I had some two-way JBL large bookshelf speakers in the early 80s in my dorm room and I absolutely loved them, but I shutter to think how they would measure or compare to today’s speakers but like you said you were into the music and that’s what mattered

I have found it very interesting as you have confirmed what I have long thought of JBL. Just as your earlier Klipsch series. Though at least the K's, like L100 series, had some hope. All this, and my son buying some LS50Meta, has me dragging my old rep sample RTR EXP-8V out. Drivers, surrounds, ... look good. Have not powered them up yet. RTR was known as a manufacturer of good drivers. especially their electrostatic panels. I had their ESR6 - 6 panel super tweeter arrays until the panels shorted out as they were known to do. The EXP-8V's back plate is a joke though. It has a circuit breaker for the tweeter! a cheesy variable resistor for tweeter level. And cheap push in terminals. It was one of the better speakers back in the day regardless. So wondered what magic you could perform if the drivers are working. But doubt it worth your effort as there are likely few left out there that others would buy the upgrade kit for. Though probably more than my Goodman Elite rep samples!
I worked at a studio that had a pair of these in the control room. I mixed a handful of records on these very monitors and.....the mixes always turned out great!
