    Can you please make a video on the whole process? At the best of my understanding goes like: 1. artificial insemination 2. pregnancy 3. Separating the calf (culoster, profilactor to 15 days) 4. after 15 days it gets sent to paddocks with the other calfs untill 100 days?
    I've got an exam on it soon. Our book is very boring, wanted to see and hear how the process goes. Thank you for the videos❤

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  2 роки тому +3

      Thanks Serg. We used to use a lot of fodder beet and we thought that it was good to help fill a ration out but it’s feed value was slightly limited. Also we found it made the 💩 a bit runny and it was harder to keep them clean. It has its place in the right ration though.

    Have you considered fermenting your feed? If done right it could lead to the feed becoming more digestible. Ever heard about gibberelic acid? It help's grasses grow faster during cold weather(i.e early spring,maybe late autumn too).

    Enjoyable video, can I ask a question, how many stabilise cows can you safely keep on 150 acres lowland grass farm, by that I mean cows followers and fattening stock

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Stephen. That’s a really tough question to answer because there are so many variables. Do you want to make silage? Will you out winter or house them? What kinds of grazing is it? Do you get frequent rain fall? Will you regularly re seed? It’s very different for everyone because it’s so system dependant.

    • @stephenross1581
      @stephenross1581 Рік тому

      @@baldysfarm I would hope all silage and hay was made on farm, all concentrates would be Bourgh in, there is housing for about 200 head, it’s in Northumberland so good grass growing and some reseeding would be carried out yearly, straw would be bought in the swath locally, I hope this helps you answer my question

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  Рік тому +1

      @@stephenross1581 So its hard to know exactly without seeing the place but I would imagine you could run at least 30 cows, with calves at foot and then still have enough grass to run your finishing steers and heifers. Id recommend tuitional grazing on no more than 3 day moves to maximise your grass production. Then you could make surplus into silage/hay. I personally think you could likely run 40 cows, plus followers and finishers but I would want to over promised without seeing the place. Other option would be to feed ammonia treated straw or straw and molasses to cows meaning you could stock a tiny bit harder. With the amount of cattle housing id also look into an integrated beef finishing scheme like elite beef to run along side the sucklers to give so cash flow year round.

    Very good video, I am looking at buying some dairy bull calves to wean to sell as yearlings, would you be able to give some tips and advice, thanks

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  2 роки тому

      Always happy to help. Selling as yearling is often a good trade and especially if you have Angus or Hereford named sires to make them eligible for a finishing premium. Ideally you would want to get your calves all from one place and with a good health status. We always treated calves with rispoval intranastal spray for pneumonia and then just kept a close eye on them. The key is to have a shed that’s not drafty but with good airflow. Ideally you would want good grass silage or I’d recommend rotational grazing if your turning them out. This will give them more high quality grass to eat. Might be useful to give a good quality creep to wean them onto and in order to get them fleshing up for sale if needed. Just keep an eye on the cost of that though as prices are high. Ideally you want a 16-18% protein level. The higher the better. Where about are you? If you want more information let me know and I’ll see if I can get my email to you somehow 👍

    how does the 2% rule work if the silage is ad-lib??

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  Рік тому +1

      Hey Graham, if silage is ad lib it’s more of a guideline to understand intakes. 👍 obviously when ad lib they will keep themselves full and can some times eat more, however that would usually lead to higher growth rates too.

    How many cows do you have on your farm? And how many do you have to kill per day to be profitable (or if you don't mind me asking, how much profit are you earning per month?) I am only 17 year old, but I find the farming business to be very interesting.

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  Рік тому +2

      Hey Owen. We currently run 140 suckler cows and finish all of the young stock. So at
      Peak times there’s over 400 cattle on farm. Each animal generates a profit, but we could finish a lot more animals with the same equipment we currently use so in theory we could be more profitable if we had more cattle.
      We don’t necessarily kill cattle every month as our block calving system means we get peaks and troughs in production so it’s hard to give realistic numbers but I guess we’d average 15 to 18 if you included cull cows. 👍

    Why u don't feed corn silage?

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  Місяць тому

      Few reasons really. We don’t grow it because its very wet here and ruins you fields getting it out. It’s not great for your soil and we don’t have facilities to store it during the winter very well. It is a great feed though, especially for finishing cattle.

      Currently we are getting around £4.15/kg deadweight for a carcass. So say they are 650kg liveweight and kill out at 56%, your looking at £1510.60 each which in Euros (at todays exchange rate) is 1769.13.
