    Fabulous loco. Used to love that whistle on my regular journeys on the trans Pennines back in the early 80's.

    Saw / cabbed many 40's in the mid-70's when I worked as a shunter at Blackburn goods yard. Wonderfully powerful and impressive machines...

    Great video, thanks! My question : These 40's seem not have the same 'tractor' -sound as 37's , different engine perhaps or am i just wrong? Greets from Finland!

      The Class 37s have an EE V12 where as the Class 40s have a EE V16.

    • @bjoe385
      @bjoe385 3 роки тому +1

      They do a bit under heavy load, the engine design is similar but the 37’s V12 is inter-cooled which seems to muffle the whistling sound make by EE’s non inter cooled engines like that in the class 40. The class 37 has about 14 more horsepower per cylinder and it revs 100 rpm higher than the engine in the class 40, also by virtue of being a V12 instead of a V16 the exhaust profile is different. I think it’s a combination of less whistle, higher rpm, more power per cylinder and different exhaust shape that leads to the different sound.

      I think the 40s sound more like a pair of 20s than a 37...

    BR: we need a 2000hp diesel to pull express trains and goods
    P1: Use the 1750 engine with Co-Co bogies
    P2: put 2 wheels in front of it
    P3: slap 2 turbos

      Actually the D200s came first (1958); the D6700s (Class 37) entered service from 1960.
