On the old proof coin sets, getting deep cameo proof coins was fortuitous. This was because in olden days, proof coin dies were not as robust as they are nowadays with modern technology. In olden days, the frosted portion on the proof coin dies was achieved by acid etching with a mordant. The frosted portion on proof coin dies was delicate and did not retain their frosted contrast for very long. This was because after repeated proof coin strikings, the frosted contrast portion would fade until it was not too noticeable. Deep cameo proof coins were among those that were struck when the proof coin dies were still fresh. On the other hand, with modern proof coin die technology, many more deep cameo proof coins can be struck. This is because on modern proof coin dies, the frosted portion is nowadays achieved by either glass bead blasting or by laser etching. Modern proof coin dies also receive a hardened surface treatment for prolong durability such as with titanium dioxide coating or hard chromium plating.

I bought a family member 4 consecutive years of the U.S. Proof sets from Philadelphia. Started with 1959, 1960,1961 and then 1962. The dime, quarter and half dollar are silver. This cost me around 120 dollars if I remember right. I got them all in one group deal. It made for a good Christmas gift.

That sounds like a great Christmas present and a good price considering.

I live in Switzerland and such sets are very hard to find in my country. I have a prestige set 1993 two bincenntial sets 1776-1976 (3 coins in 40 percent silver) one in proof and one uncirculated.
Yesterday i bought 10 x 1982 George Washington half dollars. 5 in the blue box, (uncirculated) one in the red box (proof) and 4 just in plastic sealed (denver mint) without the box. I paid only 100 swiss francs for it. It was a very good price.
P.S: Two months ago i got a canada 1967 coin set uncirculated. I paid 25.40 swiss francs with shipping fees for it. It was a really good price too.

I have a similar issue trying to get certain world coins. So many people in the US only collect coins from the US that the supply of coins from other countries is very low. When I want specific coins or sets my cheapest option is to find an eBay seller in Europe and pay around $30 USD for shipping.

European junk silver i can find but from East Europe sometimes harder to find. Old silver coins from South America, Africa, Middle East and Asia are for me difficult to find. I use a online bidding platfrom from Switzerland (not eBay). If i find one than i pay usually more. Very expensive are old chinese or japanese silver coins. I have 4 x french indochina 1 piastre but i had to pay around 50 swiss francs for each one. Be aware many fake French indochina 1 piastre out there!

I found if you don't get them in cellophane, you can get them in different types of hard plastic cases for cheaper. I'm not sure if people are cherrypicking the mint and proof sets and making their own and reselling them or what. But you still get good mostly uncirculated coins for cheap. I was getting them for like $20 about 5 years ago. And you were getting silver half dollars, quarters, and dimes for that price.

That might be what I need to purchase for the 1955 set and for the even older ones when I try to get them. I default to wanting the original government packaging but is it really worth paying the premium? (Right now, based on buy it now prices on eBay it would save me about $30 on the 1955) Also, you bring up a good point with the best coins having been picked out.

My brother left me a box of sets, from the 50s and 60s. The cheapest circulated pre 1965 is my fav to stack.

Nice! I don’t really have any relatives who collect who have or will leave me anything.
I like foreign silver as a stacking option because I see it more often with lower premiums than US pre 1966 silver. It has downsides though like availability and recognizability.

    From 1959 through 2023, I'm missing four; 1961, 1962, 1976 & 1977. I expect to fill those holes and add the 2024 this year.

Unfortunatelly in Switzerland the first officially coin sets by Swiss Mint were introduced in 1974. No silver coins anymore back then. That's why i don't collect swiss coin sets.

It’s too bad they didn’t make proof sets earlier. I consider the design of Swiss coins to be quite beautiful. It would be an awesome set with some silver coins in it.

You can get a1954 proof set for around $120.00

    • @CoinMetallurgist
      @CoinMetallurgist  7 місяців тому

Is that in original government packaging? If so then I might need to move that one up the list too. I intend to get it eventually but I have its priority low at this point because of cost.

By the way. About 4 years ago I had gotten a 54 proof set in OGP. For $ 75.00 . After I got home and looked at the coins the Franklin hafe was so nice I sent it to NGC for grading. When I got it back NGC graded it PR 69 * I sent it to Great Collections and it sold for $ 2550.00 I really enjoyed that.
