@@chuc5o Yes, Bea Arthur had a very husky manly type of voice. True, Jean Stapleton's was not like that, but she did have a deeper voice. My point was that she did the high-pitch sounding voice only for the role of Edith Bunker, it wasn't her normal sounding voice, which was deeper.

The saddest one I ever saw, was when Archie woke up in bed, and he rolled over to wake Edith up. After a few times of talking to her, and jiggling her a bit, he came to the realization, that his beloved wife of over 50 years, had died in her sleep. I cried like a Baby, and I'm no wimpy guy, but I think that episode made almost all of America shed a few tears. Archie's favorite chair that he sat in every night when he got home from work, is actually in The Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. That show was that iconic. It's a piece of Americana.

Jean and Carroll were obviously brilliant comedic actors but they were even more compelling to watch during their occasional dramatic scenes. All in the Family was one of those rare gems that could have you laughing yourself silly one moment and crying the next. The show is known for its controversial topics and unvarnished dialog, but the true genius is in the family members themselves and how relatable they are. Many of us grew up in a family just like the Bunkers, and watching each character evolve over the years was such a treat. It remains one of the best and most memorable television shows in history.

The whole show was very serious! It covered all the things everyone was afraid to talk about or confront; brought to centerstage with some really raucous comedy! It was the show which comedy brought the most diverse audience together, white, black, racist, Jewish, sexist.....etc. Norman Lear wrote it and the comedy and subject matter still hold context, content and humor in the 21st century!
Great show!!! Way ahead of its time; yet also so timely!❤❤

When Edith died in 1980 (even though it was off screen) we were all devastated. She and Archie had become part of our own families in a way so it was like losing a family member to us young adults who had grown up watching the show for 9 years. From 8 years of All In The Family until the 1st episode of the 2nd season of Archie Bunker's Place she was a staple in our homes via the tv.
Unfortunately for us Jean Stapleton was ready to move on from the part. She did 5 episodes of the new show during the 1st season and then she was gone.

Archie was VERY rough around the edges, but with a heart of gold that he did his best to hide. A definite "man of his time", he thought he ruled the house, but everyone knew it was Edith. Even Archie, though he would never admit it to anyone. That last scene was as close as he got to admitting it to Edith.

  • @StevePaur-hf4vy

The serious one about Edith and church had to do with the fact that one of her friends, who was a transvestite man, was murdered during the Christmas season. The character Beverly LaSalle mad three appearances on the show and was introduced as a passenger in the taxi archie was driving whose life he saved. Archie did not know the person was a guy in drag and gave the man mouth to mouth. This sparked Archie's homophobia and a debate with Meathead about human life. At the end of the episode Archie accepts Beverly for who he is. In the second episode where Beverly appears Edith and Beverly become better acquaintances. In the third episode Mike and Beverly are brutally attacked as they walk to the store because of Beverly being a transvestite. Mike is hospitalized and Beverly is killed. The first episode with Beverly is called Archie the Hero, the second is Beverly Rides Again and the third is a two parter called Edith's Crisis of Faith.

This was my favorite show back in the day. My favorite was Edith but her and Archie together were something else. I hope you have the opportunity to watch the whole show. The lady named Louise is from a show called the Jefferson’s about Louise and George Who moved up town because they made it with their business. I think it was a spinoff of this show it’s another funny show. I loved your reactions to the Bunkers!

"Edith's Crisis of Faith" is a two-part episode of the U.S. sitcom All in the Family. It aired as the 13th and 14th episodes of season 8

My 2 favroite sitcom of all time are, WKRP in Cincinnati a ground breaking show like All in the Family. In the 70s there was a WHO concert in Cincinnati where a bunch of concert goers got killed in a rush for seats. WKRP did an episode weeks later about what happened and payed tribute. Full episodes are on UA-cam for free. The Turkey drop episode is classic tv. Or watch the short clip WKRP in Cincinnati Pink Floyd. They played modern now classic music on the show as a big part of the show. The other is TAXI. Watch any clip with Danny Devito or Christopher Lloyd.

She didn't want to go to church, because she had a transvestite friend who was murdered for his difference. It's a series of shows. The man's female name was Beverly. He initially met Edith when Archie was driving cab, she took his cab, and collapsed. Archie gave her mouth to mouth resuscitation (she recovers and this is the hilarious part) Archie thought he was giving mouth to mouth to a woman, but of course it's a man. Edith really becomes good friends with Beverly. She was devastated when Beverly was killed, and disillusioned with church as a result. It's a really good series of shows. Edith(Jean Stapleton) was in the movie You've Got Mail with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. A take-off on the computer age, and changing families, and Hanks and Ryan have an amazing screen chemistry, Stapleton plays Meg Ryan's friend/store bookkeeper. A really good look at what an amazing role she really played as Edith, it's so entirely different, including her voice. You'll see Jean Stapleton in her real voice, and a role more real.❤

The last clip shown (Season 9 episode 25 - "Too Good Edith") would be Jean Stapleton's last appearance on the show. Over the prior 2 seasons, she'd asked to appear in only 1/2 of the episodes produced, and in those episodes where she wasn't seen, the bar/restaurant that Archie owned was featured more and more. When her contract was up and she decided not to return, the show's title was changed to ARCHIE BUNKER'S PLACE, and Edith had died off screen. We are to assume that the Phlebitis she was diagnosed with in this episode was the cause.

I think you guys are missing the point of the show. It is making fun of the old "woman's place is in the home" thing that was normal in the 1950s and into the '60s. This show is poking fun at that, as well as at all kinds of prejudices. We didn't all think this way in the '70s.
Also, I don't know what you mean by them making her voice that way. She did create that voice for the character but that's acting. In real life both stars were very much the opposite of these characters.

The last clip that you watched was the last time that we saw Edith alive. The episodes after dealt with her dying. You should do a reaction to that.

The videos where she dies is so sad. Then the one where Archie finally goes into their bedroom after she dies and he let's out his feelings get the tissues 🤧 and there is one where she is raped. But to me the best show is when two of their friends drop by after going to hawaii and he goes to the bar with Archie and hits on a girl And his wife is back at the house with Edith and tells edith they're having problems. When the two leave, archie reaches over and takes a hold of edith's hand.
Being raised on the shows and the craziness of Archie. And the way he acts like he don't really respect Edith when he acts like this the above scenes He really shows his love for her and it just warms your heart.

There are 2 you should react to. The Beverly LaSalle trilogy, very funny and heartbreaking. and the 2-part episode where Edith is attack by a rapist, again, funny, upsetting but these shows are incredible. They addressed some truly forbidden subjects at the time and really taught people through the characters we all became to love; we were so invested! TV GOLD....

The reason Edith wasn't going to go to church was that her dear friend Beverly, a transvestite, was murdered by a group who hated him for his difference. Edith felt betrayed by God, and was very angry and hurt that her friend was gone. Watch the series of shows about Beverly, how they first met, and their friendship developed. It's a powerful set of shows about differences. All in the Family has many messages, many times that informed us about racial differences, generational differences, religious, military as well. There are episodes about draft dodgers, refusing baptism, when their little grandson was Joey was born. Try those clips they are terrific ❤

If you see a lot of episodes of the show you find that she's largely the sidekick who is understated while Archie is the big personality, so when she has a central moment it stands out more by contrast. With clips like this you lose that sense. o
