Hey guys, we have just bought a boat and will be keeping her just outside Victoria. We’re on a very similar trajectory to you as we’ve not really sailed much before and now have a 36’ steel boat we will call ‘Norm’!! Only seen the boat virtually but it’s perfect for our needs. Watching your videos from the start and loving seeing your progression. I’m down in NZ at the moment with work but will be back in July hopefully to start our liveaboard adventures around the PNW. Sailing a 420 dinghy at the moment to try and understand sail trip and boat balance.
Ah awesome! We are actually also looking at a steel boat to purchase- you will see why as you get closer to the current videos. 36 feet seems like a decent sized boat to be learning on. Shoot us a message when you get here. We love to connect with other sailors! Waywardlifesailing@gmail.com
8.50 Yeah, right, the best about sailing is the moment, when you cut off the engine and the boat heals a bit and starts moving on her own with only the sounds of the wind in the sails and the water slushing alongside the hull. That's as near to heaven as you can get before you're dead.
How is it possible? Buying and operating a boat without any knoledge? What about safety? COLREG? As a professional merchant mariner I can say - you guys make A LOT of troubles for us and put yourself in huge! risk. Othewise - sweet video and good music on the background lol
We didn’t have zero knowledge. We had zero experience on a sailboat. Big difference. And like we said, we got a friend who was a sailing instructor to bring the boat over with us and after that we did a 5 day sailing course before taking it out on our own. We both had boating licenses and had learned how to use the sails on our boat before taking the sailboat out on our own, plus experience we had with power boats before this and all the research we did on currents etc in the areas we visited before visiting them, using proper rules of the “road” while out on the water, etc. But I know exactly what you mean about people with no experience out on the water, and i think people should need a lot more as far as qualifications than they do to take a boat out, especially in areas of big current. People greatly underestimate the danger out on the ocean and I very much empathize with your position.
Vancouver looks so peaceful from the waters.
That smile, he looks so happy
Logan or the dog? haha

I can feel how chilly that crossing was from my comfy living room brrrrr
We were very grateful for the layers, that's for sure!

Agreed. That’s the moments dreams are made of
