    Great video. I hope these (EP sailboat) continue to be regular episodes. I’m 14 years into a SolidNav inboard EP system and love seeing new systems come onboard. Thanks.

    This was really encouraging to watch as I am in the middle of an electric conversion for my Contessa 32. I've watched a few of your previous videos and always pick up some great tips, thanks for sharing.

    Hi ! SO INSPIRING looking at your video... Even emotional :)
    We're your parent's age, we had more time to understand what living free is... Congrats !!!
    We're actually building our future floating home and I was woondering the weight and flaoting deep line of your boat ? It would help me in my calculations! Thanks in advance and wish to meet you someday when we go in BC :)

    Your living the dream plus now you can sail with no more anxiety about where and when to drop anchor. ⛵️

    it's better to have your maximum motoring speed below hull speed, otherwise your wasting tons of power pushing into the bow-wave .... better to be at just sq. root. LWL than X 1.34

    Hi, love the 3 vids ! Can you do regen on that boat while sailing ? If you can’t, would it be a lot of works to install the regen capability ?
    How much energy could we expect from regen ? (I assume it would be in function of the boat speed)

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  Рік тому +1

      Yes for sure, we've covered this in some of the videos of the Shamrock conversion and on the endless-sphere thread. With the standard stock sailboat propellers the regen seems to top out at around 100-150 watts depending on the wind speed, if you attempt to pull more power than that via the controller then the propeller stops spinning.

    Wondering why the heavy dependence on motor power in this video when you have sail. I never saw the jib being used even when you were reaching. A 32' sloop rig should have a hull speed of over 7 knots. You should achieve about 6 knots on a broad reach in a fair breeze. I don't sail there so are the winds that flakey and the lee shores and shoals so bad that constant motorpower is necessary? In my experience, on the east coast-Long Island Sound to Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard, I was powered primarily by sail (sloop rig) and only started the engine if I was totally becalmed or to motor up to the dock.

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  2 роки тому +2

      Hey Rik, they were in the process of installing salvaged furling jib on the boat not long before this trip but it wasn't ready to deploy, so that's why it was just the main sail during the crossing, which alone would just get ~2 knots in these super light winds. Hence the use of the motor otherwise it would have been painfully slow. With normal breezes and with both sails it goes just fine at 6+ knots and there is no need motor.

      @rik999 2 роки тому +1

      @@GrinTechnologies When your sailing rig is operational, I would like to know how much wattage you can harvest from windmilling your prop at different points of sail i.e. running, reaching or close hauled. Sail has a lot power, I've towed a fair sized power boat that had engine trouble at 3-4 knots back to harbor.

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  2 роки тому +1

      @@rik999 I'm expecting upwards of 150 watts in good wind but I'll check in with Toni to see if she saw on the trip North. She made it up to the Broughton's several weeks ago and had the foresail install finished while here in Vancouver.

    Can you please post a link for the specific motor used in this conversion?

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  4 місяці тому

      It was an experimental motor build that we did, converting a 3T 45mm stator which would normally have a KV of 12 rpm/V into a delta winding with a KV of 21 rpm/V. It's not something available for sale.

    Is it possible to get some ballpark amounts of how much the conversion cost?

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  Рік тому

      In the realm of $2000 for the motor and controller electronics, and then anywhere from 4K to 12K on batteries depending on your source and how many kWhr you get

  • @mscir

    Do you cool the motor?

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  2 роки тому +1

      In this case no the motor is running without statorade and without any outside fans and you can see from the CA display screen that in steady state it's fairly toasty (~110 oC). This is to establish a benchmark for the performance without any mods, and we then plan to see how much cooler it operates with statorade and then statorade + fins when Toni is back in the neighborhood again.
