  • In this video I make a vase from an Ironwood, (hornbeam), log and experiment with two different colors of cactus juice stabilizing resin dyed with Alumilite dyes. I had no idea if this would work or not! I hope you enjoy seeing the process! Thank you for watching. Please leave a thumbs up and a comment, I respond to them all.
    Check out Zac Higgins of NV Woodwerks in the link below, most of this process is how he dye stabilizes burl.

    That was pretty cool. I really liked how it turned out. When I first saw you pouring in the dye without gloves I thought what an incredibly brave man you are. Whenever I bake red velvet cake (which calls for anywhere from 1 to 2 ounces of red dye) I always manage to get some of it on my hands. In retrospect I don't bother with gloves either. Makes for a little bit of fun if someone asks about it and you just give them a long silent stare. 😂

    Love to see some hornbeam. I get lots of it from my Mom's house. In Minnesota that piece you've got there is pretty big, this tree isn't a fast grower. I expect that the spots that didn't take the dye are nearly pure tree resin, since that is why its such a hard wood, and why it gets a sheen on it from sanding. At least that's what I think from my own experience. I've never turned it, I do green wood carving, and power carving if its seasoned. You make it look easy, that wood loves to show tool marks. I think your results were amazing, and especially neat to see the dye flow through it like that. I would think that one color would be neat too, or maybe one light and one dark color. This is way cool!

    Nice result, and I know you were just experimenting, but it’s worth reading up on the instructions for Cactus Juice on Curtis’s site (the maker). Your wood needs to be completely dry, as in 0%MC, not just woodturning dry for full penetration. I also only rough turn my work (ie leave it thicker) before stabilising, then finish turn it, that way it’s alway true

    • @TheKlondikeCraftsman
      @TheKlondikeCraftsman  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Dai, I dry to 0% when stabilizing to cast pieces but for the purposes of colouring I though I would give it a test as it was. I was content with the penetration but the heat from curing cactus juice did dry the blank enough to take it out of round so I will rough turn then dry nest test. Thanks for watching.

    • @daisensei69
      @daisensei69 3 роки тому +1

      @@TheKlondikeCraftsman you only need to dry to 0 for stabilising, but for casting only if you use Alumilite, with epoxy it’s not so critical

      Hey Jim, I have it in sealed containers and I’m unsure how long it lasts. It is in a 20 degree shop without light getting on it so here is hoping!

    great job sir and beauifull result. a question if i may.. (i guess i misunderstand that part), you mixed a cactus juice with resin?. what is the ratio and is there any other option but cactus juice? .

    • @TheKlondikeCraftsman
      @TheKlondikeCraftsman  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you Eran. The ratio is one ounce of Alumilite dye for 1/2 gallon of cactus juice. I’m not sure of other option as this was the first time I’ve dyed anything. Thank you for watching.

      Cactus Juice is a brand of wood stabilize r, it's not actually a juice extracted from a Cactus. Its a heat cured resin.

      Yes, I’ve never read what it is made of but I was quite sure it wasn’t actually cactus juice. It is amazing stuff just the same! Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!

    I've had all sorts of problems using a forstner bit into end grain - anything special I should know or maybe I'm just unlucky?
