The biggest French civil disaster of the 20th century

- PRESENTATION :
The rupture of the MALPASSET dam, a thin-walled arch dam 60 m high, caused 421 victims and 7,000 victims. After several days of torrential rain, the dam located on the Reyran, north of Fréjus, broke at 9:11 p.m. during its first filling (critical phase in the life of a dam). A blade of 50 million cubic meters of water rushes into the Reyran valley, devastating everything in its path. The city of Fréjus is submerged in a few minutes by a wave of water and mud 21 minutes later.
The consequences are dramatic. Fréjus is isolated and disorganized; roads, telephone, electricity, water are cut for several days. National 7 and the railway line were swept away for several hundred meters. The Reyran valley is "stripped" over 5 km; homes, farms and agricultural land are destroyed. A layer of mud 50 cm thick covers the districts of Reyran, Pavadou, Gare and Arènes.
Faced with the disaster and despite the confusion due to the lack of means of communication, relief and mutual aid are organized under the direction of the town hall.
Work to restore networks (communications, water, electricity, etc.) as well as communication channels has been undertaken. Road and rail traffic will be restored on December 10. The city will take months to regain a “normal face”. Temporary prefabricated housing is installed in the city to rehouse the victims.
Between state aid and donations from individuals following the disaster, the Town Hall of Fréjus redistributed more than 100 million Francs for the victims and for reconstruction.
The rupture is generated by an effect of underpressure due to the presence of a fault coupled with a rheological phenomenon of rock mechanics (variation of permeability according to the stress) unknown at the time of the construction of the dam. No fault has been established against the builders by the various jurisdictions.
The good quality of the vault and the concrete were recognized; the disaster is attributable to deficiencies in the foundations of the structure. This point underlines the importance of the geology, the orientation of the subsoil faults and the groundwater regime in the installation of a dam, but above all of the studies making it possible to identify the potential problems upstream in order to provide an answer during construction. As such, sufficient financial means must be gathered to carry out such a “safe” construction.
A “Permanent Technical Committee for Dams” has been created to study projects and monitor the execution of any structure over 20 m high.
New water resources are sought and the Reyran is channeled.

Thank you very much for your nice comment 🙏
Interesting to watch and ready your description. Foundation does seem critical. I could imagine all the water. Cheers my friend.
Yep it should be very horrible when it brake
Beautiful location, what detail of the frame and view. Interesting places and nature. Thank you for your video mate 🌱🎶👍💯
Your welcome my friend

Your right, very sad event, thanks for your visit 🤩
This was very interesting you have told this story very well with the drone good work my friend 👍
Thank you very much 🙏
Very good video my French friend beautiful location

All the best to my friend✌🙂🙏🏻Wonderful. I like it.
Interesting and sad the history of the dam, human error having consequences, Excellent flight friend, Greetings from Mexico.
Your right interesting spot, but very sad tragedy
Bonjour Laurent,
Vraiment impressionnant 😟
That's an interesting place with its story. Thanks for sharing this video with us
Thank you for your visit and comment 🙏
Nice to meet you. Bro. It's awesome. I've never seen it before, but it's very cool.
Thank you very much
Obviously it was a tragedy, but your excellent video really showed the location brilliantly 👍
Thank you very much 🥰
Increíble vídeo hermoso! 👍😍 ¡Respeto al autor! 🏆 ¡Gracias por compartir! 🤝
Your welcome, thanks for stopping by, and comment 🙏
Interessante....grazie per averlo postato.🦤
Uh, the video you made is really great, and the drone shots are amazing. But the background of this place is not so bright. We cannot imagine the devastation of not only the environment around the dam, but how many people suffered and lives were lost because of the mistake. Take care and have a great rest of the week. Sretana and Zac. 🖐😊🤗
Yes your right 421 people died and 7000 people have been injured
merci pour ce beau documentaire ❤
Avec plaisir 🙏
L18, great Flight over this area, Nice combination with ground Shoot 😎

Nice video 👍
Beautiful views 👍

Very interesting, very nice 🙂
Thank you mate
O.M.G... Terrible disaster costing lives. Hope this beautiful area normalises. Thanks for sharing this beautiful video with nice soundtrack. 🏞️😁👍✌️🎼🤗
Thank you very much my friend 🙏
Effectivement
great video ;)
Disaster 😳

Terrible and unbelievable. In Italy the biggest disaster was with the Vajont dam (about 2000 dead): the dam held up but part of the mountain (270 million cubic meters) fell into the lake, completely filling the lake with rocks and causing a huge tsunami with an air shock wave of twice the energy of the Hiroshima atomic bomb as calculated…
We must not forget these things both for those who have left us and so as not to repeat what happened in the past for the future 👍
Yes I was seeing a documentary on TV about your barrage in Italy, it was very much more dramatic, unfortunately we don't learn very quickly about our mistake
@@AirViewChannel It is also true because there is too much greed in human nature
