1997 seems like ancient history when watching this video! However, as somebody who regularly flew transatlantic in the 1990s, especially the late 1990s, it really wasn't very different than today. There were some differences pre-9/11, but security was always tight at LHR, and the visible police presence was as commonplace then as it is now. Obviously no smartphones existed, and the internet was still in its infancy in 1997 , but I can admit to buying my first airline ticket via the web - on Virgin Atlantic - way back in 1996! That must mean I am old...! Terminal 4 looks pretty much the same dated terminal today, albeit without the BA signage!
On the ramp, you won't find any passenger A300s/A310s, B747 Classics or DC-10s these days, but some of the B747-400s and B777s are still with us!

I feel like the airports here in Sweden have stayed mostly the same since right before 9/11.
The only changes that I have really noticed are that we must have a ticket in order to get to the gates, as well as more restrictions on carry-ons (mostly items that can be used as weapons, large bottles and things like that), and also of course reinforced cockpit doors and a ban on taking visitors to the cockpit.
But other than that, it seems to be pretty much the same here, even at Arlanda airport.
All that I ever need to do at any airport here is to say my name at the check-in desk, grab my ticket, go to the security checks and then have my baggage scanned while I walk through a metal detector with my shoes on, and that's it.
This usually doesn't take longer than maybe 10-15 minutes, not even when I have a couple people in front of me at the security checks.
I guess we are more relaxed like this compared to the super-strict routines at the American airports because we weren't affected by 9/11 in the same direct way as America.

@@Peter_1986 Don't forget the proliferation of flat screen monitors these days...back in the 1990s, it was all CRT monitors and television-sized displays. But yeah, it is not as different as some people make it out to be. The old VHS tapes make it seem like it was the dark ages!

Really surprised to see that American Airlines was flying A300s transatlantic - didn't think they had the range.

Fantastic video. Smoking in the terminal. High 8 on the queens building I see. The canadian plane looks a mess though. Which month did you shoot this in?

The only reason why I'm here is to find the United Airlines 747SP in the battleship grey livery.

Thanx for this upload. How ever, I´m looking for the two Boeing 737-200´s (or one of them) based at LHR flying for Virgin Express the summer of 1997. The planes were white, only marking was VIRGIN on the tail and VIRGIN EXPRESS on the fuselage. I´ve watched so many LHR-films from the 90´s now, but haven´t seen any Boeing 737-200 from Virgin Express. Yet. :) Their regs were **CH and **CG. ("Charlie Horrible" and "Charlie Good").

Not sure what that Canadian MD-11 was promoting but looks vandalised!

It's a DC-10 as Canadian or (CP air) known by its airline code never operated the MD-11.

    Which Terminal is this?

    • @kristopherdavidson2097
      @kristopherdavidson2097 2 роки тому

The first section is Terminal 3. (Largely unchanged except for the "food hall" upstairs. This is when Sbarro was operating there)
2:02 - Terminal 1 (building still exists but is idle).
5:14 - Terminal 1 mezzanine level (airline offices. Armed police would watch El Al check-in from here too)
8:12 - View from runway of Terminal 4's yellow jet bridges.
9:08 - Probably Terminal 1's airside gate area. Could be Terminal 2 as they were both ancient, but probably T1.

@@kristopherdavidson2097 Thank you! Shame there isn't much footage of the old terminal 2 out there - have used that terminal quite a lot from the mid 90's to early 2007.

@@pavelpolonskij6931 You're very welcome. Terminal 2 had a simple layout and a nice atmosphere. The new place is very much like a poorly equipped hospital.

@@kristopherdavidson2097 You're right. I've only used the new Terminal 2 several times (don't travel as much as I used to), but yeah - too big (I know it's for the passenger capacity), waiting for the lifts to the car park takes long etc.
