Very interesting, thank you. During the cultural revolution when Xi Jinping was a child, his family was discredited and Xi was sent for reeducation. I wonder if that experience motivates his quest for power. Sometimes his policies suggest he believes in the omnipotence of the CCP or the Chinese leader.
"discredited" and "reeducation" are overly mild words for what they did to him and his family.
I believe he is driven by vengeance against Mao but just Mao himself, and that is why he wants to erase/replace Mao's legacy

Thank you Don, your polite explanation of Xi’s erratic behaviour is giving Xi the credit for actually knowing what he is doing, but reality paints a different picture to non-Chinese people. We know that the ccp leaders are not chosen for their ability, just by there ruthlessness and cunning. Xi is where he is by trampling others beneath him. He is uneducated and without any modesty or morals. His goal is to maintain the ccp’s crushing grip on the people at any cost, even if it means starting a nuclear war. He does not care at all if millions of Chinese people die, there are plenty more.....

I've seen videos that show many shops that are closed. Big deal! In San Francisco, California, half the retail shops in the expensive Union Square area have closed. This is not good but it doesn't mean the US economy is collapsing.

there are many china doom porn channels around. For example China observer post videos daily saying everything closing down but I live in Beijing and it is still booming. There is high churn though and some shopping is moving online. Take popular places like Solana and Sanlitun in Beijing.......I have been in them in the past week and both were busier than ever with virtually ZERO closed units. Shanghai is the same. China is struggling in some ways eg real estate but the decline is being massively exaggerated on the anti china propaganda sites.
The US economy isn't collapsing but SF economy IS collapsing.
Yes, I would very much value a non ideological analysis of this type. I have studied China for many decades. The Wall Street analysis was always rosy, invest, outsource, the soft pedaled the many problems, real estate, corruption, overspend on infrastructure, shadow banking, debt burden with off balance sheet craziness. But the anti China analysts are just as bad. Empty malls, tofu dreg, car fires everywhere, it seems a dystopian landscape. I can get any news but cannot trust anyone anymore. Must it always be propaganda from this side of that??? I have lost trust even in the great think tanks and top consulting firms where I once worked. Everyone lies, nowadays. It's quite disturbing.

And PRC media aren't much help either. They are also lopsided one way or the other.
Some of us have work to do with China and we need to make decision and gauge things. There is almost zero available source that's just easy, quick, accurate, fair, and fact-based. It's either the greatest futurism country or collapsing wasteland. Both unrealistic.
As a disinterested observer, I associate Xi with poverty alleviation. Am I a victim of propaganda? The Chinese populace appears to have enjoyed am increase in living standards under his leadership.
