Pull the handle down like your drilling. There’s a screw u tighten into the quill so u don’t have to hold it

If ya use it correctly. I use mine all the time for knife handles and it works wonderfully.

I have the same one. The bar to lean you tool on shouldn't only be about 1 1/8" away from your work peace. I also welded the bad to a plate to keep it from moving. Another thing I did was bolt down my drill press. There's another peace other than the pointed peace used on the bottom that has testy that I use and hammer it into place. Make sheer your tools are sharp and just like a large laity which I also use it helps to cut of the sharp edges a bit off of a rectangle peace of what're your tuning . On that small of a laity I recommend do so. One last thing is finding the center helps greatly and using the drill press leave to push down to make the fitting go deep into the wood is how I get a super tight fit and I don't move my table up I move the drill down lower. The table sitting up doesn't and never will give you the stability you need. I use it and make drawer handles and burnishing tools for leather. Also using files round and flat work great to get those edges smooth! I use small handle chisels and mostly files and sand paper! A round file a flat file and a dowel with some wood glue with sand paper rapped around works great! Hope this helps..

Billy, you have a drill press, push the quill into it, then lock it.

    A couple things:
1 bolt your drill press to the table
2 manufacturer recommends 10 to 12 inch drill press, you are using an 8 inch
3 get a harbor freight rasp set for $11 and you will get better results than using chisels

harbor freight doesn't sell any lathe with a price close to $90 even with coupons so for us poor people anything that allows us to do some basic turning without a lathe is worth it you just have to make some mods like cut the guide bar shorter so it fits closer to your work piece and one of HF's rubber bungy's work great for pulling the drill head down to keep pressure on the work piece, you just have to be inventive...

If you've got the aptitude and initiative to retrofit the whole thing to work right (and a drill press),
I would think you could just build your own.

Why don't you cut the top of the bar, so that you could get the bar closer to the workpiece?

I was about to say the same thing! With the top cut off, he could simply twist the bar closer to the wood, and all the problems were solved..

I make knobs and handles on mine just by mounting it up to the chuck and then shaping it with very coarse sandpaper and then fine sandpaper.

as for the bottom you will need a tapered drill to make the hole. you should have burned the center on the bottom applying pressure with the drill press lever then once it was burned in lube it and raise the table. as for the upright beam I would cut it shorter and get it closer to your work.

Some common sense applied to this problem would work wonders. First thing to do is knock off the corners before doing anything else. Next step, fix the drill press. If you've already convinced yourself it's crap and want to show it's crap, then it's crap. Try using a rasp.

put a small screw jack between the base & the bottom of the table...
OR; place a peace of all thread through the hole in the table, & put a spacer on at it's bottom, & a nut below that, to make it tighter...

The bolt on shaft that you place your chisel against is toooooo far from the work piece. You should position it about 1" away from the work.

At 2 min mark "tension on your workpiece" should be "axial compression" - just me being picky - great video, well presented. A few suggestions have been proposed previously- I'll add one more- how about a couple of wedges below the plate to bring the workpiece up, and thereby provide the compression?

Try putting a washer, eyelet or grommet in the live center hole. That should stop the hole from deforming.

The screw abs nut is right above your chuck on the right side. Use a flat screwdriver to tighten it and then tighten the nut after you tighten the set screw.

I don't think that most bench top drill presses are able to withstand lateral pressure on the quill. The bearings are not heavy enough nor is bearing mount for lateral pressure. This is why milling attachments don't work well.

I made one similar to that and wasn't happy i am making one with an extra power drill i have.I find that method too wably

  • @1960Griff

I ran a 1/2 inch, 9 inch long carriage bolt that's fully threaded (no shank) through the slot on the table and it doesn't move. I also panned the table and set the drill directly over the slot the bolt is in. You can get as close as you want.

  • @atticus2581
    @atticus2581 6 років тому

this is pretty simple. make your own live centre that doesnt wobble, and mount the drill press on its side. but it might be better to get a chuck for the angle grinder, and use that instead. higher rpm.

your intro is too long. it should be 0 to 3 seconds. if you could somehow make your intro less than zero seconds it would be even better.

Thanks for the video, I just bought one of those and hate it... for not.. Im wondering if I put a small hydrolic type lift system under the work table if that would help. Thanks for the insight. I may go the mini lathe HF method.

David Ramsey - read what I have written and you just might change your mind. I had the same issues as in the video but with a little bit of carpentry knowledge I was able to fix all the problems on my send try. It's not a large laity so don't expect large or hard projects. It's made for little things. Wheels for toy cars drawer knobs things of that nature even epoxy pens. Beads. Works great I even keep it set up on a second old drill press I have. Files and sand paper are the trick. Hand chisels. Large ones are made for large laiths which I also use. Hope this helps... don't give up .. if there's a will there's always a way. People make bowls with there drill presses and don't even have that kind of set up. I believe this fella just gave up to soon and may lack knowledge of how some power tools are to be used things like a drill press. No reason SN to lift your table. Bolt that sucker down.

    Remember, it's a drill press!
Once the piece of wood is in place crank down on the pspindle and lock the spindle in place. It's got to be a lot easier than pressing upward on the table with no leverage. 😃

So, Harbor Freight tools are cheap and shitty?
Pardon my annoying sarcasm. Thank you for posting, I am in the middle of figuring out how to turn my harbor freight drill press into a lathe. Its scary as hell because it cranks right into one speed....too f'n fast. Kinda got it under control with T nuts and screws. still gonna take a bit though. I need to figure some way to get a pin on the under side that will secure it and not burn and get loose. Sorry about the novel I just wrote to you. Take care bro.
