    I don't know about everyone else in the comments, but the fact Derren got 5k out of Ben's bank and he didn't notice between the event happening and the show suggests he could probably afford to lose 5k anyway. Christ if £5 is missing from my account I notice it.

    As a person who went through a bout of gambling addiction, mostly blackjack and roullette, I can totally appreciate what Derren did here. No matter how good you are, gambling is gambling. You can lose 5k just like that, confidence means nothing.

      @@missengineer2782 Same here. In comparison to his more recent shows which are more remarkable , this was pretty lame. Though I guess it’s his early shows. But this to me was staged. (The motorway ‘trick’ is possible, but it would take an incredible amount of knowledge and practice which I doubt he did with such a short time period for a one off show piece for Tim Westwood 😆) For one the guy who’s money was stolen seemed extremely wooden in his acting. Watching an evening show (probably aired at 9pm) and just so happens to be in a freshly ironed shirt, jeans and shoes (not something a man would wear around the house and definitely not while relaxing to watch a show he was ‘hypnotised’ to watch - so no ‘maybe he was going out’. Also any money won would of had to be returned on the basis of carrying such cameras.
      Maybe I’m thinking too much into it, but he was well prepared (or purposely), to NOT hit the winning number to play into the grander scheme of his image towards the public audience as he was still growing in reputation, and to give a more trusting awe of genuineness in all he will do upcoming. No doubt they would work and why that he set it all up just for such an anti climax (albeit funny) if it wasn’t for a the bigger picture.

      @@Allegro_Giusto Excellent points. This was not a legit casino. I work in the industry & have travelled to dozens (maybe 100's) of casinos. Not even close to a proper roulette setup, no pit boss or house observer present, & the dealers chip tills were all kinds of amatuer & out of wack. This ain't a main pit at a big casino, nor a high roller lounge. It was a sketchy underground dive or.... it was fake.

    I'm glad Derren did this, it's very smart indeed. He won even though you'd think he lost. He's basically made people think twice about gambling and put people off rather than win once and encourage or promote gambling. The audience wants him to win and it'll be great, losing is the reality of life gambling. Well done Derren.

      @@GWOAT I am 99% sure it was faked. Practically everything Derren does is fake and he admits it. Elsewhere in this thread yesterday I posted where there is a supposed "camera glitch" where it actually goes black allowing him to splice in recorded footage. He faked it, in my view because he wanted to show the country the true casino experience, going in prepared to win, expecting to win, and coming out a loser. All he had to do was hire a casino when they had shut and have "extras" turn up and record it all without sound. They could add the sound using sound effects later in the studio. I am just amazed some actually think it was "real" as shown. Even Derren admitted at the beginning it uses magic tricks misdirection and showmanship It was essentially Derren doing an "anti gambling" advert.

His methods would work for people in different countries as well as in the UK. There are Mentalists all over the world, who work in many different languages, but I'd happily say that globally, Derren is the gold standard for this generation. Has me consider that with that train of thought, what about those Derren's out there who aren't as public... what they use these skills for and to which degree play influence to broader audiences unaware... His episode with the spirit of the dead contact dude, Joe... just begs to think what is going on out there. I came across this video on YT where I was certain the guy was utilizing some of these techniques to promote himself, quite the channel of tripe he had behind him. Aaron Doughty I believe it was... rather freaked me out...

In fact, even today, I turn on one of the many 'lifestyle' channels and watch people using the same skills that Derren has mastered to con, trick and manipulate people and positioned in good faith. Derren is a master at what he does, there's nobody better. But Derren is, has always been and will always be, an entertainer. One of the best.

    Point 1 - You can't hypnotise people like that and you can't make them do things that they wouldn't normally do (like give away significant sums of money).
    Point 2 - Derren "losing" is supposed to be the focal point here and we're supposed to remember that. It's meant to take our focus off how unbelievable it is that he can randomly hypnotise people to do... whatever!
    Point 3 - Derren's camera shows a blackjack dealer who handles chips and then at the end, doesn't show that his hands are empty (ie: he hasn't stolen any chips for himself) by turning his palms upwards. This is not a real casino.
    So, everyone then thinks this is "real," because if it were staged, Derren would obviously have won, right? But it IS staged and it's staged to make us believe that ALL of it is real and by "ALL of it," I'm really only talking about the hypnosis part. If we accept that all of it is real, then we've accepted the hypnosis bull-poop part as real as well, and that's the whole purpose of this show/ episode. Once Derren has established his super-powers of hypnosis in this manner, then following episodes that use this bull-poop, fantasy twaddle will be accepted as genuine too, because we all remember that time when Derren lost $5,000- of someone else's money, right?
    In other words, the whole point of this episode is to prime us to believe that hypnosis can do things that it can't really do. Everything else is misdirection, reinforcement and entertainment. That being said, this was fantastically entertaining and Derren Brown is a master magician and a true showman. I hope to continue to see more wonderfully entertaining episodes like this one.
    nb: Even if I knew nothing about hypnosis, I know a good deal about what people will do for money. I've been to a lot of casino's around the world and the one thing they seem to have in common is that casino's everywhere require their employes to show their palms (palms UP) to the overhead cameras after distributing chips. ESPECIALLY when handling high denomination chips like the $500- ones Derren requested. This is required of them so that the casino can know that they are not palming chips. At 44:21, in the top right hand part of the screen, we can see the "dealer" counting out the chips and passing them to Derren. His hands are visible at all times and at no point does he turn his palms upwards. This alone tells me that they are not in a real casino. Combining that with what I know about hypnosis, led me to the conclusion written above.

    This was Derren's worst show ever, not because he failed but because he called someone a loser who he recognized as having a low self-esteem and then gave those negative feelings affirmation by setting her up to lose. I can't believe he did that... There's no sugar coating it. That didn't in any way help her change her attitude. He just bullied her on national television.
    I usually respect what he does but that was some cocky, cold-hearted bullshit. And he always talks about how much he was bullied and called names when he was a kid... Shameful!!!

    • @sfdntk
      @sfdntk 2 роки тому +1

      The reason he did that was because it was required by the trick. No matter who ended up with the £20, Derren was always going to claim that's how it was supposed to go. When Maz ended up with the £20 the trick ends with the winner winning and the loser losing, but if Richard had ended up with the money then he would have finished the trick by telling Maz that she's not really a loser, she just has to think positively and good things will happen, and then she would have ended up with the £20. Being mean to her was setting the audience up to feel really good about the ending if Richard had ended up with the right matchbox.

    • @iloveallthepeople
      @iloveallthepeople Рік тому

      No, there's no reason to sugarcoat it. Like he said, take risks and you gain rewards more often than those who don't. The opportunities themselves become events that you are lucky to have. Where the adverse point of view sees a burden to be avoided. How nice would he be to reinforce the idea that having a crap attitude pays off as often as a positive attitude?

    Starts off with Derren sat in a TV trailer. Outside the guy's place are two TV trailers. He has to ignore the first and enter the second. What's in the first one if not Derren sat providing live commentary? The doors on the back were closed on that one too, to hide what's inside. You don't take two to a site for shooting if you don't use both OBUs (Outside broadcast units).
    There were no satellite dishes visible outside the vans, so how did they receive the 'live' feed from /mainland Europe'?
    25:40 "I can hear you but I can't see you' then at 25:48 he responds to a visual cue 'There you go, so...' when Ben turns to see the open doors, and Derren seems to catch himself.
    C4 doesn't usually broadcast stuff that has it's gut drop on the floor.
    What was Derren really up to? Retiring to a quieter existence after this so goes out by letting people feel they shouldn't follow him or believe in him? Derren?

    wow so many people are completely missing the point here. Darren Brown miss the number by 1 slot. To me, that is an amazing remarkable feat. This demonstrates that Darren Brown is a human being and he still can make mistakes. Yet even by being off by 1 slot in its first try demonstrate a skill that an average person can never achieve in their lifetime. Don't forget he predicted the cars speed and the number that the tennis ball that will land. Those skills, are not something an average person can ever do. Yet he still able to do time.
    We live in a society where people wants things to be perfect every single time. When someone makes a mistake they cry out and complains about not being a success. Even when he succeeded there still a lot of people that is being unhappy. They will find the flaws and miss everything else that has been shown to them. That very negative moment overwrite every other achievement that has been made up to that point.
    You can't ever win with critics about anything. You are dammed if you do. You are dammed if you don't. In this show, he demonstrated some absolute remarkable skills. It is something that we should take consider. Yes, he failed the big moment. Yet he is going to refund everything to that men. This demonstrates that they are taking responsibility for the people livelihood.

    Derren "missed" because the show did not want to pay the guy £175,000. The whole casino sequence is 100% staged, either at a phony casino or one that allowed him to film there with no real betting taking place. Derren just had to film the same bit over and over again until it came up 30 or 23 which actually wouldn't take that long as the odds are 1 in 18 of hitting either of those numbers, so, they had to film that sequence probably 50 times at an absolute maximum. It's a win-win for Derren and the producers... he LOOKS like he can predict the section, but does not have to pay out the $$$. If you DO believe that was a "live shot" and he really did get that close, or can even get remotely close to predicting where the ball will land, you must also believe Dude Perfect hit all their shots on the first attempt. Love Derren, but this was unusually weak for him.

    • @Hic_Rhodus
      @Hic_Rhodus 6 років тому +6

      Exactly! At least one comment finally hits it on the head! ... It's completely obviously that the end bit is staged just as much as any "win" is staged in any of his other tricks. Derren's one great contribution to entertainment magic over the last decade & a half (like Penn and Teller), has been to shift attention from the out-of-fashion "misdirection by focusing on the final pay-off" to the more interesting "misdirection by focusing on supposedly telling you how he is doing the misdirection". But you can still work Derren's real intentions out by simply focusing on the show's stage-directions: because neither Derren nor the others are that great at acting. The final silent, "pan-away" closing of this whole "bit" shows that they had already planned how to heighten the effect of Derren's "near-miss". And then not only does Derren not have to pay out... but he invests that loss by taking the psychological kudos from it into future tricks and heightening the supposed jeopardy for those later audiences!

      @user-987ki34t 6 років тому +17

      So, because the average person isn’t great at maths and can’t make fairly accurate predictions based on the factors mentioned, that means it’s staged?
      As for them “not wanting to pay the guy £175,000,” do you really think that kind of money would make the slightest bit of difference to C4? I can’t believe I watched deal or no deal for years, no knowing C4 staged the whole thing because they obviously won’t be willing to pay £250,000 if they aren’t willing to lose £175,000.

    What a strange show! Derren Brown is a great illusionist, but let me explain a few things (SPOILERS):
    1. Derren Brown did not influence anyone in what spray can they chose nor what matchbox they selected. Those are basic magic tricks that are great, but do not depend on what can or matchbox anyone selects.
    2. Derren did not predict the speed of the cars. Someone else was clocking the speed and communicating that to Derren so that he could correctly state it.
    3. Derren did not hypnotize Ben, nor get 5K from his bank account. When we see Ben on the phone through the window in the brilliantly-lit room, perfectly-framed through the window, this is a shot set up well in advance with Ben (likely not his real name).
    4. Derren was not outside of the UK. The casino is a set. Since they could not afford to build a full casino, they had to go the hidden camera (bad reception helped, too) route to block that they did not have a full, well-attended casino. The absurdity of the balcony looking virtually straight down on the roulette wheel is a good tell.
    5. The trick is supposed to work just like the squash court trick with magnets that basically eject the ball from unfriendly slots but attract it to the one slot you want. This is imperfect (clearly), but done right can work surprisingly well. Sadly, the biggest danger is that the ball will fall into an adjacent slot but be pulled by the magnet to the edge of the desired slot. You can clearly see that this is what happens. The ball, defying gravity, is stuck hard against the upper right ridge of the 30-slot, pressed toward the 8-slot by the magnetic pull, but had no energy to roll over into the slot.
    6. It is likely that they did do the trick live, and because the ball and wheel are rigged, you can't do it again because the only selectable number is 8. It probably works 19 times out of 20, but it is not perfect.
    I LOVE DERREN BROWN, but he is an illusionist, not someone who can calculate speed, trajectory, and figure out the make of a ru-of-the-mill speeding car based on its sound.

    • @daryarama
      @daryarama 3 роки тому

      Actually.. watching the video for the first time, but after few videos of Darren.
      Watch the paint part again and listen to what he says. "First can".. "second can".. "last one"
      That what she did. And that what written after
      For car part, choose a spot before the road speed sign and you can guess what speed the car would drive in perspective to the sign. And as it's UK roads, he's taken a car on "outside" overtaking lane, but knowing there is an upcoming speed sign, he knew the car will slow down. Make of the car could be a factor as well. Who drives a Ford 🤣 responsible people..

      Finally, someone who gets it! Derren is a great illusionist and Britain’s greatest living showman, but a lot of what he does are magic tricks, not psychological manipulation. People are trying to find some higher level of psychological manipulation in his mistake. All it is is that he fucked up a magic trick on live TV. I’m even surprised they put this one online.

  • @MultiJejje

    I think there would be some legal problems if he wins 175k. Casinos have some crazy rules and they didn't want to win because of that. Derren missed it on purpose 100% sure. Plus I'm not convinced he made this bet live. Could be pre-recorded also. They can't risk it being live if casino security spots those cameras or there is some technical problems.

    • @izzaduck8896
      @izzaduck8896 6 років тому +18

      Yes! Too risky for Derren to actually place the bet, film it, win and then put it on air. The casino management would soon work out what had happened and Derren would have been banned from ALL casinos in Europe. Casinos in the USA ban players for 'counting cards' and winning "too much" at Black Jack.

    • @Adara007
      @Adara007 6 років тому +8

      Derren stated, at the start of one of his televised shows - maybe about luck? - that he has been banned from many Casinos in the UK. He used to "sneak" into them, beginning at age 16, and use his astounding memory (techniques), ability to 'read' people, and finely honed card counting skills to win games like Black Jack. It'd be interesting to know what happened to cause many UK Casinos to ban Derren from their premises!

    In the time of "CORONAVIRUS WORLD WAR - 3" in 2020 when your own life is at the hands of a invisible pandemic it's watching Derren Brown perform amazing mind games as well as demonstrating odds of probability that breaks all barriers and provides solace and entertainment in the confines of home.Amazing.

    So I was literally thinking halfway through the episode that "of COURSE he's gonna make it... I still wanna see it, but they obviously wouldn't have the show if he didn't!" And then I got to the ending... Lmao! XD

    33:32 @DerernBrown I know it's very old now but you forgot one thing... I positioning of the fingers and what they are doing as the ball is thrown... this can affect the "spin" which in turn would deternine which direction the ball goes in AFTER is makes contact with the wall.. For example I can hit a pool ball on a pool table in to the cush on a slight angle and make that ball come back to me on that same angle as opposed to it bouncing off in the oppostie direction (as standard physics would allow it to to if the ceu ball was hit with the tip of the cue in the "centre" of the ball)...
    Long story short: *you forgot about the "spin"* 😉
