Yes but he wasn't a finisher. And that's why Islam is better over all. His grappling is effective and his striking is effective! Unlike khabib, I've never imagined khabib knocking out anyone. Yes, he can wrestle beat them, but all of us had this doubt that he can't really stand toe to toe with any striker!

Islam may outstrike Khabib in stand up but Khabib has incredible chin. Fight ends up on the ground where the two will battle each other. Khabib's cardio is top notch, Islam too is elite but Khabib's pressure is on another level. Khabib wins by decision.

Sparring is very different than an actual fight. In sparring you are not really willing to hurt, especially if the other one is training for an upcoming fight. Winning in sparring is not always an indication.

Imo, Khabib was better fighter, Islam is more complete and talented mixed martial artist. Islam has opportunity to have amazing resume, which is what most of Khabib's detractors point to as a negative for Khabib. So that is a good thing. Happy for Islam and Khabib awesome.

Actually a good point. He is also as active as as you can hope a champ to be, two fights a year. Despite that people try to portray him as an inactive champ.

This is just my creative input, but I’ve always viewed Khabib & Islam as Hashirama & Tobirama Senju of the MMA realm.
Khabib's wrestling, physicality and agility is miles ahead of islam but Islam has better striking and has more variety with his takedown, but he's not as physical as khabib.
One thing about Islam is he always look for the submission and has decent striking and power. But I'll still lean with khabib by decision because khabib doesn't jus look for submissions, he smash you with ground and pound once he took you down.

The thing about measuring greatness by title defences is that different fighters have different paths to the belt. Anderson Silva only had a couple of fights before his reign so everything thereafter was a defence. More modern fighters have longer careers to get to the belt.

Islam opponents were better also. For starters, Islam beat the featherweight goat twice. Beat Charles Oliveira. Those two alone are better than pretty much all of khabib's opponents. He'll surpass Khabib in title defences too. You brought that argument of "paths to the belt", but islam had to fight 13 times in the UFC to get to the belt while khabib fought 10 times. Imo its pretty undeniable at this point that Islam is just better.

Skill wise Islam, from the visual perspective. But if they really fight, I will choose Khabib every time.
islam will likely pass khabib in terms of legacy, but skill wise khabib will likely stay on top because that is how dominant his grappling was. islam is the much more well rounded fighter, but makes you wonder if mma fighters should train to become well rounded or just dump their skill points all into grappling

Well, after Islams win over Porier yesterday. In my opinion, Khabib is the better counter part. Khabib would force you to the cage, take you down, and smother you against that same cage. Giving you no chance to breathe.
Islams willingness to be good everywhere is the same thing that gets him into trouble. Engaging with people on the feet too much, allowing fighters to have a chance and make the fight competitive. As where Khabib would only utilize his striking to grapple, Islam will genuinely try to finish you standing which is why we are so many close fights with Islam.
But at the end of the day, it’s down to opinion.
i think you are correct but you see with islam we also get to see a whole fight. I mean i knew islam would win over dustin but seeing the fight drag to 5 rounds and then getting a finish was just too good. i get what you mean when you say thats what gets him in trouble but that is also what give us fan an exhilirating feeling. for me personally islam's fight are more interesting and fun to watch than khabib because of the versatility

I can't decide who will win but I think Islam prefers to try new things which sometimes makes his opponents breathe a little easier which makes me very nervous when watching him fight. but very different from Khabib he doesn't waste any time continuing to pressure his opponents, I just see a bear in a cage that never bleeds and is ready to prey on his opponents
Who is a better fighter... it's a matter of nature I believe, they're two unique characters. Islam's nature maybe similar to Khabib but his instinct & 'fire' will always be filtered thru his reserved personality, he had to learn and break out of that thru experience and study. Whereas Khabib's intensity and dominance seemed very instinctual and free expression of himself.. his mindset & drive is unwavering because it's built-in to his core already. In combat, Khabib's nature sets him apart from the onset.. his natural bent is perfect for this sport. If these 2 fight each other in competition Khabib will have his edge but Islam will put up a good fight.
Many people credit Khabib for Islam's success.. but if you'll consider it Islam also in turn needs to be credited as part of Khabib's evolution. These two pushed and pulled at each other's strings since their formative combat career.. it's inevitable they've contributed immensely to each others success .

Well put. Islam gives a Charles' vibe. The one who struggles to get where he is but is always improving. The fact that he can be hurt shows that he doesn't rely on his chin and physical abilities as other fighters, he is truly a student of the game.
Islam is a more well-rounded fighter but Khabib is Khabib. He doesn't need to be the best at striking nor kicking when he brings down his opponent for 80% of the game and spends that time mauling them. You can watch their fights independently and you will realize Khabib was just more dominant in every fight. Not once could anyone dispute whether Khabib won, nor even engage in such a discussion to begin with. The only dispute in his career is Round 3 in UFC 229 against McGregor, the round he officially lost, and some people still say he didn't lose it. But there is no round he won that was disputed, really.
I think after Islam’s performance, we can see khabib’s ground game, top control, and pressure is second to none🙌

I think they are both just different fighters that have two very different mentalities when approaching fights. I think Islams biggest issue is that he feels the need (whether he realizes it or not) to outdo Khabib, and that causes him to put himself in more danger and take more risks.

Islam and Khabib are fundamentally different in terms of fighting style. Even in terms of personality, you can see it reflected in their fighting style.
Khabib might be a nice guy, but he's gruff, very straight forward, a bit abrasive when he's comfortable around people. He SMASHES people when he fights them and his take down attempts are very rough, but effective. You can say the same about his striking. Rough, not exactly textbook, but effective for his style.
Islam...he's very elusive. Even when he's speaking to people, he's elusive. Despite speaking slower, he's more refined as well in terms of how he talks to people. He glides into submissions a lot more when he fights people. His takedowns are much more refined. His striking, more refined(not super elite yet, but much more refined in comparison to Khabib).
I hope that makes sense. It's interesting how you can get an idea of a fighter's fighting style by really understanding them as a person. Strickland(ironically), Costa, Izzy, Dustin, Eddie, and so on.

Khabib’s fight IQ and reaction timing was just out of this world IMO, I dont even know if he had an iron chin as much as he rarely ever got solidly hit because of these two things. On top of that he had a tremendous amount of knowledge and technique when it came to wrestling that I think Islam is only now getting closer to, Islam is stronger and has better striking so with experience he could have a similar fight IQ to Khabib but the fact that he still gets hit a lot shows that he would probably lose to Khabib still IMO. I think people forget how rare it was for Khabib to ever even get hit, like clean shots were not a thing on him.
