Thank you for putting this video I really learn a lot, your video help me a lot I was going to buy one but after I watch your videos I saved about $145 after grease my valve works very great!! Didn’t spend any money thanx for this video👍🏼👍🏼
Nice video. Noticed today after getting the pool set up for this year that the valve will only work on filter and recirc. The other settings do nothing (everything worked last year). If I push down the lever as if changing to another setting, the filter backwashes (even at filter or recirc setting)... any ideas? Have not taken it apart yet.
@@catatonicable Thanks for reply. Turned out to be user error. Had the hoses switched at the filter. Luckily it didn't break anything. And I looked the whole thing over more than once and still missed it.
I’ve got a new Hayward 18. At times the selector was hard to turn. Then started leaking out the waste. I saw that they put a black plastic “spinner” in the waste port. I found out you have to replace the gasket but on the new models they glued the gasket on so you have to buy the whole part. As a temp fix I put a shut off valve on it. Worked great then the valve would not close. Culprit? The black spinner in the waste port preventing the valve from closing all the way. Makes me wonder if the spinner damaged the spider gasket? Unless there a good reason to keep it, I’m going remove it.
@@Marksreviewsandtutorials I took it out and now can’t find it. It looked like a little black tripod stand and sat in the waste port. Maybe it was a part that was meant to be taken out at some point, IDK. It did cause me to think I had a defective ball valve on the waste, so bought a new one, so now I have a spare. I bought a new spider gasket, it’s black not white and is a little smaller. Not sure if it will fit but I might give it a go seeing how I would have to replace the whole part anyway. They made replacement more expensive and time consuming, really strange.
Thanks. We watched it all the way through. I liked the safety boots ;) We have a very old Jacuzzi 17FMA Sand Filter (30 + years ... built with original house) that is leaking out the Backwash. As a last attempt to save it (I understand sand filters get better with age) I am going to take off the Valve head this weekend. This requires a grinder to saw off the rusted bolts. Have you seen this old Filter ? would you recommend I continue on this project ? I figure it will be a cool experiment for me and my 8 year old son and if we are lucky we fix it.
Hi Mark, thanks for the videos. Our Hays sand filter handle is currently stuck near the waste water setting (not fully locked in). The handle is totally jammed an not moving. I've switched the isolation valve from the skimmer to closed, and the intention is to disassemble the top of the filter tomorrow. Do I need to do anything additional before removing the top of the filter? Your videos already have it removed from the actual body of the filter.
***PLEASE HELP***Hey Mark, appreciate you sharing your knowledge of valve repair so very much! I have a Hayward Vari-Flo top valve sand filter, model S220T, and a previous home owner had tightened one of the 6 screws on the top that holds the vari-flo valve down to the valve body too tight, and it won’t tighten down. How can I fix that one screw hole? The valve is one that splits at the top, and the screws go down into the valve body, so there’s no nut they tighten into. I’d so appreciate any idea you can give me? Even putting epoxy in the hole, and running the screw down into it before it hardens? I’m just guessing here, and in desperate need of some help! I’d hate to have to replace the valve, I just rebuilt it per your instruction video, and was working fine except for the spider gasket and nylon O ring under the handle, and after rebuilding it and trying to reassemble is when I found the one screw that won’t tighten. HELP!!!
Hi there. Depending on how bad it is you may need to replace the body. But to try to repair you can glue into the hole some little slithers of wood or plastic. Let that dry then screw it down. That will give the screw something to hold onto. That way you can still remove the screw later. MRT
If that later fails, you might be able to drill out the hole and screw in a self tapping nut (they have a hex shaped hole through their centre to let you screw it into the hole). Then for the appropriate size screw
That depends on if your filter is above or below water level. Also if you have isolation valves fitted to the lines. If below water level and no valves then yes water will flow freely. MRT
Yes see here: Instal new Spider gasket on Multi Port valve Sand Filter repair. Leaking down backwash line How to ua-cam.com/video/dN1BJXpgeog/v-deo.html
easy way to compress it is get longer 1/4 inch screws. put it on. the tighten the nut til its tight. then super easy to put the handle and drive the pin in
I could not resist the temptation to solve where the six positions of the valve are based on the internals. The six positions in anticlockwise order are: recirculate, backwash, closed, waste, filter and rinse. (winterize is just anywhere in between two settings)
Great job ! You saves me ! Quick question. When you put back the up arm and align the hole with the head, in which position the top arm is going or pointing to ? Thanks a lot.
So how do you clean up the super glue the next go round when you have to replace the gasket? I had to clean up super glue from the port and it took days, sandpaper, and even a drimmel.
ARTCARGAL If there was lots of glue it probably wouldn’t be super glue. Super glue just leaves a very slim film. It normally just scratches out w a flat screwdriver blade
This is all good and well unless the very thin plastic raceways that the gasket sits in are broken. The entire gasket raceway should be 1/4in stainless steel.
I bought replacement spider gaskets for my two valves because they were worn down but because either the installer or previous owner of my house used superglue it took me about 2 hours to remove 90% of the gasket. Getting the remaining 10% would have taken another 2 hours and I didn't want to damage the channel so I just pressed the new gasket down the best I could. What I gained from the new gasket I lost due to the uneveness caused by that 10%. I didn't even attempt the other valve. I instead of superglue, after pressing the gasket into all but the outside ring of channel, I tightened the lid to about 95%, turned on the water pumps, and backed off the lid screws to about 90%. At about 90% the water pressure seated the gasket and the spraying water turned into drips. Tightening to 100% made a complete seal and the gasket hasn't once been displaced even after thousands of valve adjustments. What I dealt with was likely much more superglue than you administer but it seems to me that no superglue works fine. I watched your video because I'm going to do the same (minus the superglue) so if you have a solution to the removal of a super superglued gasket please share and I will give this other gasket removal a shot. Thank you!
Patrick O'Neal Hi Patrick. I just put dobs of glue in. These scrape out fine. Yes I have scraped out many glued in gaskets. You must get the gasket flat or it won’t seal. I use a flat screwdriver that is the same width as the channel to prep the channel. I would also say that it must be glued. Otherwise it will pop out and be stretched or torn or get sand under it and leak.
Hi Mark, Yea this person used way way too much glue. I took both valves apart last night to clean and lube as you did and I want to thank you because they are like brand new! Couldn't be happier with the results! I've acquired more flat heads since my last gasket scraping attempt so hopefully I'll be well equipped on my next but until then all is working much better due to the well-functioning valve flow control
Superglue kills valves. New gasket sticks great, but when the gasket fails, it's cheaper to replace the whole valve than try for hours to dig the old gasket out.
Yes he forgot. It's called a "non-metallic bearing" and are there for a reason. I'm just waiting for the day when MPV's become EXTINCT because they are 40 year old technology and a constant source of aggravation.

When you say that the handle has to point to the hole is that on all multi port valves by Hayward?
It is actually true for all brands of mutiport valve. If they look like this and have six ports like this
Can this be repaired with the pool full of water and hoses connected? Or will I have water running all over the place?

That's exactly what the manufacturer does.
if you don't glue it, it will leak
