The West Block: April 28, 2024 | Why aren't there more foreign grocers in Canada?

  • Following the Canadian federal government’s announcement of a $15-billion Honda electric vehicle plant in Ontario, ‘The West Block’ host Mercedes Stephenson asks Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne for a follow-up to his government’s efforts to increase grocery store competition. Minister Champagne discusses his talks with foreign grocery chains, as well as Canada’s electric vehicle infrastructure.
Plus, the federal government announced new sanctions on Belarusian officials who have been involved with human right violations since the country’s 2020 presidential election. This move comes after a United Nations report that says the number of political prisoners in Belarus has grown since the disputed election. Stephenson sits down with Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya to talk about her life in exile, her jailed husband, and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ties to the current Belarusian regime.

It's odd how your comment gets retained but the one I wrote standing up for democracy was removed in less than 30 seconds.

lol and no one cares about Pierre’s road trip. People hate the budget. People hate Trudeau. Time for an election please Canadians want change.

Most Canadians I talk to are not impressed with either of our options. On social media the narrative of "if you don't like one leader you like the other one" doesn't ring true when I talk to people. The next election will involve holding our nose at the ballot box, one way or the other. Pierre hanging out with F-Trudeau flags only appeals to the people waving them

I cared about Pierre’s road trip. One of the things I worry about the most is what if we get another pandemic while he’s in power? Will he just let it rip through the country unchecked?

A more salient question is why did Justin's government resist investigations into foreign interference? 🤔

@@tomcotter8138 First I am no fan of Justin - I studied Pierre when he got elected - He would actually be insanely worse that his followers believe. Then I studied him going back about 15 years and 😱. He is the most chronic liar of a politician I have ever come across. I am actually hoping for a Conservative minority with the NDP. Likely the biggest oxymoron in Canadian history🤣🤣🤣.

i remember the last senate hearings for the food giants, Past 2 years the 3 co’s spent more than $3 B buying back their shares and at a time of food price inflation & grocery workers for metro were on strike 3,000 ontario workers on strike for weeks trying to get better pay of an extra $2/hr & no hero pay given as promised for grocery workers during covid, -Loblaws & empire, metro spent collectively billions in the past 3 yrs on share buy backs & kept increasing their numbers for the past several yrs
    • In 2022 empire spent $248M on buy backs
    • Metro $470m & loblaws $1.2B
    • And yet before parliament they were crying poverty with slim margins And don't forget Freelands last years budget claimed they are taxing the grocers a mere 1% on the Share buy backs-so they are paying their share of taxes !!!!!! THIS GOV'T HAS GOT TO GO !!!!!

Groceries are expensive because of carbon tax. Our more than half income goes to taxes. This government is punishing working class. For electric vehicles you need charging stations. Apartment buildings don’t have it some mall parking do have but there is line up. Now this government even removed parking requirements from apartment buildings, where are they going to charge EVs. EV doesn’t go long distance not practical out of the city. EV fails in cold temperatures like Canadian winter, not practical at all.

The single reason why Foreign Grocers and Retailers can't make it in Canada is The Bi- Lingual Labeling Requirement. House brands that are popular in Single language labeling, are not allowed, and so they cannot compete unless they get everything relabeled in Bi Lingual language which is a very expensive investment at the very outset. This was a big part of why Target could not successfully transit to the Canadian market. They could not get enough Bi- Lingual labeled Products produced, to fill the shelves of their vast store square footage.

It is ridiculous with the name labelling. Where I live nearly every sign is gradually being changed to feature the native words so that the English is so tiny that it is nearly obliterated. Unfortunately the native name is nearly impossible to read, spell, or pronounce!
I vote for small language labels but LARGE pictures of what is inside package. We are heading towards that anyway because more and more people can't read or spell in their only language anyway. 🙃🤐☹

Good point I had forgot about our language labelling laws. I'll add to your comment this is to little to late the grocery monopoly should never have happened in the first place This is the NDP/Liberals way of covering up another screw up

As far as Pierre stopping to chat with Canadians, I watched the entire video and the signs have nothing to do with him simply chatting with Canadians. I believe that Trudeau fans are simply pissed that it is so unsafe for Trudeau to show his head anywhere in Canada but Poilievre is welcome wherever he goes.

I only buy what's on sale and all the stores offer competitive pricing, all point cards offer discounts and special promotions, as well as redeeming points for $$$ off groceries, I'm 60 and as a kid my mother taught me how to economize , this way, I have to live on less than $20,000 a year and own nothing. That's my problem not the government's.
