    Black/grey guy made so many wonderful run around off forehand winners. Beautiful watching him set these up and making such good position to exploit the short down the middle ball, the finishing with flat deep or angled winners. Great to study. Thanks so much for sharing these videos I think it’s possible that mid level players learn as much from watching this as they do from watching the giants. Sometimes the top players are just so good at what they do they are hard to imitate but there a plays here that we all can learn from.

    If you pay attention the big difference with these guys and higher ranked players is their movement. These guys are standing and waiting while others anticipate and cross their feet while positioning. The shot placement comes with time, movement is what is key.

      Hey Jack I'm not really happy with where my serve is at right now either! I've been fiddling with it for a long time, but not really put the work in to get it right. Kids, coaching, work... you know the story! I'm hitting the kicker really well - it's harder to see on these courts because it was cold and the courts are fast and low-bouncing. But I'm just hitting first serves for spots, not really serving with a ton of pace - certainly not as much as I used to or am capable of!

It also seemed like your regular groundstrokes were for the most part in his strike zone and he could really hit out. Do you think slicing a bit more could have helped you any more, one to get the ball low and maybe draw him to the net on your terms? 899TK I like your suggestion. I did have success with drop shots as I think they were surprises. Maybe I should have sliced more and brought him to net. However, grey shirt has excellent volleys. As you mentioned, a low, short slice can be a difficult ball to hit when being forced to transition from baseline to net. I don’t think it would have worked as grey shirt is an excellent doubles player who serves and volleys, but I do like your strategy against players who are less comfortable with transitioning to the net. If I had to make a couple of observations, to have any chance at all with a player as great all around as gray shirt player is, you would have to make him run and you would have to get a better jump on the ball. There's a split step, but there's a noticeable pause before you start moving in earnest. Hard groundies in the corner would be lovely, but big loopy shots with topspin, like McEnroe used to do to frustrate Lendl and kept him behind the baseline, would be good, too. Also, sometimes you didn't get back into a good position to receive the ball, which he exploited ruthlessly. Great drop shots, though, and a good fight.

      @TennisTrollChannel  4 роки тому

      Thank you for the feedback and suggestions. Agree - I'm a step too slow for this match up and it showed. I like the idea of high loopy balls. Good analogy with McEnroe and Lendl as that strategy worked well when it was executed. A quicker step, pin opponent to baseline, and then attack the first short ball - that's a solid plan against we can all consider.

  • @alwaysprepared

    Hmm.... The guy is really good and seems to play the percentages well. He also is quick to take advantage of any short balls. The vast majority of the shots he hit for winners were around or inside the service line. He was eating you up on those short shots. Granted, some of those short shots you hit were caused by good shots from your opponent. But, a good percentage were just rally balls hit short.
    I feel like you did some good things when taking some chances going closer to the corners on rally balls. Getting him on the run did pay some dividends. And I liked that you did some underspin shots and some dropshots when he was out of position.
    So, to sum up, I feel you need to take a few more chances trying to get him running side to side and try your best to hit deep shots if you can't pull him wide, even if they are looping shots. It didn't appear he wanted to take deep shots out of the air with volleys, so I think you would be safe doing deep, somewhat looping balls. Also, continue to hit short when he is out of position and hit some sharp underspin shots that stay low when you get the chance....
    I know it's a tough ask to do all those things, but the alternative is getting crushed... Nothing to lose... Except the match... LOL Good luck!

      @TennisTrollChannel  4 роки тому

      I did hit more short balls in this matchup than usual. These courts are a little fast and wondering if I was catching them later than usual. Not sure. However, gray did an excellent job of attacking my short balls. Wasn't much I could do to counter his attacks. However, as you said I should have played with more loopy shots and slices. I'm started to see that I need to do that more all my matches as I tend to lack variety. The angles are a good idea, but as you said, need to pull him out of position and then use. I believe there were a couple times I tried it and he was not out of position and therefore it became an easy ball for him to attack. Thank you for the suggestions.

    • @alwaysprepared
      @alwaysprepared 4 роки тому

      @@TennisTrollChannel Yup. Against players of similar caliber to you, you can get away with a lot more indifferent shots. Against someone with good finishing skills, you are toast, however. The more you are able to hit every shot with some sort of purpose (besides just getting it back), the more success you will have.
      Obviously, against someone with better skills, it will be more difficult to hit every shot with purpose because that is what they are trying to do to you! The ultimate would be hitting with purpose to maneuver your opponent and the ball to enable you to hit your best shot against their worst shot as much as possible.
