with the black trim means it's a glt model would have silver trim and cloth seats then it would be a gl
I have owned 3 Volvo 240 sedans... the first was a 92 that had 292k before it was totaled in a rainstorm... it was obliterated to the point Volvo called me to ask questions of the accident... the second was my roommate fell asleep while driving and hit a ditch at 260k... the third had 220k but my first child was coming so I sold my project cars to buy a nice safer car... the frame crumples easily in an accident very easily which is why they are known as the worlds safest car... I had plans to drive each one to 1 million miles
@@thesam19841 I've had 2 one the gearbox went in so I sold it as I diddnt know much about automatics then the second I sold just after my mum passed to pay of some debits first had 242 k miles second just under 300k miles loved both of them don't get me wrong other Volvo like 740 940 and 960 are nice but for me it's always been the 240.s I prefer a 2.0 none turbo my self everything don't have to be fast to be enjoyed
You going to save it?
That’s the point with these cars. Everything was so simple and frankly built with insane tolerances it just all doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter what you do it just runs.
A simple car built to highest of standards. I drove them through school for years with basically no money.
My family had 2 Volvos, a 1985 240DL gas wagon manual 5 speed and a 1983 240 Diesel 5 speed manual. Turns out the diesel one was a pretty rare config. The 1985 ran like a dream and we as a family put thousands of miles on it until the floors rusted out at 160k
Here in the south...no rust...my 98 Sentra 5 speed manual had no rust...it is my faily with 170k
It's really weird seeing old volvos being sold for so much in the US when In Finland and Sweden the same car wouldn't be worth over a thousand dollars
Kind of like how mustangs and challengers are dime a dozen in the US but nice expensive muscle cars in Europe.
@@37ClankThe old ones from 69-70ish sure, the new Mustangs are neither expensive nor are they considerd nice, a new Volvo cost about the same...
any car that runs is like 3,000, add some level of rarity to that and it can get pretty pricey
Yep, that is why I am waiting until I move to Sweden to buy one.
For a 240 that runs and is in ok condition you're looking at 2000-3000€. Then for a pristine 240 you're looking at 4000€ and upwards depending on trim level, modifications, etc.
I had one and it rusted out at 455k. I got it with 230k. All I did was basic maintenance and replaced the timing components and the alternator. Didn’t burn a drop of oil, just a small power steering leak
Edit:it was an 86 240
incredible, bet it would still be going if it wasn’t for the rust!
So reliable, still see these in the roads and highways to this day.
I Love 2, 7 and 900 series Volvos. Great cars!
They are some of the finest engineered cars in the world.
...Were
One of the most amazing cars ever built
Want. These were everywhere when I was a kid.
Makes me think of the movie Houseguest with Phil Hartman & sinbad.
If this car was around my area i would buy it immediatly 😮
My future dream vehicle
These are worth a fair amount these days. Thankfully, that means they usually are being cared for well.
I don’t think it will have any trouble finding a new home, even with the sideswipe from a truck on the doors.
My dad got all excited and wanted me to buy a 2 door 240 with over 200,000 miles for college. I bought a celica instead, and he bought the 240 for himself. 😂 The 240 did develop some issues. The celica was the more reliable car but the 240 was much older and higher milage (and cheaper).
We considered buying one in '83 but the console was too much in the way of my right leg. Plus I wanted a front wheel drive car. We bought an '83 Saab 900 instead.
Our dealer had a 240 sedan that they loaned out. I was surprised at how slow it was after driving my 900 and the 900 without a turbo wasn't that fast either.
Almost bought a couple Volvos in subsequent years, but never did. I'm glad that Volvo survives to this day!
It's will be the best grocery getter
The king of queens car.
Tanks,good derby car.
A lot of people claim new cars last longer than old cars. "Hah" I say, and think of the 240's and the P1800s.
In europe that gen of volvo called ''tank''
Mine had a good drivetrain but it always seemed to have electrical gremlins.
A LS swapped wagon running around my area and it looks stock with the hoodup 😅😅😅😅
driving a 940 still lol. nearing 300k
Those are million miles cars👍
The strongest Swedish tank
Ive been on the hunt for one i want to lower one and 350 swap it
I wonder what the other car from that crash looks like. I mean if you can call that a car after crashing with a volvo
Best ever had four
Hell yeah❤
🗣
Yup indestructible….. except for brake calipers interior seats and dash components, rot around wheel wells and front sub frame, ball joint, transmission seals, sun roof, exhaust components, and oh ya 0 to 60 in 3.5 days!! And don’t for get to avoid hills. But if a train t bones you you’ll be good.
I’d keep it if I were you
I bought a 240 dlo. O stand's for Overdrive manual transmission. I had a very emotional connection with it. It was a 1984 hit in the right rear. I traded it with 218000,+ miles. I had tears in my eyes when u watched it roll away to be auctioned off
what a gem, hard to find over here in a manual. sorry for your loss but glad you got to enjoy it before it got hit
Why did you sold it if I may ask?
@@julianstechsation it got crashed
I bawled like I'd lost a loved one when I lost my 88 745 wagon...319k on the odo when the axle fell apart. I became a member of the high milage club and the Volvo Saved my Life club. Still my favorite car I've ever owned to this very day.
I worked for a Volvo dealer in Scotland back in the 1980’s. These vehicles were at the time bomb proof, high quality and driven by professional people who appreciated their understated simplicity. They were everywhere in S/W Scotland because of a good dealer that no longer exists. Forty years on and there is not a single running example on the roads of this area which is very sad.
I've been going on the Isle of Seil for the past few years and 2 years ago there was abandoned house on the isle with an old 240DL, all surrounded by brambles and nettles. Sad to see, hope more people try and keep these cars on the roads in the UK.
Road tax
Wet climates and old cars don’t mix. Volvo 240s and Mercedes W123s etc would still make sense in a dry climate as an everyday driver. Not in rain sodden Scotland or Ireland. Rust is a their enemy.
@@DreynoNorway is full of them. Wetter and colder and more salt. Clever people, the Norwegians....
@@ulfosterberg9116 What clever things do they do?
I currently drive an 87 Volvo 240. Ragnar is my baby! Reliable, convenient, and sometimes turns heads! Ultimate hippie wagon!
I had an old volvo with a Swedish name too! that's so cool man! mine was an 05 s40 t5
Raggi kallinn er með þetta
I really love these auction shorts, the calm spoken tone, the chill music in the background, everything about them is relaxing in some sort of way 👌👌
💙💙
I can confirm that these things run for a real long time with the proper care and maintenance, there was a girl in are town that used to drive one of these. It was her mom's first car and passed it down to her daughter she drove it for another 6-7 years.
Missed these videos bro where u been 😢 😭
busy building a K series 😢
@bendaga respect bro handle ya business and God bless ya 🙏
I had a 940 with the same engine. It did not care about winter weather one bit. As long as the battery was good, that engine started every time after a couple revolutions at most. It also drove very well in deep snow and has saved our butts from getting stuck in the middle of nowhere more than once.
I had one. Best band and equipment transport ever. And my Dad didn't object to it, as he banned hearses in the driveway. Easier on gas and nearly indestructable
First one I had was destroyed by a roady who drove it into the Atlantic off the coast of Ft. Lauderdale. My last one was totalled by a drunken ex. Dead volvo wagon broke my heart. Still don't miss that ex.
I am assuming the ex became the exec as a result of that terrible car sin?
@@JJfromPhilly67 The finalé with that ex was a realization we had over 20+ years to be a team, and failed. That worthy car was some of the collateral damage. Sometimes we have to realize we can't be the only one of two trying. I survived. That is all I accomplished from that endeavor. Becoming/being an adult can be difficult, but required in the real world. And it was the only sane decision for survival of both of us.
From my experience, being with the wrong person is far lonelier than living alone.
My friend had one in high school in 1998 was a used model with 398,000 miles
I bought one and idk how but mine is the most unreliable shitbox I’ve ever owned. It’s a struggle because I like the car so much but it’s caused me unyielding pain
My buddy and his brother own Volvo dealerships. They had the coolest 242s in highschool. A Bertone 242 with a 5.0 swap. And a track ready tuned turbo 242.. They taught me how to drive stick in a 740 turbo wagon. I had a 850 glt in highschool, and a 850 turbo right after. Great cars.
Wish I could find one of these but they're like a damn unicorn these days
for real...they were still a pretty common sight up to the mid-2000s, but cash for clunkers probably got some of them 😭 and well, even though super reliable, nothing lasts forever. all good things come to an end. 😟
They're $15,000 unicorns these days.
That light sideswipe for that square swedish tank, was a total destruction for the front end of the other car 😂😂😂
Autocar Magazine in the UK used to sumarise each car with a 'For' and 'Against'.
These Volvos: For=Everlasting; Against=Everlasting
the 940T is my fav red block turbo BRICKS!!!!!!!!!
Same here, currently about 200 horsepower but going for 300 horsepower for next summer. Then for summer 2026 going for 500 horsepower with H-beam connecting rods, Holset HX40 Super turbo, programmable ECU and ZF transmission.
The Swedish Brick.
When I was a young kid. The local doctor used to drive around in one of these model Volvo. He was a phucken terrible driver. He was Chinese and he wore big Coke bottle glasses.
I had one of these and a 740. I enjoyed them for what they were. Always wanted a 240 GLT. Never found one in my price range that was worth it. I wanted to throw a Chevy V8 and a 5 speed.
I’m alive today after getting T-bone dead center my door in a 1983 four-door Volvo. The driver that hit me with 23 feet of skidmarks with 3 tires.
Volvo owner here! 20 years together!
Still runs absolutely fine!
Black Volvo V50 2.0d 136 HP.
Lovely! ❤
Difference between this Volvo 240 and a German tank?
About 5 pounds !!! 😅
The Volvo 240 is a great car and a fraction of the price of a very similar Mercedes w123
I had a 81dl, knocked down a telephone with it. It was totaled but held up surprisingly well
Nothing like Swedish metal
That's amazing I have one too! Love it
I like the sedans better. But yes👍
Where these diesels VW engines?
I do believe so. In-line 5 or 6 -cylinders.
Tank ❤
My Aunt has one of these. It's been beat over the years but still runs and drives and her and my uncle raised the entire family in it. That thing still running till this day after 20 years of her owning it and it has about 400k on the clock. However, it's showing its age at this point but she doesn't want to let it go.
My first car was a red 1989 245 stationwagon. It had lived a rough life, and was In a pretty sad state., but the engine and drivetrain worked perfectly fine, even though it had about 600000km on it. Unfortunately the rust kills them. Everything else on them is built to last forever. It's my favorite car I've owned! Sadly I checked the registration up this year and it had sadly been scrapped last year...
The 240, 740 and 940 are indestructible. Especially the naturally aspirated ones
These have fixed caliper disc brakes all around, too. You'd be pressed to get that on even an expensive car today, forget about 1980. These were so good they still made them new even after the replacement came out 20 years later.
Over the course of 20 years, I've had 15. The highest mileage (and one of the cleanest ones i had) was 680k
🇸🇪🇸🇪love Volvo’s 😎. I’m a Swede, and I live nearby Gothenburg where Volvo are built. They are indestructible!
You could easily drive them up to 500.000km/ if you do regular maintenance. 🤘🤘🇸🇪😎
I had an 89, it was JUNK .. Blow by, PCV valve clogging, mass airflow sensor issues, electrical issues AC compressor, trim fell off, don't believe the hype.
I’ve had 3 940s. And all of them have been driven over 500000km:)
My dad bought 244 GLE in 1980. I was 8yrs old. My daughter was probably conceived in the back seat of that car. Shes 23 now😂
I remember those tractor engines heaving to life. Reliable yes. Smooth? No. Old and hard to find parts for.
Take her home, fix her up, and drive her! Why is she sitting in a graveyard?
Save
I want one. They are perhaps one of the most ugly cars ever built, but I don't care. Old Volvo cars are weird, ugly, and reliable as f**k. Kinda like me.
Volvo... One of the Most indestructable Cars ive ever Seen. I saw some randoms Messing with the Motor Testing this Car without oil or Putting Something into IT and guess what IT Drives Like nothing
Per a former Volvo mechanic, the bodies of the cars are sent through a chemical bath to make them resistant to rust before being painted. If you ever see rust on a Volvo it is because said panel was replaced due to a crash or other incident that caused it to need replacing.
Nope the most indestructible vehicle would be like a Hyundai car from 2017 that burns oil like no other, come on where is the award...
Built back when cars were cars, not laptops and marketing gimmick's
Certainly not a modern Volvo
And by that I mean I would buy a Volvo of this era but I wouldn't buy a new one
All Volvo 2.4 petrol engines are amazing. Also Saab 2.0i or turbo petrol. Just way faster than a Volvo.
That Volvo was actually T-boned by a moving train. It was dragged down the tracks for over a mile before the conductor got the train stopped. Those scratches down the drivers side are the only damage from the accident.
I'm thinking you should buy it haha
The “it’s so clean on the inside” comment always kills me. As if even the poopiest car on the outside can’t be cleaned with an hour or two of internal cleaning 🤣
I've had over 40 Volvo 240s in my driving career. Sadly parts are finally getting hard to find, especially the plastic stuff.
Also you used to be able to buy them for $500-1500 for years and years, now they're like $6k+ for halfway decent examples.
Yes and look at volvo now driving people off multistorey car parks and setting fire
145k? Yeah that’s funny. That thing already rolled over twice.
that generation was awesome...but the next generations were junk...bad junk !!!
I love this car, but I wonder if the first gen honda prelude was more reliable.
When they tested out the RED block 240 engine.
They had the motor running CONSTANTLY for an equal of 4 Laps Around the WORLD. 160.000 Kilometers give or take :)
my dad purchased a 1986 340GL during our stay in the UK, twenty years later we had to sell it. it was like magic but definitely not for middle east weather
I had a 1985 Volvo that f....r had 56780000 miles weird # I know
Ram raiders favourite car in the UK, V.rare now in the UK...best Volvo the ever made, used a 2.3 litre Renault engine.
black leather seats are hard to come by in Sweden, even complete black interior. you can get parts everywhere but finding a complete set is more or less impossible and the price tag on a complete set is very almost extremely high 🙃
WAY more 240Ds still on the road than those. Sorry.
💯
Are the new volvos somewhat reliable?
I had a 1978 Volvo 260 station wagon it was a piece of crap. I remember driving down the road in the drive shaft broke..👎👎👎
The past owner definitely took good care of this beauty
Early generation Toyota pickups/hilux were much more reliable... you didn't even need to maintenance them.
That Volvo is as close to a tank as it might be. And the sheer size of the baggage compartment - it is huge....
I saw a Volvo 240 with more than 1 million miles....
And actually, it's the previous generation with exposed steel bumpers that are known for their reliability.
It's nice to know that a car mfg besides Japanese have figured out durability, reliability & longevity. Volvo has a GR8 history & makes some dandy heavy equipment vehicles too. 😎🏆
Had one, complete rustbucket and very unreliable......
But the turbo cars are more fun and you can get more power very easy with them
