I love Debbie Allen...always have. I missed seeing the episode. I think Gwen was great...she was close to 60 yrs old at the time of this - just amazing .
OMG!!!!!!!! Gwen Verdon and Debbie Allen! How on earth did I miss this when it was on the show?! And no, she is not Patrick Swayze's mother. She was in a lot lot of Bob Fosse's shows, she was married to him and was his muse till his death. A legend in her own right!
Thank God for television!! Since musical films have been on the decline essentially since the 1970's, it is this medium (and in particular this episode with dance veteran Gwen Verdon) which gives us a great marriage of the classic musical era with the new- although 'new' is relative since this IS 26 years ago. Love the 1:44 moment when Ms. Verdon, traveling with Ms. Allen, tosses the Fosse hat into the air and lets go completely. Sass and class indeed.
Gwen and Debbie both had ties to Bob Fosse. Gwen was his Former Second Wife, whom he worked with in D@mn Yankees with "Who's Got The Pain" while Debbie like Ben Vereen, Liza Minelli and Ann Reinking was one of Bob's Many Proteges. With the Hat it was like they were paying Homage to Bob Fosse from Dancin', or "All That Jazz". No wonder he influenced future Singers like Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul and Beyoncé. We saw it on Motown 25, Coldhearted Snake and Single Ladies.
If you don't know who Gwen Verdon is you don't know dance. She was Bob Fosse's wife and partner (ok, one of many partners but his main partner). She originated many of his most known characters. Think Lola from Damn Yankees.
WOW...this is AWESOME..I don't remember this scene...I don't remember too much form the show at all... so many good moment...but I gotta love Ms. Verdon locking @ 1:33 and the part with them odoing the leg swivels beginning at 1:53
I Love Debbie. I admire you so much!!!! Oh by the way I had a friend by the name Alice. She looked so much like you i use to call her Debbie Allen. lol
@smelharri OMG! Gwen Verdon = the Damned Yankees as Lola (there's a clip of her in it on YT"whatever Lola wants Lola gets" & also doing a dance scene with Bob Fosse (her husband), she was Bob Fosse's muse until the day that he died. Original BW cast of Sweet Charity, as Charity, Original BW cast of Chicago, as Roxy Hart. VERY fabulous lady. Broadway actually dimmed its lights when she died. just a mention, if you want to see Fosse do his own choreography look up sss Snake in the grass
They should show this clip as text-book, HOW TO FILM DANCE, even on tv shows that are all about dance, SYTYCD and ABDC they are guilty of "camera gymnastics" and unfortunate editing. You'd think people would see that the DANCE is what we are supposed to be seeing NOT the camera work!!!
Gwen and Debbie together! This clip is a true treasure! Thank you for posting it wow! Such an important part of our history!
both fabulous ladies !
I...LOVE....THIS!!! Two dancing greats together! Who will fill their shoes today? Or should I ask, who CAN fill their shoes today?

These two together are a real pleasure to watch. Isn't it funny how Beyonce's single ladies has some "Fosse" moves in it?
Gwen had it even in her 60's here.
damn they can move. I love this clip.

Uh...seriously WHO in hell's kitchen voted a thumbs DOWN on this???
lol. those pants.
You'll never see dancing like this on the BET Awards. They would rather gyrate etc and call that dancing
that is dancing
DEBBIE ALLEN is the Bruce Lee of "Dance"

Evalution? Evolution
@bennymaslov I know, right??? It's a shame. This is dance. Beyonce-ites need to take a lesson.
