Yes this is a pretty timeless design. Simple and it works. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment I really appreciate that........Take care, Bluefin.
Excellent. Sometimes they are hard to find. I was looking of a while before I found mine. I have not seen them around very often lately. They are always available at IKEA But here in no IKEA stores in my province. Enjoy your new hobo stove....Take care, Bluefin.
Yes great way to lift it with them 1/2" conduit wall straps. You say the $1 store? I wonder if it is the same one as we have down here? It worked great. Blur Fin this was awesome and hey congrats on the win.
Brother I love mine...but one thing for sure...our Dollar Store here in Mississippi don't have them...at least not up until now...I had to order mine on line and it cost me about 12 bucks to get...that includes shipping...I know I got ripped off but it is worth every penny to me thus far...like I say it works well...and I would recommend it to everyone...Great video Brother!
Hi Mike! I have two of those that I was going to make into stoves but theyre still sittin on the shelf! Nice adding the feet, makes your idea upside down from mine, I like your idea of keeping it off the ground...Great job buddy! ...Merry Christmas! Tim
I glad you enjoyed this video. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Over eight years later this video is getting lots of views and the stove is still in use now and is holding up very well....take care, Bluefin.
I hope you find one. If you can't get one there, IKEA usually has them if you are near one and they are fairly inexpensive. There are two sizes tall or short. I prefer the short size and they are about $5 to $7 dollars each. I have made a few of these and I got some at the dollar store and one from IKEA. Both the same quality........Take care, Bluefin.
That's a great idea! It would work perfect for that. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I appreciate the support.....Take care, Bluefin.
Works well my friend. It may work nearly as well without the feet but I thought that it would leave less of an impact on the forest floor with the pot raised slightly.....Take care, Bluefin.
Yes it has been a while, I've been away at work. My uploads will be on a random schedule for now, every two weeks is too much to keep up with. They are dandy little stoves.....Take care, Bluefin.
Great but they are not needed when a campfire is possible. Bulky and extra weight to carry. There is no point, and it's harder to feed with fuel. I've been a hobo in the US, traveling thousands of miles on freight trains. I once spent three months sleeping out, sometimes with no shelter. I did carry a small gas cylinder with a tiny stove fitting for using in the box cars, but hardly used this.
You are indeed correct. Not needed but many people do like to use them. I tend to use this more often in winter in the snow. I place a large can lid or an aluminum pie plate under it so it doesn't sink in the snow. This is also good for a very small fire. Your story sounds both sad and interesting at the same time. Thanks for sharing your thoughts as we all have our own way of doing things and we can all learn from each other's views and life experiences......Take care, Bluefin.
Now is can part is that how it with all the holes in it and where is it found in the Dollar store and as for making the legs to keep it off the ground what else would be good for making legs from just looking for more ideas.
The can came with all the holes punched in it already. I drilled an extra 3 holes for the 3 legs I added. I've seen others just use 3 long bolts though the bottom holes as legs. The stove will work nearly as well with no legs but I would probably put a can lid or piece of metal under it to protect any grass of anything that may catch fire under the stove . I got this stainless steel kitchen utensil holder at Dollarama in Canada. IKEA also sells the same item.......Take care, Bluefin.
Thanks for watching and commenting. This was something I have seen others do in several different variations of what I did. It was a fun little project. Give it a try........Take care, Bluefin.
Thanks for watching, taking the time to comment and especially for subscribing. I have quite a few videos on my channel and I cover different topics, mostly hiking, camping and camp cooking, stoves, kayaking, scuba diving and winter activities. I hope you enjoy my content.....Take care, Bluefin.
That is nice so I need a 90 dollar drill and more hardware that is not available at the Dollar store to make a Dollar store Hobo stove. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
This is the way I chose to make it. There is no real need to drill extra holes. I could have just used the existing holes for the "legs" The 'legs" are not needed for the stove to work. I wanted to keep it off the ground. I could have just used the stove on the ground as is. News flash.... not everything at the "Dollar Store" is a dollar. This dollar store had all items at $4.00 or less at the time. Thanks for watching........Take care, Bluefin,
Nice job Fin,nice stove, you say dollar store? do you mean Dollarama? Also. @113 you were lighting something as Kiln to get your twigs/firewood lit. Was it Drier Lint you used to start the fire? ty great vid
I bought the at Dollarama here in Canada as a kitchen utensil holder. IKEA also sells them everywhere for about $4 to $7. Here is an IKEA Florida link: www.ikea.com/us/en/search/?q=utensil%20holder. I hope this helps you.....Take care, Bluefin.
This popped up after I got done watching your last video. I like your idea for the legs. I have a set to put on mine. I haven't used it yet. I guess I'll have to do a test fire in it. Maybe cook up one of the MH meal....... NAW! I aint THAT desperate! ;) What did you use to cut the slots in the aluminum?
I bought this at Dollarama in St. John's, Newfoundland several years ago. Apparently they don't stock them now. Ikea sells them fairly cheap and I believe Walmart stocks them. I hope you find one......Take care, Bluefin.
m all for innovation and repurposing in todays throw away society . Only concerns for this stove are the matel was not designed for high heat and wonder if it gives off any toxic fumes ? Also the metal fatigue caused by constant heating cooling of thin material, may eventually wear it out.
All valid concerns you have but this is how I addressed them. The container is all stainless steel. I washed it first to rid any potential oils from manufacture. After the first burn any potential fumes would be burned away. I only use it outside with lots of fresh air. I only cook on top of this stove using a pot or kettle. I don't cook food directly on it. I have used this "stove" numerous times for over eight years now and it is still holding up. If I needed to replace it , it is very inexpensive to do. I also have many other "real" camp stove that are wood burning and use these more often. Thanks for watching, commenting and voicing your concerns. I appreciate your input.....Take care, Bluefin.
