Five to seven days is a good window for banding squabs depending on the breed. Anything less than that and the band will fall off. Anything more than that and you risk not being able to band the bird with its proper breed sized band. I appreciated that you showed the various sized feet and leg proportions depending upon age. Very useful information for beginners.
My uncle used to replace the baby pigeons when they a few days old. He had a pair experienced parents and a pair of unexperienced fancy pigeons. He used to replace the babies of the fancy pigeons with yhe other ones to make sure the fancy pigeons survived. The pigeons laid on the babies and raised them and no problem. Thanks for the video anyway.
As long as both parents are there & the eggs are not put in a different box. They will not be rejected by their parents. I just had two hatched 4 days ago. Today took the Cock off so I can put some pine needles underneath the babies. So I picked up the babies & put them aside, while putting the pine needles under the nest to insure they will not get fay legs. The mother was there watching me. After I finished & put the babies back where they were , the mother got right back on them. No problem.
Baby pigeons are def one of the most adorable things in life. Had the opportunity to raise some myself and while they are beautiful as adult pigeons now, I miss their baby ugliness :P
Besides racing are there other reasons why people raise pigeons? Is it simply for the enjoyment and relaxation of a beautiful creation? I found a banded pigeon that is so sweet and loving and I am trying hard to find its owner on the national and international registries. So far no luck. I am for filling my responsibility to try to return it to its owner and to help it return to a mate if it has one, but if I am unsuccessful then I will be very happy to raise in love this bird. I already have a built-in aviary in my screen porch and I would like to know how to find a mate for him/her. I believe it is a female. I need to watch a few more videos about sexing them to know for sure.
brendametube I raise homers... I like to breed them for color as well as racing you could also put them in for judging in a fall fair which I'm going to do next year.. and yes, I agree, just sitting in the loft, watching them is quite relaxing.
No, it doesn't. Their toes/bones are still very flexible at this age and it doesn't hurt to put the band on or pull the back toe from underneath the band.
Nice video there I remember this .I love the part when you pick up the 1st day baby pigeon & mother picking on you.lol my birds did the same too me and wing slap me once in the eye.lol
thanks for the video, but don't you think that the band is upside down? some people told me that the number should be read by other people while I'm holding the bird, witch means that the numbers should be upside down in you situation right?
I was always told by racers to band at ten to fourteen days after hatch, and bands should barely stay on loose. I'm not criticizing, I'm just curious, because your bird did grow so large fast.
Can you help me please. I’m my father owns a bunch of pigeons and once in a while they completely abandon new borns before they even have a chance to feed them. I will do everything I can to try and get them to parent them but if it fails then I will take care of them as much as I can. I usually take care of 3 or four day olds with absolutely no problem but the new borns hatching are very tough and I don’t know what to feed them to substitute pigeon crop milk. I need a recipe or something that is a very reliable product. I used kaytee but they grew very very slowly and they still passed even though I followed the directions to the T. Can you please help me.
That's pretty neat using a pencil I normally just grab a feather and use the end of a Feather just grab a flight feather or tail feather and I have the long end on it and I put it between the back toe and pull it through either way the job will get done nice video
It does look like it is hurting them, but He really isn't. They ban them to identify them. And usually they ban them to let others know that those are his birds and so others cannot steal them. People who race them will ban them.
I understand why breeders have to band the birds, but I always remove them with a clipping tool after I get them as pets. They always cause trouble when the birds are old are getting stuck on stuff.
You always band a baby with an adult size band because once it's on, you never take it off again. You can't band an adult pigeon with an official band, that must be done when they're a baby (as you see in the video, a closed band only fits over the foot when they're just a few days old), you can buy rings that you can open/close around the leg, but they're no official bands with a number on, you can have them customized with your phone number though.
For homers you can order them from the American Racing Pigeon Union, you can have them custom made (can get em on ebay) you can get them from the National Pigeon Association as well for other breeds. And breeds sometimes have corresponding clubs.
It's to identify the bird. Each band has a unique number so you can tell the birds apart (pigeons with the same feather pattern pretty much all the same), to be able to race the bird (a pigeon must have this kind of unremovable leg band to participate in official pigeon races) and to find the owner if the pigeon ever gets lost (not sure if this is the case in all countries, but in my country, you can enter the number on the leg band on a website and it tells you the phone number of the owner so you can contact the owner). 9100 is part of the number of the bird's leg band, it has more numbers on the other side which you can't see in the video.
@PiNkBuNnIeSDuH wrong, its just that maybe the mother is just sensitive and scared, my pigeons i've had i had been touching it alot to see if it would hatch, and the mother and father still sit on the eggs i think the one u see is just like that because maybe their in the wild alot so then they never really see much human aroun

Thank you, I love pigeons so much. This was very educational for me.

Well. You can raise them for meat, or the eggs are quite tasty, or just to raise pigeons.
Great hobby .i was ringing pigeons and canaries today.but you could ring pigeons with your eyes clossed compared to canaries .nice video all the same.
Very nice video 📹 👍
What size ring in mm?
I find it fascinating how they can grow that fast.. how much do they have to eat in a day?
Just saw a brown/white pigeon with a blue band on one leg and a green one on the other on its own outside. Should I be concerned?
50 years of pigeon farming, I have Never banded a baby past 3 days and have never had one drop a band.
fantastic video,i normally ring mine at about 6/7 days old but some are still a bit small at that age.
for some reason at 1:55 when the mom got scared made me laugh XD
sorry I pasted this comment before i was taught about pigeons by my dad

How is that the Pigeons right foot though I’m looking at My right hand and from where I’m standing that leg Your banding looks like the left?
wow very informative, never seen a baby pigeon in my life haha
what do you feed the parents because the baby gros to fast for that age i mean it to big for that age
dont know what size band you have but after 5 or 6 days its almost impossable to put a band on a baby bird
Does this hurt his toes? It looks like it would, but he wasn’t crying out or moving much so I guess not. But how does it work?
No, it doesn't. Their toes/bones are still very flexible at this age and it doesn't hurt to put the band on or pull the back toe from underneath the band.

thanks for the video, but don't you think that the band is upside down? some people told me that the number should be read by other people while I'm holding the bird, witch means that the numbers should be upside down in you situation right?

Are you using 8mm or 10 mm rings for the pigeons.
I was always told by racers to band at ten to fourteen days after hatch, and bands should barely stay on loose. I'm not criticizing, I'm just curious, because your bird did grow so large fast.
I believe it depends on breed as well or where one loft may have a method for fast growing birds others may not.

@Pitakhh depends on the type of pigeon. I would suggest 6 months is mature
Does the mother feed its babies or do we have to feed them? How? What do baby pigeons eat?
The mother feeds it
The mother provides milk in its crop
just wow 💙💙

It does look like it is hurting them, but He really isn't. They ban them to identify them. And usually they ban them to let others know that those are his birds and so others cannot steal them. People who race them will ban them.
