      @@esmooth919 Maybe, but in a game as full of different variables like Zelda is, passwords would need to be long as all hell. Having to spend five minutes per day noting down the password when you turn off the console, and five more to input it when you open it again, would be a pretty big turnoff.

      How many different variables are there though? It's mostly whether you have acquired each item, defeated each boss and talked to certain npcs. That's basically a long list of bits. I'm pretty sure that with some clever encoding, Zelda 1 could work on a savecode basis.

    My dad and I played this game for hours on end and beat it with all the hearts, with no internet (early 90s) and no guides. It was such a great feeling once we beat it.

    The thing people miss about the first game is that you weren't meant to play it blind. It came with a map that detailed where to find the first 6 dungeons and the manual contained hints on how to find the last 3. You were meant to use it as a guide and take notes on it.
    Later rereleases of the game have frustratingly never included this map which makes the game way harder than it was ever intended to be.

      True, I didn't have a map and I found dungeon 2, then 1 and then 6!. I wouldn't get the hint of the harder enemies and felt like there had to be something good that way since it was guarded by more enemies. I crossed the map a bunch if times and never did I found dungeon 3. If I would have drawn a simple grid map I would have discovered that I obviously missed a square, but I ended up downloading a map. I just didn't have enough time back then to figure everything out by myself.

      Ya, I remember having a laminated paper map that came with the game. I believe it was the actual tile art printed out scaled very small. I remember marking the burnable bushes on it when I found them.

      Shit. I found dungeon 3 before I found dungeon 2 oh, and I found dungeon 6 before I found dungeon 4. I had to play this game blind, because I bought it used, and unfortunately, I did have to turn to the internet for some things that did stump me.

      @@esmooth919 Finding the dungeons out of order because that's just how you were exploring is why this is one of my favorite games. I remember getting the candle and immediately going back to that obvious burnable bush to see what it was hiding, and found a level. I looked up and saw the number 8, and my jaw dropped. I was so giddy at finding a level early that I proceded knowing that I had only beaten the first 2 and couldn't possibly make it through.
      I think having a map kinda kills that whole "explore, see what you find, you may even find a dungeon" thing. If you already know where to go, you aren't exploring anymore.

    There was this sense of wonder and mystery when exploring the screens of the first game. It was rewarding in a way that most games I've played completely miss.

    That quote communicating with your friends is pretty interesting. A couple of my friends and I all picked up BOTW when it launched and we were constantly talking to each other, trying to figure out secrets and such. They really did go back to their roots

    9:57 I remember when this game came out. We all looked for answers everywhere we could. But the funnest way WAS meeting at the park and everyone exchanging information. Some of my most vivid memories were playing at the park with other kids and everyone talking about the game and secrets. It was a moment in time that I don't think ever came before or since. The internet is great, but those budding days of exploration in hard games were epic.

    This video made me pick up Breath of the Wild again and finally complete the game. I had about 50 hours into the game and for whatever reason had completed zero Divine Beasts (was trying to do it all myself w/ zero help), so the quote from Miyamoto saying he actually wanted other players to collaborate got me asking around as to how to find stuff. Instead of being frustrated with it as I was before, I ended up really enjoying the game. Thank you!

      The one thing I wish breathe of the wild didn't do, is give up the map markers that tell you were to look. Discovering the locations would have been fun. The sad thing about games today, is they're always holding your hand and guiding you. Breathe of the wild was close and its still good, it's just they should have got rid of those guide markers.

    Maybe it is weird to say but for me one of the best things about the original loz is the game manual. The Zelda universe came to life because of it. The game manual had backstory, lore and great artwork. Also the hints and a piece of the overworld map they included were great. I spend hours of reading the game manual (I was very young lol). I can't imagine playing the loz without the game manual.

    I wish you had mentioned the "Second Quest". After you beat the game, you can start the game again to play a much more advanced version where the dungeons are very well hidden, with totally different layouts from the first quest. Hints are more vague (or even misleading), there are entirely new enemies, new game mechanics, and it's just overall a version of the same game set to an adult difficulty level, with almost a bizarro dream world feeling. Beating Zelda 1, Second Quest, with no guidance, is an amazing experience. I was usually able to make at least one new discovery every session that I played, but not always. Try it!

    While the game may seem oblique upon first play, you have to remember the difference between the way games were presented back then versus today. Back then, with rom sizes and system resources being limited, a great deal of the adventure is told to you in the accompanying full-color instruction manual. It was amazing how much that little booklet and even Nintendo's strategy guide made the game seem far more expansive than it actually was. It felt like you being given a document that guides you into the world of Hyrule, and the golden game cartridge itself seemed like a treasure that was part of the experience.
    It's certainly a far different experience than simply playing it via the Virtual Console.

    This game was absolutely mind blowing back in the 80s.. I was just 4 when it came out and had no idea wtf to do, couldn't even read but still made some fond memories running around stabbing bad guys... Breath of the wild comes out in one week and I really hope it takes me to the same place.

      I was 1 when the original released, but it was the first video game that I ever played a few years later. I fondly remember so many of the things mentioned in this video, including talking to other players about finding secrets and where to go next. It was amazing for its time, especially considering you could only talk to the people you actually knew IRL who owned the game, since there was no internet.

    Breath of the Wild definitely did go back to its roots. It strikes me as a much more in depth and modern version of the original game with its "go anywhere, any time...as long as you can survive" ways.

      dungeon design was the same dungeon x4. I dunno why people overlook the boss fights in botw. They had no individuality.

      @@calebb7012 Yeah botw sucks balls. Zelda 1 was way better despite being so much older. And I think Zelda 1 was actually one of the (possibly the) weakest in the series, even though it's great, because they continued to make the series even better and better over time. Then they through it all away with botw trying too hard to make zelda 1 version 2.0... and yet it lacked much of what made zelda 1 so great. The secrets, the mystery, the unlockable items used to progress further, the interesting dungeons and boss fights. Botw has litterally none of that.
      Yes skyward sword went way too far with the handholding (and so did oot and TP), but that doesnt mean they had to throw the whole plot and atmosphere and detail and magic and intelligence down the toilet like they did. They could've just made a less annoying (or no) companion. That was the only problem they needed to fix lol

    I completed this game on mini nes for the first time ever in 2017. Im 38 and just never finished it back in the day. Absolutely amazing game. Aged so well.

      You should look up some speed run challenges and try those. Not to speed run it, but to add a different twist or complexity to a game. It adds life to the game and a new experience for it. Just do what I do and try them without speed running it, just doing the challenges in their speed runs. No sword is a wild one.

      Check out the top speed runs for Zelda 1 - it's incredible how fast they can beat it. There are tricks such as knowing how to kill different enemies to get different items from them, which allows you to beat the game early.

    It's awesome to see you have so much love for the original legend of Zelda when you've only first played it in the last couple of months. It's hard for me to imagine a fan of the original NES game and not having it be one of their childhood staples. I was 4 years old when I first played it, and I was 7 or 8 when I finally beat it. And yes, it did involve me putting bombs and flames pretty much everywhere to finally figure out where to go next. It was a completely incredible experience playing it as a kid, you should've been there man!

    YES! I played The Legend of Zelda back in 1986 when it first came out and I try to explain this to everyone who didn't get to experience this themselves. Going to play the game, exploring and finding a new area, getting stuck or getting lost and then going to school the next day to talk to your friends and ask them where they are, swap information, new tricks. This was something that was an amazing culmination of a beautiful adventure game and pre-internet formats that allowed us to have the mystery we wanted while encouraging the conversation and collaboration with our peers. This is what made a single player game into an event that built, or further enforced, real world friendships.
    I used to say that this was a magic that was lost and could never be had again, but I've never tried any of the games listed in your video. Guess I know what games to buy and check out now, if for nothing else than to have a small taste of that nostalgic feeling once again.

    This 'work out the mystery' thing is just how RPGs worked back then. Adventure on the 2600 was a "figure it out" game, as was the first dragon quest and phantasy star.

      Most dungeon crawlers back then had a ”draw your own map on graph paper”-motif as well. Quest log? No, you were supposed to write that down if you want a quest log.

    I find it funny how accurately you were able to describe breath of the wild, without even playing it. I love so many things about it, but the music is really just beautiful, I could go on and on about how their so contextual, the nostalgia they provoke in long time players, the feeling of elation when you hear a song from an earlier game and how the songs always seem to be just right for any moment. It's just damn lovely

      SeanTheCajun you could go about 20 years without playing it like I did...it won't be a brand new game as I still remembered some major parts, but there were also some things I had forgotten as well. I'd like to experience A link to the past new one more time, but unfortunately (or fortunately) I play through that game usually once a year so that's impossible. A link between world's was like a godsend though. I definitely had a fan boy moment the first time I booted it up

      Plenty of great rom hacks out there. I strongly recommend Zelda Outlands, it's a complete reimagining of Zelda 1 with new mechanics that all constrain within the limits of the original LoZ (it is a rom hack and not a completely new game after all) with new graphics and even tweaked music.
      The only thing is, it is HARD. You don't even get a sword until partway through the first dungeon, and EVERYTHING is moved around and made more obtuse, and because it's not especially well known (or it wasn't when I played it anyway) hints on where to go next are hard to find.

The things I want to forget are things like the location of the 7th dungeon and the 3rd sword, both of which I thought were never hinted at, but apparently there are hints for them according to the video. 100% blind would be ideal, but the main point is to forget the most cryptic stuff so I could figure it out by the game's hints.

      You could always try out randomizers, sure you probably already know how to do the dungeons and all that, but they typically focus more on exploration (alttp randomizer is especially on this, since every chest outside of minigames is randomized meaning you could potentially sequence break like crazy, Zelda 1 is more on finding dungeons, but the item locations vary too). Makes the game more interesting without changing up the game itself too much.

      cheaper and no real reason to do it anymore. These days you can find everything online. ... but yea, I remember buying games at my retail store, 60 kilometers away from home and reading them during the one hour train ride. got me always excited.

    Zelda kind of HAD to depart from its roots when it moved into 3d. They couldn't have made an open world zelda game in the n64 or gamecube era without sacrificing the polish that they require of this series. Only now is it possible for them to return to their roots and maintain the same quality.

      It makes sense. There was some severe limitations and the hardware wasn't helping either. I don't blame Nintendo sticking to a formula that works. I'm just glad that now we will finally see a Zelda game finally return to it's roots. Something I've been waiting for a very long time.

      What in the world are you talking about? Zelda departed from its roots arguably as early as Zelda II or A Link to the Past, and certainly by Link's Awakening.
      Ocarina of Time was basically A Link to the Past's structure with Link's Awakening-tier linearity, but in 3D. Change in dimensions aside, it was not at all a departure for the series.

      I'm really excited about that. Nintendo will most likely put some of the toughest monsters and traps there so you don't just accidentally wander in. You have to force yourself in, similar to the eighth dungeon of NES Zelda.

    Wow. This video was absolutely brilliant. Hit a particular note with me, as I always recall gettiing Zelda for NES for Christmas back when I was 6. My older siblings admittedly took the drivers seat while I "helped" with the map. There was just NOTHING like it at the time. Especially with on Internet, and living in a relatively quiet town in Australia. What a time to be alive.
    This video hit all those reasons and more, on what that game done well, as well as what seems to be missing with the current "hand holding" iterations. Thanks again for this.

    I agree that more current Zelda games strayed away from the "open world" approach. That being said, I still like them and Twilight Princess is still my favorite overall. If the dungeons are fun and I like the characters then I don't mind linearity at all.

      Twilight Princess had a lot of good dungeons, which I found to be quite interesting. I didn't care much for the rest of TP but the dungeons. Windwaker, on the other hand, had style and joy outside of the dungeons, but some of the most lacking dungeons in the series.

      it's the same kind of argument in Final Fantasy, and like Zelda I like most of the entries in each franchise for different reasons. And so, everyone has their favorite(s) based on what they like the most in a game. There is no right of wrong answer, just personal taste.

      Skyward Sword is the only Zelda I have had no desire to go back to. I enjoyed it just enough to finish it that first time playing but not enough to feel like playing it again. Especially after Breath of the Wild. Going from a huge wide open world to a really restrictive linear "world" would be a huge step back. That game still has a certain charm, though, so maybe I'll play it again one of these days. As for Final Fantasy, the only main entry I really don't like is XIII. Just terrible, in my opinion.

    i beat zelda 1 when i was a child. it was magical.
    recently i played it again. with my own rules. no outside help. no asking anyone. no looking anything up.
    it was tough. but i managed to beat the game. one thing i had completely forgotten is that it had teleportation chambers.....i took copious notes and made my own map of the overworld.
    i also noticed that game basically has just 5/6 songs:
    title
    overworld
    dungeon
    final dungeon
    game over/ end
    and you spend the vast majority of your time with just overworld and normal dungeon music, but it didnt feel boring.
    ones question i've always asked myself....the guy who gives you the second sword once you reach 5 hearts.....would he give you the sword even if you dont have the first sword?

    I played Zelda when it first came out. It really was like you said. The emotions it produced have rarely been matched since. Your insight on what made the game great is amazing for somebody who didn't grow up with it (that blue Darknut room in level 5 held us back for a very long time). Probably the best Zelda video I've ever seen.

    It was fun watching this video today. I've seen it before, but I just randomly felt like speedrunning through the game a few times and it made me want to play BotW again. The question you pose at the end about whether or not BotW will be like the original. I think it's safe to say that the series did go back to its roots.

    I've played the first Zelda for the first time only a couple of months ago and I was pleasantly surprised, I actually found it to be pretty amazing.
    I did tihnk that without a walk through certain things are pretty plain impossible to find out.

    I played Zelda in 1991 when I was 8 and it took me 3 years to complete. It was for me the game that turned me into a gamer. It's the biggest masterpiece ever designed.

      Name your character Zelda and just about all the locations of dungeons, certain items and hidden rooms are changed. You'll get dungeon items out of order, labryinth maps are totally opposite, bosses that are later on show up early, but it adds to the replayability. Its a simple game that just about everyone knows and even after 30yrs I STILL waltz through this effortlessly plus...I own both 1 and 2 in gold copies 😁😎

      I absolutely love Zelda II as well! The mix of the overworld and the third-person action scenes is great, and allowed for a lot more world-building. I still remember going into the towns and hopping around talking to people. Such an incredible game. It's only underrated because it's compared to Zelda I, which is a tough comparison for any game. Super Mario 3 and Legend of Zelda were the pinnacles of NES gaming, and gaming as a whole.

    I absolutely loved Zelda 1 and it's non-linear structure, but I have to say, linear does not always equal bad and non-linear does not always equal good. The Legend of Zelda series is by far my favorite, and I love every entry regardless of how linear it is (Skyward Sword is one of my favorites, just behind Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess) or how non-linear it is (I loved the first Zelda and am certain that Breath of the Wild will take Twilight Princess' place as my favorite Zelda game).

      Obviously linear doesn't always mean bad. The overwhelming majority of games are linear. That's why Zelda stood out so much when it hit the NES. Because of that the kind of audience that flocked to the franchise are the kind of people who like to explore and therefore are more inclined to appreciate a less linear experience.

    I thought breath of the wild was going to be more of the wordless adventure of old, granted with npc's to dump information, but the cutscenes has me wondering how that'll clash with the tone and what new tone will be made as a result. I hope it actually works and doesn't become jarring, but I'll probably enjoy the retro freedom either way.
    There's just something about cutscenes that make the world seem staged and waiting for you instead of alive without you. And I'm not sure they can get around that.

      I'm predicting it'll be Skyrim-esque in it's design. You can follow this one long main quest, or branch off and do other smaller quests for Lucan Valerius. Though I hope it does give less direction.

      Aonuma said that he accomplished a story that can be skipped entirely using a "trick". I breathed a sigh of relief. Since Wind Waker, I've hated Zelda's nonsensical, outlandish, perpetually-history-rewriting storylines. But I think that BotW's story may actually be decent, from what I've seen and heard.

      Nazareadain That's a matter of managing the players perspective. The more information you extract out of the world and interpret, the more personal it will feel - like it is an entity unto itself that you are communicating with. When things are further framed by the designers - so as to coax out meaning for the player to digest - the experience starts to feel more artificial. This is something I bring up a lot when people talk about wether Link is/should be a defined character and the confusion Anouma seems to have with this makes me less confident about BotW.

    4:16 Let me tell you... as a 5 year old boy I could only make it to level 3. It was seriously like a moon shot level task for me and my friends. We never beat it... we just made it to the last level and got rocked for hours a day. I beat it in front of my own son the first time a few years ago. I was pretty emotional. He didn't understand but he watched me play and that was enough for me.

    But to answer your question, yes this game was amazing in the 80s for us kids (who are now old guys). It's one of my favorite games still, and something I can just fire up and play through today and still have fun with it.

      I actually didn't complete Zelda 1 until late last year. I played it quite a bit when I was younger, but it didn't hold my interest enough to beat it at the time. I finally decided to read a guide and actually complete the game.

As much as exploring the Japanese countryside sounds, I'm actually sitting in front of a TV and my time is better used actually playing instead of wondering around for hours just to come across the same dungeon I beat 2 hours ago...again. If you've got a better memory than I do, congrats.

      DelDuio I wasn't even born yet when the original Zelda came out (I wouldn't be til later in 1986). I didn't play it until barely half a year or so after Ocarina of Time came out, and even then on an emulator. I started out with a Sega Genesis and didn't have a Nintendo system til the N64 came out.

    I bought the first Zelda when it came out. I was a teenager, and I remember that it completely blew my mind and made me realize that video games would never, ever, be the same. This game, with a nod to metroid as well, introduced the concept of epic adventure in video games. Before this, games were still just as linear as they were in the arcade. Of course I bought every Zelda game at launch after that, and here we are 30 years later. The day BotW came out, I played it all day and remarked at how playing it made me feel like the first time I played the gold NES cartridge all those years ago. While the two games are different in an infinite number of ways, Nintendo did manage to re-capture that feeling of overwhelming awe and excitement in a huge adventure. The comparison is spot on.

      No, you need the fastest response time on the A+B buttons. Movement, particularly in the NES era, was not as critical as precise action buttons.

    Despite more recent Zelda games being more linear and story driven, I still experienced that sense of adventure and exploration. Ocarina of Time was my first and it also had secrets for me to discover, new areas to explore, and maze like dungeons to navigate. I often had to refer to the strategy guide for help because there were certain points in the game when I just couldn't figure out how to progress. Yeah, there were some times when the game told me where to go next but I still had the freedom to figure out how to get there on my own and what to do before then. I do agree however that Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword restricted your freedom the most.

      I thought Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask had a way bigger sense of discovery than Breath of the Wild. Like, in OOT you place a bomb on the ground and find a cave with a cow in it. In Breath of the Wild you just stumble upon things and those things that nearly always lead to orbs or seeds. The game says ''shrine quest'' before you can take the time to thing about what it is.

    Like you say I really think the Dark Souls series is in some ways the continuation of this style. Little to no explanation, and you should collaborate with other players for hints and ideas. And a maze of exploration...

    After watching the video, it seems like whether Zelda 1 is a great game or a terrible one (in 2017, specifically) hinges a _lot_ on whether going and reading the manual, asking your friends, or going to any other source of information should be considered "part of the game". In the modern era with its entire internet, that's generally a "no" because of how instantly the entire game can be completely spoiled, not just with the information floating around your school, but all the information everywhere, ever. Notable exceptions where spoilers are fine (or encouranged) include highly competitive PvP games, ARGs, and Minecraft-likes which often require a wiki walk - but in general there's an implicit contract today, which didn't exist in the 80s when Zelda 1 was created, that the video game shall have everything the players needs to play it, no instruction manual required.
    The importance of that expectation and the acceptability of breaking it will vary from player to player. If I die too much in an action game and feel like I'm not making headway, I have no problem turning down the difficulty. On the other hand, after wandering around for a couple hours in Zelda 1 without getting a new item or beating a dungeon, or enduring a 30-minute slog of a battle with some skeletons at the outset of Dark Souls, my first impulse is not to "turn down the difficulty" by cracking open a GameFAQ and finding out where to go next; when I have to resort to human sources outside the game, it feels (to me personally) like an abject failure of the design, and I generally stop playing the game altogether. Again, this will vary dramatically from person to person, but generally that "with your friends" aspect of gaming seems to have drifted, with the rise of the internet, more toward direct gameplay mechanics like trading Pokémon, and away from anything that can be found with a simple Google search.
    What I'm getting at is that going this "open" with the adventure, saying, "I dunno, here's the game, go... run around in it or something," like a negligent babysitter, is probably never going to have the same broad appeal as a more directed experience. It often leads to very successful works, with die-hard fans, but "die-hard" tends to be the only kind of fan that such games have - for everyone else, it doesn't even _begin_ to click. Small wonder that Nintendo has gravitated towards games that kids have a decent chance at getting through without needing to risk having anything "spoiled" by the internet. I don't doubt Nintendo can "pull off" a game like Zelda 1; the real question is, do they have the genuine desire to, given the risk of a reduced market that such a design often brings?

      just because so much has changed in 30 years, they can't go all the way back to the roots, but I think they can get a lot closer to those roots yet still maintain a modern feel. It's a great game (Zelda 1) yet very much a game for its time.

      Why do you always have to strive to have the biggest share of the whole games market? Market is composed of niches, people like different things, and niche doesn't have to be small aka unprofitable. This is extremely sad, instead of precise targeting of your audience you have to make a product for everyone thus reducing the overall variety. What saddens me the most is that it's not just developers and publishers - it's the very gamers that adopted this mindset: "a good game has to appeal to as many people as possible", instead of "a good game is the one that best serves its target audience".

      You're not wrong, but I'm guessing that they wouldn't typically consider that an effective use of the Legend of Zelda IP. Nintendo is not one to shy away from niche games, but they either make a new IP or they make a spinoff game that's clearly not part of the main series (e.g. Captain Toad).

      Like, really, Dark Souls. Dark Souls shows how this spoiler potential is utterly meaningless, as people will still like it - the community aspect even enhances the experience for some.

    Good video, as usual, very insightful.
    As a PC player I never played a Zelda game, old or new. But a few years ago I player some sort of tribute to this game for PS3 called 3D Dot Game Heroes. Yes, the name is awful, but have a look at the game, the gameplay is 100% classic and the voxels give it that touch of modern-retro indie game.
    And yes, I mentioned that I have a PS3, but I played a dozen titles, no more, I am still a PC gamer.

      If you have a decent computer you could emulate them all up to like, Twilight Princess, they all are amazing experiences (Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, A Link To The Past, Link's Awakening and Minish Cap being my personal favorites) you should give them a try!

      alejorag, thanks for the advice. I know I am missing many good classics, but as a matter of fact, there are more games to play than time to play them. I have to choose what I play, and I have about 100 games still untouched on my Steam account and my gog collection. Unfortunately I had to accept that there are some classics that I will never play.

      As a PC player myself, i dabbled into Nintendo products quite recently due to their systems actually being quite different from other consoles and their exclusives being kickass. If you have money to spare, i would recommend you to get a 3DS (it has Oracle games emulated, plus LBW and remakes of OOT and MM) or perhaps even Switch (i have enjoyed BotW so far, and i am no fan of open world games as a rule).

      The map showed the overworld but nothing was labeled. The manual had a wonderful beastiary of the enemies but you were still on your own to figure out what to kill them with.

      Nintendo power actually revealed the second quest you could do with a huge foldout overworked map back in the day BUT it was also labeled. Hints were given and labyrinths were revealed except the last 3 I believe. Good times 👍😎

    Excellent video. An Adventure game that gives you a sense of freedom instead of being force to go a certain route. This is the reason why the first Zelda is still my favorite. Simon's Quest and the originial Resident Evil also game me the same feeling.

      I'd say BotW is the closest thing to an OG Zelda 1 remake that I've seen so far. I got the same feeling playing that as I did the first time I played the original Zelda.

      Yea after two min i realised that he experianced this game in a way it was not intended. The reason there was only a small trext crawl and no detaled map was because of technical limitations. Every game prior to the mid 2000s came with a game manual. Most came with maps, clues, or hints on how to approach the game.

      Apparently he forgot and then rationalized the fact that the game did not give any indication as if it was the intent of the devs. He even points out that the NPCs' cryptic shitty tips are good design when they are shitty by tech limitations.

    Amazing Vid. This is the first Zelda game I've played and one of the first games I've ever completed.
