blooded, their venom can take a long time to repopulate, dry bites are common, and elongated fights increase its likelihood of dying after or being attacked the next day when it has no venom left for defense. Concepts like this should be considered when examining all of the concepts of Coral Snake mimicry, for example. Also, if you pair up energy conservation with convergent evolution, one may be able to see what its advantageous for mimics and hosts to commingle in a niche. Why certain color patterns for that locale could be a part of the puzzle in mimicry models. These concepts should not be missed.
You should watch the movie Valarium

That Spider Tailed Horned Viper was amazing! The way it curled the end of it's tail in a circular motion, looked exactly like a spider that was basically running in circles. And the remainder of their camo was so good, that the rest of the body and head of the snake blended seamlessly into the rocks behind them. So all you really noticed or saw at first glance was the "spider". Very cool.
Bruh. This is more interesting and fun to watch than my teacher back in highschool.

When I saw the length of this video, I was hesitant to watch it, but man, it was a wonderful surprise. I finished watching the entire video and loving everything about it. The visuals and images and clear, simple explanations really grabbed my attention. Before watching this, I thought that as a human being with a big brain, I would not fall for these mimicry tricks, but lo and behold, I did. The examples of nearly perfect mimicry in this video made me paused a few seconds to make sure that it was real. I am truly amazed at this and would definitely recommend it to students. Thank you so much for putting out this video and I'm looking forward to watching more.

"Spiders can mimic ants"

The third masterpiece I watch from your channel, I really felt I had to comment. Great documentary, as expected! A "second part" talking about forms of mimicry in plants (look up Vavilovian mimicry) would be great. I don't mind lengthy videos such as this one, these interesting topics have a lot to cover. I find impressive the way you illustrate your script by putting high-quality relevant images, graphics, quotes or videos as you talk, that's highly appreciated (I generally dislike when random -somewhat related, but lacking context or relevance- content is thrown in). I like how content is structured into chapters, it makes it easier to follow up (if you watch it in two separate days). Overall, I feel both instructed and entertained, and that is not an easy task!
