  • El Nino really hammered the coast in Pacifica, California and as a result, many homes were lost due to the cliff erosion. 20 apartments were demolished and 1 home was relocated 25 feet inland from the cliff.
    This video shows what the affected area looks like now.

    This reminds me of a developing situation in Pacific City Oregon, where right next to a very sandy hill, a sand dune actually, sits a 4000 sq ft house right on top of another sand dune. Hmmmmm

    I like how in the first picture there is a bit of grass on an unstable cliff in the foreground, then in the 'today' picture, you see they built on that cliff and now it's falling into the sea - and no-one saw that coming???

      They didn't build there - the "today" and "1997" shots are of different areas on the coast, about a hundred yards apart. Use the "Y"-shaped building at the left of the "1997" shot to orient yourself as the video plays, you can see it clearly.

    In 1997, it looked like they had a good 50 feet of space between the back porches and the cliff's edge. There was a lot more than just El Niño at work during those 19 years. Cliffs on the seaside erode faster if they're made of sand and dirt. I'd think that they'd either figure out a way to further stabilize that cliff face, or just not build there at all (leaving the space as a park). Human hubris, I fear...

      Look at that again. There are no buildings between the road and the cliff in the 1997 photo. they built all those buildings on the cliff side of the road after that photo in 1997.

    Great video, but the "music" was unbearable. It sounds like a blaring fog horn or emergency signal. Not good.

    lol I like that one house was relocated 25 feet further inland, 25 feet is not near enough as the they need to be more like 1/2 mile. one good storm and the 25 feet is gone.

      Pacifica made national news with this story. Nice to see what the outcome has become. And I'm sure when there's more activity, you'll be right on it! ;)

    I don't know if this is just sloppy journalism, or flat-out dishonest reporting. Those are clearly different parts of the coastline.
    Start with the 1997 shot at 0:13 - note the "Y"-shaped building on the left, and the narrow space between it and the cliff. See that there are two rows of buildings in the center (the row closest to the ocean has nine buildings) with a parking lot and then a highway behind them.
    Now, the "today" shot at 0:17. A much longer apartment building is shown, not the shorter buildings from the 1997 shot. And at 0:18 just before the shot cuts away, note the building on the left and its porch style - these don't match the building to the left of the 1997 shot's buildings.
    Back up to 0:11. You can see the remnants of a retaining wall at the right, before the shot pans left. The buildings here match the "today" shot, and the buildings visible at the left after the pan seem to match the one seen at 0:18.
    Jump forward to 0:30. The buildings to the left are clearly the ones from the left of the initial pan and the "today" shot, so this is the same section. Apparently two coastal buildings were torn down between those shots and this one, and the pads leveled. In the distance you can see the "Y"-shaped building, and as it scans closer you see the two rows of buildings (nine in front), parking lot and highway. And at 0:33 if you look down between the two building pads you can see the retaining wall from the initial shot; it's easier to see if you skip ahead to 0:42.
    Now compare the shots at 0:15 and 1:23. You can see there has been significant erosion to the coast on the right in places, maybe up to 10-20 feet in one section. But I guess that wasn't dramatic enough.

    We used to live at 380 Esplanade in the mid-90s. Back then I recall a couple of houses just south of us going into the water.

    The comparison shot showing that grassy area is NOT 320 Esplanade Avenue, which is one of the 2 condemned buildings that are next to the walkway down to the beach.
    There was never a street between the water and those 2 buildings. But thanks for playin’. 😏

    I call BS on the 1997 shot. It looks like those apartments/condos on the edge of the cliff hadn't even been build yet. If they have been built they aren't in the 1997 shot.

    • @JaysonOertel
      @JaysonOertel  8 років тому

      +Clearanceman2 well, I think the cliff extended 50 plus feet from the edge of the apartments back then. It eroded over the course of 19 years.

    • @Clearanceman2
      @Clearanceman2 8 років тому +1

      I went back and looked at the shot and I think it's from another part of the cliffs. It's a shot from 1997 but not where the apartment buildings are or it's a shot from before they were built in the first place.
      I see they've removed two apartment buildings now. Maybe the third by now, the latest video showed two gone. But clearly someone didn't do their homework before building on those cliffs.

    Somewhat slanted reporting. At 0:14, that view is pretty much the same now as it was in 1997. At 0:17, those apartments are 1,000 ft north of the first view. Those apartments were already close to the cliff edge when they were built (at least in a 1993 historical photo). Yes, there is erosion occurring. Can't deny that. It's the natural process of the ocean/land interface. But it wasn't considered when those apartments were built (and the city approved the building permit). The builders saw a profit; the city saw the higher property tax on the improved land. Now it's time to pay all that back. An the tax payers are probably paying some of that bill.
