- This early 1950s film provides a fascinating tour of the WHIRLWIND I computer facilities at MIT, illustrating daily routines, problem-shooting and step-by-step procedures that computer programmers and other users go through at the research center. Henry Kolm and Robert C. Merton make appearances. Sponsored by the Office of Naval Research.
That "physicist" is my Dad who was a professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT and two other universities during his career. The movie was completed in July 1954. I have the MIT memo announcing its availability. My mother is the redhead in the paper tape room and one of the first female computer programmers. They married in September 1954. Both of them are gone now but I still love watching this movie!

As an employee of MIT for almost thirty years, I love this channel and it’s content. I especially enjoy trying to identify the department buildings and their locations, if they still exist.
I am fascinated at those things.I want to live this counrty just for these reasons.

According to wikipedia Core wasn't added until 1953. As a core plane is shown early in the film, I suspect it was made 1953 or 54

what would these people think if they knew that in 2020, our computers would spend 90% of their time completely idle and another 9% showing us advertisements, and programmers would type their programs directly on the computer and the computer would check them for mistakes?
And the 90% of the 10% non-idle time would be spent processing cat videos, spreading false information for manipulating all of us and last but not least, the basics of twerking.
Wow! I really want to see them live. I had something about computers in me (like a fascination) and its revived again. 😄. Lucky those, who gets the opportunity to see, work, and learn about them live.

The year of the film appears to be 1953. At 18:54 it shows a July 1953 calendar, and at 18:58 there are other calendar day images with the year 1953. However, this is inconsistent with other footage which depicts Fall weather when the doctor is parking their car. The film also shows magnetic core memory, which was demonstrated in August 1953 (www.computerhistory.org/storageengine/whirlwind-computer-debuts-core-memory/). The clothing worn by people in the film also appears too heavy for summer in Cambridge, but would be consistent with Fall weather. So, best guess is filming occurred in Fall 1953.

@@BigDaddy-yp4mi A historian looking at this film would want to know when it was shot. I was providing a rationale for a specific date, in hopes that other historians would find it useful, or have additional information which would point to a different date.
In the "example", I wonder why they didn't feed the output to a teletype instead of taking pictures of an oscilloscope. Dramatics, I guess.

One cannot but marvel at what human mind is capable of thinking then creating the world which got created around us, whether conscience or well, yes, destruction also, nevertheless everybody is finally coming to conclusion it’s better to be on good trade bussiness zones with each other then wars. Hopefully further social civil discipline shall develop further to contain certain conditions allowed to go on
