Sebastian, I would love to see side by side through the lens of this with Big Screen Beyond to compare. Also the most important factor for many people including myself is FOV. When are we going to have bigger FOV. Didn't you see this advancing at tech expos? And a wireless adapter for it?
Still in doubt. If they would follow your advice to drop that extra audio upgrade on $799 version - yes. If they would make no-local dimming and no-controllers option - probably yes. Otherwise I will stick to my $250 Reverb G2 with Pico4 lenses until Pimax super-models later this year. If OLED will be blurry when in motion, I will get LD LCD version.
Hey @mixedrealityTV - for true decision, we need a review with dimming on and off (in best and worst conditions). Also, how much local dimming zones are there in Crystal, Crystal Light and upcoming super models. Thank you in advance.
Agreed. I'd love to get a Metroid Prime remake on the quality level that Alyx got for one game on my list. If they could do StarWars: Tie Fighter from the 1990s upgraded to todays graphics without screwing with it, that'd be something I'd love to play also.
Rather than photorealism, I think it's more like the basically "retina" resolution that's blowing you away here. The visuals in these games can certainly get more realistic in many areas, but I'm sure the resolution is now getting to a point where it's pretty close to your real eyes.
@@aprile1710 Calculating from old marketing, the "retina display" branding worked out to about 52-63 pixels per degree, and Pimax Crystal Super is marketed as 50-57 pixels per degree (probably QLED vs Micro-OLED), so it's absolutely getting there. Crystal and Crystal Light are down in the 35 ppd range, but have clearer and wider optics than many other headsets. That said, this is MRTV in full hype mode, and it's hard to judge these things from footage, as there's not much frame of reference for the field of view covered, and that's probably smaller than normal vision just to get the camera resolution meaningful.
Respectfully disagree. Depends what we mean “close”. Even a 4k screen isn’t “retina” resolution and this isn’t 4k. Even 8k isn’t like that. And that’s viewing distance of a screen. In VR you need 5kx5k to get the perception of a normal 4k television at viewing distance. Certainly not photo realistic. Extremely good, much better than the competition, but let’s see what the Super will be able to do. Or the 12K if ever arrives. (Retinal resolution would be 15kx15k if it’s a VR lens..)
@@Reptile1971 Yeah, it's not actually the level that could truly be called "retina", but I think what he's saying is that it's reached a point where it's so good that you likely wouldn't be able to tell much of a difference even when the resolution increases. I mean, it will, but nothing too major from now on when it comes to perceptible resolution really, I would guess.

Pimax has made the Light available for purchase for those who pre-ordered as of today without seemingly having offered review headsets to reviewers. The customer has 3 days to blindly purchase the new headset or lose their opportunity.
Nope, I dont have the unit yet. But should happen really soon. It's the Crystal that we know in lighter without the stuff we didn't like. I say go for it.
impressive resolution and clarity but this is all the more reason to wait for the quest3 pro or quest pro2. which i am sure will release sooner than you might think. can't beat wireless small headsets. pimax is too big and wired.
I can understand you. But what Quest won't give you is the uncompressed Displayport visuals that you get here. So if you want the best visuals now this is a great choice.
We have made TONS of photorealistic samples. Photorealism is not made by the lens... It's all about lighting style and materials. Not the display... I was going to tell you about G2 and you said it yourself.
I guess to run any game in 2880x2880 per eye with some high settings in game we would need Intel 15th gen and RTX5090, right? (edit on Pimax Light without eye tracking). How this could get any sharper? I guess when Quest 4 is out, we'd all find out. My bet is, Quest 4 is going to be with pancakes and edge to edge clarity, Display Port, and some 3000x3000px per eye for some $600. Maybe with eye tracking for $800. They have budget to take over this part of the market. I like that you always look for good and bad in your videos, thank you for it.
You will need AMD 9000 with x3d and quest 4 with Displayport would be awesome, but honestly who's still using a cable with the quest? AV 1 encoding is already available with quest 3.
Nope. One of the neat things about high resolution headsets is they can just give a more accurate view of whatever rendering resolution you're using. Look back at some PC VR discussions and you'll note they talk about oversampling a lot; that's using higher rendering resolutions than the display can handle. 2880x2880 is no more pixels than the 3840x2160 I've had for years in the 8K X.
I'm happy with my Quest 3, looking forward to using the PC display port and wider FOV and give the Quest a break. I mostly play American Truck Simulator everyday on top of standalone games.

@@mixedrealityTV would you say the distortions are on par with meta headsets? I ask because if for example the quest3 had the same edge to edge clarity it has but with peripheral barrel distortion I would rather prefer the original quest2 image. in the same way I returned the G2 and got a quest2 because the sharp transition from clarity to blurriness of the g2 was way too disturbing to be enjoyable
So Sebastian, have been looking for an upgrade to the G2 for a while and was considering getting the Index (just to have that classic piece of hardware, there’s a guy selling some here down under at a reasonable price) and also getting the Beyond to use as the headset! The overall price of this endeavour has been a deterrent. The whole battery affair of the Crystal, the form factor, and criticisms of the software kept me from considering Pimax, but this light version at this price has won me over. I’m in! I’ve got a 3080, perhaps it’s time for a 4080 to pair nicely with the Crystal Light. Seb, would you say there will be a noticeable benefit in upgrading the card?
I have not published it because it is so much more difficult to record a good through-the-lense video with it. My results differ so much from when you wear the device that I decided not to publish them.
@@mixedrealityTVHey Seb, got my girlfriend to try VR for her first time, did the whole First Steps thing and then showed her some ‘nature videos’ for women. I cast to my phone (was using original quest which I bought way back when you recommended) and I acted out what the ‘animals’ were doing. What can I say, I’m a beast? Oh yeah!
I have to admit it looks great and I’m tempted to buy one, BUT… I remember your video with the Reverb G2 in which you stated edge-to-edge clarity, however in practice the sweet spot of the G2 (for me) is very small, e.g. way smaller than the Index has. Not sure how that is possible, but this makes me doubt how trustworthy this through the lens video is. And it’s not that I accuse you of false videos or something, I’m just saying there is a difference between these videos and looking through the lenses yourself. I will have to see if I can somehow try one out before ordering one.
Yeah it depends on how close your eyes get to the lenses, that was the problem with the G2. Many people with could not get close enough. For the Crystal, you can get extremly close and you have clear glass lenses, so you will even have less of a problem with sweetspot. Glad that you are watching my content for such a long time.

What other new headset coming out this year? Pimax is only one with realistic price. Varjo and Somnium headset is not consumer price so its a garbage product for us
Just watch my previous video, it is about buying the Bigscreen Beyond. If more companies would be releasing other headsets, I'd be all over them, too. This is a VR Enthusiast channel and that device is just the most interesting at the moment. Also, I talk about the negatives of the headset as well.
@@mixedrealityTV I miss your "reviewer" style videos, where you focus more on the technical aspects such as FOV, binocular overlap, focal distance, colors, DFR/FFR, software stack, distortions, weight, ease of use, etc. less about impressions and wows. @@x32i77 Well that's good to know. Thank you for the info. I like my 8K X and don't see any reason to consider the Crystal, but the 12K is another matter.
If it's anything like the original crystal preorder, Pimax will contact you via email when it's your turn with a link to their website to complete the order and make the payment. Then your crystal light will ship out within the next few weeks. With the original crystal there were problems getting the glass lenses produced and they had to delay some people up to a couple months. They typically ship with Fedex so if you have an account set up to monitor incoming packages you can see when it actually ships out typically before they notify you (some never even got a shipping notification email). Also don't get too excited by a shipping label being created, they do that early on and it might not ship for another few weeks. In some cases, if it takes long enough they'll create multiple shipping labels and only ship one.
MRTV, do you know if Pimax is going to embrace the open-invitation of Meta's OS? I think they should. I will never buy another Pimax headset (UNLESSS they are connected to Meta's OS). I love Pimax. I just don't have any faith in their ability to deliver what they say. So, just make the best headset and place it in the Metaverse.
REALLY looking forward to how Unreal Engine 5.3+ games will look with this. I'm glad a company is still working on high-end PCVR only stuff. Honestly, imo, standalone VR is a waste of time and money and it's annoying that Facebook keeps distorting the market by trying to force it with their billions of dollars. The *whole point* of VR is to have a realistic virtual world to visit, and that means full immersion with visuals a standalone headset can't match. I DO wish that some company that makes VR treadmills like Omni One would come up with a way to integrate a PC case into the rotating treadmill that would turn with it, so that we could have full unbounded 3D degrees of movement with a wired headset without the twisting cord problem, since wireless just lacks the bandwidth for super high fidelity visuals for photorealistic VR.

Nope, I dont have the unit yet. But should happen really soon. It's the Crystal that we know in lighter without the stuff we didn't like. I say go for it.
why the software pimax is very bad??
@mixedrealityTV what is that dark horizontal stripe over the whole screen? Is this a camera issue or the headset issue?
Camera issue.
impressive resolution and clarity but this is all the more reason to wait for the quest3 pro or quest pro2. which i am sure will release sooner than you might think. can't beat wireless small headsets. pimax is too big and wired.
I can understand you. But what Quest won't give you is the uncompressed Displayport visuals that you get here. So if you want the best visuals now this is a great choice.
@@mixedrealityTV not for long look up linus tech tips thunderbolt share video.
i am already getting one only because of MRTV reviews, but i also blame you if no good
Haha, sie you can! But I did tell you about the negatives too! Make some videos on your channel once you get it!
I have already the current Crystal model and It is a great headset for sure. I own also valve Index, quest 3 and varjo Aero
What are your PC specs?
We have made TONS of photorealistic samples. Photorealism is not made by the lens... It's all about lighting style and materials. Not the display... I was going to tell you about G2 and you said it yourself.
Pimax crystal lite or big screen beyond?
That's what I'm asking
Almost every review of Big screen talks about glare. Glare is a deal breaker for me.😢
Yeah, the Crystal has a better image and no glare.
For best visuals choose Crystal, for best form factor, best blacks choose Beyond.
@@0LoneTech 2880 per eye, so it's 5760x2880px, I guess.
@@Marcin79W I was talking about per eye already. I have the 8K X, not the 4K.
I'm happy with my Quest 3, looking forward to using the PC display port and wider FOV and give the Quest a break. I mostly play American Truck Simulator everyday on top of standalone games.
Since a time until now...i feel this channel become a seller channel or is just my imagination..?? specialy with pimax....
Go watch my video about their wide FOV lenses or their portal VR. Or my previous video about buying the Bigscreen Beyond instead. You are not watching enough mrtv, that's the problem! :) but anyways, if a headset is great value I am not shy to let you know. You should be grateful that there is an enthusiast like me who will not only tell you how great your Meta Quest is.
I follow your channel since long time ago.. That's way my personal comment... And... I have a G2... Now also you want to be a fortune teller 😉.
You have a great channel but sorry... Is not me... Is the way from a time a go you decided to take.... I hope my comment just help to you to remember the beginning of your channel. Good luck 👍🙂
I would love to have this but no money for this 🤧
And hi
Quest 3 is also good 🙂👍

What is the FOV?
104h/104v
Somnium vr1 120-135h fov and 100-105 vertical fov
edge to edge clarity? what about the disturbing peripheral barrel distortion some people report?
It's not there if you are in the sweetspot. That is what I meant when I talked about geometric distortions. Edge to Edge clarity is good.
Hooooollyyy moooly I need this now!
Is this similar to the non local dimming version?
No idea, never saw it.
how are the controllers? Do they come with any?
The controllers are fine. Very similar to Quest controllers.
I won't buy one, but I'm sure those who buy it will have a great vision. Looks great.
YES! Especially with the Crystal you will love the 4080! Go for it!
amazing yeah... Have you done a similar through the lens with BigscreenBeyond?
I have not published it because it is so much more difficult to record a good through-the-lense video with it. My results differ so much from when you wear the device that I decided not to publish them.
I wonder what this will be used for!
Adult entertainment.
Oh yeah!

If a person just wants pcvr for flight sims, DO I even need controllers?
No you don't really need them. There is a version without controllers for 799 incl. local dimming.
@@mixedrealityTV Thanks! That's good to hear, the PCL remains an interesting headset for me then. I'm a VR fan of the first hour and of course I'll keep watching your video's ;)
What demo is this?
This is a whole game! It's called Half-Life Alyx.
@MRTV - mixedrealityTV, does it work with the Valve Index controllers? I still own a Pimax 5K XR that came with Index controllers and 2 lighthouses; I do not want to spend extra if I don't have to. Also, should I wait for the 12K?
Yes it works with Vslve Index controllers if you go for the Lighthouse version for 899.
I am also still on Pimax XR , will be upgrading to vr1 from somnium because of the much bigger fov
Impressive…
It is!
Too bad I MUST buy the Robosen transforming Megatron, otherwise it would be this or big screen beyond as a toy. Ok next toy will be one of those. ; )
The Megatron is pretty cool though. I get you.
Robosen transforming Megatron? I knew of the Optimus, I’m gonna have to check it out…
I'm so excited about getting the Crystal light I could crush a grape 🍇
My wife is mad at me for spending the money, so she is sour grapes
Looks like this is a Pimax sales channel now.
For example, what is the state of PimaxXR support now that the lead developer walked away? What is the production capacity at Pimax? What are the delivery wait times? Pimax motion smoothing still has issues with many games, including DCS. I know these take time and effort, but I would rather wait for these than get clips that have a marketing feel to them.
@@Danielle-s5q Once I have final units, I can give you a full review. You are mistaking my enthusiasm for the tech with marketing feel. I am truly excited about the upcoming device and I am not shy to express it. That has always been my style. I am not hiding any disadvantages either and showing alternatives. So no worries, simply enjoy the show ;)
The Crystal Light will be bulky but supposedly lighter that a Quest 2 or 3 with battery straps... will it be suitable for room scale vr? comfortable enough? what do you think guys?
The Crystal Light will be the same weight as the Valve Index. And nobody thinks the Valve Index isn't suitable for room scale.

Yes, happy gaming!
I just can't get why this 2800 looks so much sharper then 2200 of Pico 4 as example. 25% higher gives such an extreme difference!
Because it's not just 25% higher. 2880x2880=8.3M vs 2200x2200=4.8M.
@@SargonDragon got it, thanks
The pixels per degree (ppd) is notably higher in the crystal (35 ppd) vs. pico 4 (20.76 ppd).
That plus good optics (lenses) can make a big difference.
Everything that the others said and this is wired Displayport visuals, you don't get that compressed image that you get with Pico and Quest.

How does it compare to the varjo aero in terms of visuals ?
In the distance less sharpness but much bigger fov , better colors , better blacks
@@x32i77 Thx. Does the Crystal also have the typical Varjo bug where things are blurry whenever moving your head but sharp when holding still ?

@3:50 they are called "Beer taps"
Thank you! I like them!
What is the process for payment on the12th?
Yep that should be it.
Awesome!
Yeah!
Btw which game it is ?
It's Half-Life Alyx
@@mixedrealityTV This game is so good
Big screen beyond? Better?
no
My last video is about that question. It has a better form factor, better blacks but worse lenses.
That's amazing
Yeah!
