Are YOU Making These HUGE Fish Keeping Mistakes (And Don’t Even Know It?)
Вставка

- You might not even know you’re making some of these MISTAKES in fish keeping. I'm guilty of a few of these MISTAKES! Watch and see if you are as well -- and work on it to become a better fishkeeper. Some of them you probably haven’t even considered. If you have tropical fish, African cichlids, American cichlids, then you simply can't be perfect, and mistakes will happen, but you can learn and grow. Some of these mistakes are ones NOT commonly talked about, so let's make sure we're avoiding them and being the best fish keeper we can be!
Cichlid Charmer is dedicated to sharing the joy of keeping African cichlids and American cichlids and sharing information about them. Much of my content is not cichlid fish specific, however. It also pertains to all tropical fish aquariums. I will share what I have learned about cichlids and other fish, and everyone is welcomed to comment with their own experiences and information about fish and aquarium practices in general.

So what’s your mistake? Let us know. Thanks for watching!
My BIGGEST mistake was that when you outgrow a piece of equipment you should NEVER just let it go. Later on I promise you will run into a situation where that piece of hardware will save fish lives. Example, the old box filter I started my first tank with is the same piece of equipment that I now use to buffer my water either up or down for the proper PH.
That’s a good one! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience 😎
Yes! Have had aquariums for 20 years or so and I keep everything that's functional. Amazing how often every piece (including small/spare aquariums) come in handy.
Making mistakes is part of the process of learning, how you learn and grow is the difference between being a good fish keeper and a great fish keeper. Always listen to everyone’s advice and do not be stubborn that you know best. Those that are having trouble free aquariums with good maintenance and beautiful coloured fish are generally those you should be taking advice from. Making mistakes is not the end of the world, just learn and grow
Amen!
Guilty of short quarantine and one missing here... overfeeding! an easy one I guess
I’m guilty of both too! Thank you 🙏
My biggest mistake was trying to have fish that don't thrive with my super hard well water here in Central Florida. Almost gave the hobby up. 😢. Death and more deaths. Then got my beautiful African cichlids and peacocks in 125 gal. Been 2 years now and fish are super healthy and have more babies than I can handle.
I’m guessing that might have had your head spinning trying to figure out what was wrong. Your Africans love your wonderful well water!
I love your content! Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much!
Quarantine!! Ok they’re in long enough, in the big tank now!! lol
SO easy to do! 🥰
Love your videos and your tanks!!!!!
Hey Ryan! Good to see you here again. I love your fish too as you already know 🥰
Thanks for the video boss!
You’re welcome - thanks for watching and commenting!
Amazing channel!!
Thanks, Daniel 🥰
CC,
Awesome video and advice. You brought out some good points. I made the mistake of not researching and also adding to many fish at once which overloaded my bacteria and caused a horrific crash in the cycle. All of my fish but one died. I felt so bad. I almost quit the hobby altogether. But I decided to do more research and watched more UA-cam videos. And read more forums. Than I tried again and now I have a successful CA/SA cichlids tank. I realized that AF cichlids weren’t for me right now and went with the bigger boys. Appreciate the video and the time brother. Can’t wait to see the new tank and what you chose for wet pets on the CA/SA side.
That’s an awesome victory story - learning from your mistakes 🥰. My first ACs I added way too many for my 75 and crashed my cycle. Fortunately I controlled it and didn’t lose anyone, but it was TENSE! Good to hear from you, Jeremy. I’m excited for my Americans!
Great video thanks for sharing my friend.
Thanks, Danny 😍
yessss
@@bexiexzyesss to what, my friend?
to your great video@@CichlidCharmer
@@bexiexzahhhh, well thank you! ❤🙏
Grathbar’s hammers from galaxy quest right?
Bingo! Love that movie
My biggest mistake when I first started was overfeeding.
Never give up, never surrender!
Probably everyone is right there with you on that!
CC, if you have advice for those of us raising baby/juvenile African cichlids (all types), I'd love to hear it. Feeding schedules, temps, decor, lighting, growth expectations, temperaments... anything! UA-cam seems to be lacking this content. Your videos are outstanding and very helpful. Thank you.
So… right now I don’t have much experience in raising fry. I think the Cichlid Bros might have some good videos on it, and I bet Jason the Grey does as well. Perhaps someday, but these guys are taking up all my time already, so maybe after I get my American tank up and running I will be able to catch up. Thank you for asking, and I hope you have fun on your adventure. Juvies… I have experience with them, since I usually buy juvies, but not fry.
Thank you, I'll check those guys out. FWIW, juvies is presently the more relevant subject for me. I have a bunch of roughly 2" haps/peacocks. Definitely having fun on this adventure with them! @@CichlidCharmer
Biggest mistake was not cycling properly on a new mbuna tank. Had issues w/all the baddies: ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. They claimed two innocent lives :( Took a while to get it under control. Take your time everyone! Do it right and everyone lives (like when you subscribe to Cichlid Charmer so no one dies).
That’s such a good one - it’ll be in the next one 😂. And yes, spread the word about subscribing - choose life! 🤣
What about putting a speaker above your tank that could scare your fish?
It’s a surround so it isn’t very loud.
What all fish do you have in your alcatraz tank?
Such a timely question! I am working RIGHT NOW on the video for a week from Saturday that’s going over every single one in detail. Make sure you subscribe and turn on notifications so you know once it’s out 😎
Aw Hi Stella and Molly you both are so cute. OK I have made all these mistakes but the last one. Like getting those cute little angel fish, stick them into a 29gal tank with a bunch of little fin nippers, only to find out how big Angels really get (with some fins nipped off) wow right, oh I have made many and many mistakes and still do I admit it. I try not to be like the "last mistake" how do we all learn without asking questions and one doesn't need to be made to feel stupid or judged so thank you for sharing this one for sure. I'm one of those crazy fish people well back into it right, and I enjoy your channel and learn a lot, Thank You! OK, already stated here, but "Galaxy Quest" and yes, I'm a movie nerd too haha!
Love your comments every single time, Polly 😂And I knew you would greet my 8mo old and 14 year old wieners 🥰. You could never be mistake no 6
Aw thank you, I forgot to agree about the Pleco thing, yup never seen Royal hides in the first 45gal. or is it being terrorized yikes@@CichlidCharmer
LOL but you can just imagine how beautiful they might be, right?
I have one of those hawkliceps from Ron’s. Mines about 8 inches and he just started turning blue
Ooo nice! I don’t feel like I’ve seen you on here for a while, Eli. Good to hear from you!
I haven’t commented in awhile. But I’m always watching 👀 . You videos upload really early here in Michigan on Saturday morning so I get to see them right when I wake up ! Which is nice.
@@elivoorhees7075ooooh! Well thank you Eli!
I’ll start commenting more. It only takes a second and I’m really loving what your doing with your tank
I need to add more. Mines a 210 and I’m looking for a lot more unique ones like yours …. Once I see an availability I’m going to pull the trigger . I’m glad to see you got a mdoka white lip. My wife tells me we have too much blue. I don’t disagree but I’d like to add a yellow lab and a couple more flavors to the mix. I love your zebra obliqeuidens
I want your dog!
Mine!
Have you used black sand in your aquarium or consider using it
Yes! It’s super important to rinse it beforehand several times! Until the water is clear or it can be a massive headache!
I haven’t, but I have considered using it in my upcoming big American cichlids tank.
I have regular aragonite and thinking of changing to black Carib sea sand
Galaxy Quest is the best. RIP Alan Rickman.
Nailed it 🤪
If you haven’t made a mistake it’s a lie or you have one of those plastic fish bubblers, this being said learning and retaining that information is where it all comes together. Prime time is awesome and Jason especially is like having a professor that actually cares about your tank! But seriously my worst mistake is just not recognizing the situation for what it was and doing part of the work thinking I could save time or money and doing that again to complete a total volume change but it should have happened the first time not the second time because it was until I finally the third time I did the change I wanted and that is when life returned to the tank! So never be afraid to do enough, because wishing to do more later is just that, a wish
That’s a great point. I feel that way about buying equipment also - don’t buy ALMOST what you want or need. You’ll just wind up buying it twice. Glad you got it corrected though through your dedication. It’s good to see you back, @chillyhappy!
Just a suggestion, why don't you move your yellow lab, from Alcatraz to the mbuna tank? He is a mbuna.
Yellow labs do surprisingly well in general with haps and peacocks. It's difficult to find pure yellow in the haps and peacock world except for saffron peacocks but these are rare. In my opinion, his yellow lab works well with the haps and peacock tank as an mbuna-exception.
Thank you - you said it better than I would have. I also miss Ray, and even though I thought of moving him, I would just really miss him in Alcatraz. Plus he loves those pipes 🤩
Good question! The response from 4417t said it well.
