We have owned both and they both have their advantages.
The advantage to a motor home is the travel experience. It really is great when you have kids with you.
The biggest disadvantages to a motor homes for us was:
    1. Less room than a 5th wheel.
    2. Cost us much more than a 5th wheel.
    3. That if you aren’t driving it a lot you will have very expensive mechanical repairs just because it sat unused.
We are retired now and travel in our 2018 Ram 2500 diesel and a 2019 34’ Grand Design Reflection 28bh. We have about $110k in it with upgrades to include inverter generator, solar, lithium batteries and several towing upgrades on the truck. She’s all paid for and ready to hit the road when this China virus burns out.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us HT. It sounds like you have a great rig for RV travels now.

The virus has long since burned out in China- maybe you could take your RV there and not have to worry.

Another consideration, in favour of a 'fiver', is that if you are planning on staying in a location for a month or so, you have the use of the tow vehicle to get around in. This is particularly useful if you're camped out in the 'boonies' for longer than the grocery capacity of your fridge.

Good point Wayne. I feel that 5th wheels are especially good RVs for boondocking. A couple reasons for this is they often have large tank capacities and a good amount of roof space for solar panels.

I considered a fifth wheel toy hauler for months until I found a gas motor home toy hauler. If you stick with a gas motor home vs diesel, the cost is comparable to buying a fifth wheel and a truck.

You counted the cost of a truck in the cost. What you didn’t mention factoring in is that many of us already own a truck. I have owned three motor homes, one camper, and now a fifth wheel. I have always owned a truck. Because I already have a truck I have to maintain the truck. When I owned a motor home, I had 2 engines to maintain. That is not to say I don’t love motor homes. I am going to be selling my fifth wheel and am considering whether to buy a motor home for our upcoming trip around the US after I retire in a couple of years. The getting up and using the restroom for my wife or just sitting on the couch if she gets uncomfortable in the front seat (she has arthritis in her hips) is a huge consideration. (I also like that she can make lunch while we travel down the road.)

All good points that you shared in this comment Steve. Your wife is going to love having the bathroom go with her as you travel. Cheri sure does!

Don’t forget, if you have a motor home and you need to go to the grocery store, you either need to pick everything up and drive to the store or have another vehicle.

Fifth wheel definitely not safer in windy conditions

    • @RVInspectionAndCare
      @RVInspectionAndCare  3 роки тому

That's interesting Joe. Do you feel that's the case because of the larger profile going down the road? Please let us know why you feel that 5th wheels are not as safe as TTs in windy conditions.

@@RVInspectionAndCare maybe not versus a travel trailer but versus a

For those that can't afford a Class A & find Class B's & C's too small, heavier 5th wheels are the best choice for dealing with wind.
When the winds get past 30-40mph it's time for _any_ RV to pull over...
