I think it was harsh to crush his dreams like that, but at least she was preparing him for it. In fact, it would also have been cruel to get his hopes up, so when he graduated, he would expect to get picked up by a major dance company, but he never actually would.
The same scene plays out in the original movie only with a female dancer, who also considers killing herself. The teacher is not a crap teacher. A crappy teacher would have let the kid keep on thinking he's good, then he goes on auditions & gets laughed at. The point of teachers is not to pat kids on the head &tell them they r great when they just aren't. Especially a teacher at a performing arts school. Their job is to prepare them for life in new York city, Broadway & people who will laugh in their face if they suck or are even just mediocre
In the 1980 movie the teacher didn't even let Lisa, the student, graduate as a dance major. She kicked her out of the major, and Lisa decides to switch to drama, although it's not clear if she does... in the end, Lisa sings wonderfully in the final performance, so maybe she switched to a music major?
