I really love this series. Unfortunately I thrift less now, for three main reasons. Almost everything is polyester, Shien type quality at my local thrift stoes. Prices have gone up significantly, so when you do find decent brands like American Eagle, Gap or even some good H&M pieces, they are priced as if you were to buy them new. I also gained weight and sizes are a nightmare at the thrift store now, I can hardly find anything that fits me. I do still try to look for the higher quality clothes, even when I shop fast fashion brands. So these videos help a lot.
Finding good clothes in the thrift for us folks who aren’t an xs so I feel ya! So places like Old Navy, Walmart and Target are the few size inclusive brands so they are the options we have.
Wal Mart is having a moment in the clothing department! They have a lot more clothes on line though. I have found that going in store is terrible. There are so many influencers who order loads of Wal Mart clothes and do videos just like you and many people are buying these clothes. So much so that the good stuff is always sold out. I’ve been Watching your videos for 2 years now and you have taught me to look for quality so thank you! No polyester!
I am a long term die hard thrifter. It’s all about great fabric and excellent construction. Just the feel of a fabric tells me if I want to look further. I agree that now a days there are some very well done polyesters. Because of prices at thrift stores going up and quality going down I have found myself at WALMART!!! I never would have thought. I now have a number of basic tops and even jeans from there. I have noticed that Free Assembly does have some quality fabrics sometimes and the styles are very classic. My color palette is mostly fall tones so they don’t always have something for me as they tend to be more navy and white leaning. I certainly have been pleasantly surprised at times. Thanks for your in depth dive.
You would have loved the estate sale I went to a few days ago. The woman had crammed clothing into every possible closet, dresser, drawer imaginable. The first day it was hard to yank something out! However after muscled through I found a 100% camel hair vintage belted structured mid calf coat. Perfect condition, fully lined from a store in Gross Pointe Michigan which catered to the wealthy Detroit Ford executives wives. 1/2 price at $2.50. I live in Florida too, but this is such a stunner, I have to keep it for awhile. Vintage cashmere $4 each, European linen vintage dresses…..yum
Omg that sounds like a dream!!!! 🙀🙀 I still haven’t done any estate sales out here but I think I need to start putting them on my list! Nothing beats a vintage camel hair coat ❤️🙌
I really appreciate your perspective. As a home seamstress for years, trained by a very informed grandmother, I have always looked at fabric and details. Thank you!
I find with the Free Assembly line, the fabric is nice, but isn't sewn on the bias. Often after washing, the seams warp and twist. Also, the cotton isn't treated and shrinks drastically after a wash.
I buy time and tru leggings for working out. Dont know if its squat proof since i wear long shirts for working out but i like that its breathable cotton
You’ve made me so much more conscious of the fabric and I love it. I prefer pieces that are going to last. I never ever would have thought of Walmart but I’m going to check it out!❤
Walmart is stepping up their game in their fashion where they’re offering some quality clothing at an affordable price. Yes, they still have their typical cheap polyester clothing, but they’re offering a lot more 100% cotton items at a good price point.
I found your channel a while ago and have enjoyed watching all of your content (first time commenting). I think another subject that might be fun is to recreate some expensive looks with thrifted finds. For instance Reformation has a red button up shirt I've had on my list for a while. but at $148 I keep thinking I can find similar in the men's dept of a thrift store for under $10. I've recently been shopping higher end consignment and charity shops for designer pieces and higher quality accessories, like scarves and belts, jewelry.
11:19 I lowkey LOVE this on you w loafers, big art gallery glasses … it’s giving “I’m an expensive potter” maybe add a beret??? Or paint splattered doc martens & a big news boy cap. Love!
Really liked this video. The Lee range has some nice stuff too. I prefer thrifting but the thrift stores have been infiltrated by polyester and throw away type of items. How funny, I bought the two piece lounge set and found it super comfy 😂 I think the size has to be perfect or it can end up looking too big.
I wanted so badly for that Lee set to work for me 😭 I think you’re right though, a lot of the things I didn’t like were based on fit and not on quality. I saw some Lee coveralls that I loved also!
I will not wear clothing made of polyester, acrylic or rayon. I wear cotton, linen, silk, wool and cashmere fibers only. I will wear some nylon or viscose blended in. I have kept clothing for decades due to these high quality fabrics.
Old Navy is a hit/miss, but when it's a hit it's really good. They are a fun store to watch strategy-wise. They cover low end, but less polyester. Sister stores are gap, banana Republic and Athleta.
I have 2 of the Scoop blazers (black and tan) LOVE them they really are great, and the pockets are just sewn down for shipping purposes so they can be easily opened by popping the stitches and the pockets are there so yes get the blazers and coat and tee shirts for sure. Online is always restocking items so look there as well
Laura, great video and I have to say I never purchase clothing from WMart. Just not my gig, I can't relive the 70's when poly was in everything. The Scoop blazer did look amazing on you and I thank you for your deep analysis of the inventory. Taking a look at the Target vid now. Happy Holidays
I miss No Boundaries (NOBO) and Faded Glory from Wamart. They used to be good but now they are being phased out. I had some luck with a few Time And Tru pieces and similar brands but quality varies a lot. For a great fit and durability there shouldn't be no more than 3 percent of spandex in your denim.
I wish that you could do Amazon! I'm really curious to see what pieces that you would consider great quality. Oh! Also thought about Old Navy & Gap! Those two would be really great.
My local WalMart recently had a complete reset, and the clothing area looks more like a department store. There’s a much better selection of clothes as well n
As someone who is allergic to wool, I have no issue with cotton OR rayon. I also am able to hem and tailor clothes (thanks to highs school Home Economics classes) so that’s not an issue for me, either.
Wal-Mart's clothes do not last for the most part. I have a black raincoat type jacket I bought there about 25 years ago, but that is a real exception. I don't even try there anymore.
I have many pieces from there that are 10 to 20 years old and still good. The brands they had were better and the new ones have some hit and misses. It is all about luck and a little search.
Prefer thrifting if looking for quality clothing, not Walmart or Target. Even the best department stores carry low end quality, I want my pieces to look good after multi washing. I know that years agp when cotton prices went a lot higher most manufacturers switched to polyester or a blend. New watcher of your videos, plan on watching more.
My blue collar husband blows through 100% cotton denim like it’s tissue paper. High stretch denim is the only way we’ve not had to replace jeans quarterly.
Learn to sew! Hemming jeans is easy but I do have to hand sew at the seams which are thick. My machine handles thickness okay but jean seams is a no go. I have broken too many needles. Also, loved the boucle jacket in both plaid and white. But big box stores are highly unlikely to have plaid that has been matched at the seams. That was the case with that plaid jacket you tried on. Anyway, love your videos.
I like your videos. Interesting stuff. Just an FYI, Jessica Simpson just started getting carried in Walmart within the last six months. Jessica Simpson has been carried by Macys for the past 10-15 years. I’m guessing she signed with Walmart due to Macys current state of store closings.
If Walmart sold Free Assembly and Scoop at my local Walmarts, I would consider buying more clothes there. However, it all horrible quality clothes that are already falling apart.
They have all kinds of quality at any store. Just because they are Walmart or Target doesn't mean all is bad. If you look at their website you will even find premium brands.
Omg! Shopped Walmart exactly once! Ended up buying socks. Got home and sure enough a hole in my socks. Never again! Also, sizing on clothes ran huge at Walmart! They didn’t sell anything small enough. 😩Target is 1000x better!
There is a new Netflix documentary called 'Buy Now, the shopping conspiracy' . Over 100 Billion pieces of clothing are produced EVERY year. Even tangentially promoting buying from big box stores is probably not a great idea
I see what you’re saying, and I think for years I’ve felt the same way and felt absolutely hopeless about it. But eventually I hit a point where I realized people don’t know or understand what quality even is anymore. I’d rather help people make more informed purchase decisions.
@lauravonv I do get that your coming from a good place, but a quality piece should relate to more than to the construction and material content. We also need to look at the reputation of the company. How likely is it that they source their cotton or wool ecologically or ethically. How wasteful is their manufacturing process. Are they known for treating their employees in the manufacturing plants well. We need to hold them more accountable. You do more than most in attempting to promote good choices, and I do truly appreciate that
I wholeheartedly agree. I hope someday we see the change that needs to happen. And laws go into place that can stop these bad practices from taking place. Thanks for giving me the space to talk about it with you. I really do appreciate that. Trust me, any and all constructive criticism is always taken in. I’m watching that documentary tonight that you suggested ❤️❤️
@lauravonv thank you for encouraging the conversations, it is truly appreciated. The doc comes out in my country on Nov 20th, but can't wait to see it :)

American Eagle is a “decent brand”? 😅

I really like the time and true long sleeve, t shirt and tanks for all my basics. Also a common find in the thrift so that is a bonus for me too.
I find with the Free Assembly line, the fabric is nice, but isn't sewn on the bias. Often after washing, the seams warp and twist. Also, the cotton isn't treated and shrinks drastically after a wash.
Those Sophia Melissa high rise flare jeans are my favorite
I buy time and tru leggings for working out. Dont know if its squat proof since i wear long shirts for working out but i like that its breathable cotton
Do you have a video about what brands you would be looking for in a thrift store for personal use?
You’ve made me so much more conscious of the fabric and I love it. I prefer pieces that are going to last. I never ever would have thought of Walmart but I’m going to check it out!❤
Some of my favorite peices come from walmart!!!! ❤❤❤😂
I'd love to see you do Old Navy. 😊

Totally agree

I’ve had problems with Old Navy shirts twisting when washed and that twist bothers my sensory issues.
@JessicaWarrick-u7o not all of them. There's a wide range of quality.

Can you do Sam’s Club or Costco clothes? If you already have a membership, that is.
As someone who is allergic to wool, I have no issue with cotton OR rayon. I also am able to hem and tailor clothes (thanks to highs school Home Economics classes) so that’s not an issue for me, either.
Ridge cut brand winter coats are amazing for quality and thoughtfulness in a garment. Great quality at a great price point, better than carhartt.
Keep nerding dear!!!!!
We have all known Wally’s carries the best t’s!!!
Wow😄..That Was An Education ‼️‼️👍🏾👍🏾

Can you do Primark next?
Jessica Simpson use to be sold in other stores before..I forget which stores
If tailoring is the issue and one can do the alteration at home would you say the jeans would b good value.
Definitely! I loved the quality ❤️

Ohhhh interesting! Thank you for letting me know! ❤️❤️
If Walmart sold Free Assembly and Scoop at my local Walmarts, I would consider buying more clothes there. However, it all horrible quality clothes that are already falling apart.
That brown plaid jacket will start pilling after 2 washes.
The Target tees are burn out style tees so they are meant to be thinner, the Walmart tees are not, they are standard tees.
Do you have a sense of why there are surprise good quality clothing pieces in stores like Target, Walmart, Old Navy etc? Why might that be?
They have all kinds of quality at any store. Just because they are Walmart or Target doesn't mean all is bad. If you look at their website you will even find premium brands.
The jacket was hideous. Glad it didnt have lining 😂.
I thrift only
Same here for the most part. It’s the best way to do it if you have the time ❤️❤️❤️
Those coats look very cheap with thin fabric.
Omg! Shopped Walmart exactly once! Ended up buying socks. Got home and sure enough a hole in my socks. Never again! Also, sizing on clothes ran huge at Walmart! They didn’t sell anything small enough. 😩Target is 1000x better!
People are bigger now anyway so it is great that clothes run bigger for many. I buy all my staples there and never found a hole in them.
@@vaderladylSame here! It's one of the few places I can find clothes that are big enough to fit me that I can afford.
No, it's a fast fashion- mass market place. Period.
I can't find denim jean. I use to wear jeans all the time until they made these disgusting stretchy jeans!
No dei no Walmart.
Which do you have a problem with: diversity, equity or inclusion?
