- Photographing the Andromeda Galaxy
I rented an Airbnb about 45-minutes away from my home to photograph the Andromeda Galaxy. I set up my camera and telescope under Bortle Scale class 4 skies, which is a lot darker than my light-polluted backyard at home.
My Image Processing Guide: bit.ly/astro-p...
The final image includes 60 x 3-minute exposures at ISO 1600 using my Canon EOS Ra camera. I stacked the individual exposures in DeepSkyStacker with dark, bias, and flat frames to calibrate the image.
The calibrated, 3-hour integration was then processed in Adobe Photoshop using the methods described in my image processing guide. Clear skies!

I did the same as you. The owner of the B&B was so excited about the telescope and the pictures, that he stayd till 4am. That was really nice and the nicest part of it, that he was a phycisist and me as a physic student :D
Damn that must have been so nice ! I'm kinda envious ngl haha
@@paulmarchi1393 how could we not be envious XD
Wow, that's all about it. Universe united us all.

Seeing that picture makes me amazed how much bigger this universe is than all of us, and how lucky we are to experience it
Andromeda contains 1 trillion stars 😮
Look for a video on UA-cam the privileged planet,

@Had Tobe Flat why would it be round you ask, well despite flat earthers best efforts, gravity still exist. And the South Pole exist as well.
I wanted to find a movie about Andromeda Galaxy..I come in here and what I see ... another talking head about how bad and bad it is
I sometimes feel that since this is our closest galaxy, if there are any intelligent beings on it, they might be taking pictures of our Milky Way galaxy and admire its beauty not knowing that we are doing the same here
oh they know
I don’t think we would be detectable to them, we have only had radio for a little over 100 years. So if we were beaming messages straight to them they are still 2.5 million light years away. If they got it and said hello back we would receive their reply in 5 million years!
Have you seen
How the universe is way bigger than you think
Search and see
cool thought
@@Aerostar509 they also might not even exist anymore even IF we saw evidence of sentient life. Such is the loneliness of intergalactic space.

Do you still believe earth is flat?
What's a joke
@Had Tobe Flat you guys wont understand
I'm outta here
Show me a proof that earth is flat
Is there any chance you could do a post production of how you got to the final image?
I bet the main thing to get it this good was fiddling around with colors for hours and hours
Sensational depth in that image. Feels almost like you’re floating there, at a midway point between our 2 galaxies. Beautiful!!
I remember a certain someone killing me at Cherry Springs for mounting a Redcat on an Orion EQ-G and being WAY over mounted.... when I saw your setup I lost it and cracked up thinking of that day! Looks like a great trip and a beautiful image!
That’s a really nice image.
I finally got a halfway decent Andromeda on a night like that a couple weeks ago. We have some friends that live in a bottle 5 and their back yard faces south into a cornfield- so there’s a huge amount of sky to work with. I’d love to build a remote observatory out there.
Just think, there's some guy in M31 out with the critters imaging the Milky Way.
Thanks Travor for taking us with you on this trip. Loved the story the video (cutting and music) and the pic @ the end!
Clear skies to you!

Glad you had a good time man! I live in Bortle 4 skies, and I absolutely love it. I have to warn you though, there's aperture fever and then there's dark sky fever. Even though I live in a Bortle 4, visiting Bortle 1 skies has given me the dark skies fever.
I can feel a dark sky fever coming on already!! :D
I'm trying to figure out what Bortle zone I live in. I'm about 7 miles from a small town (less than 15k pop) it's so dark at night I have run into large objects like the 55 gallon burn barrel. There is very faint sky glow in one direction less than 10% of the horizon.
I'm not sure if it would be Bortle 3 or 2.
amazing video as usual. assuming this was this past Friday, I was also imaging Andromeda and it was my first attempt at any astro photo. turned out really well thanks to all your videos.
Keep it coming!
Can we see the result?
@@irishbrutas9377 my insta is @jamesdinann
It is on there. thanks!
Excellent night for you! Glad the rain didn’t upset the plan. That photo is great too!
Trevor you should see the sky in the north of quebec during the winter, in high school i had the chance to be there one week during the fall and winter every years and it's a crazy experience to be there observing the stars
I'm lucky in that I've not long moved to class 4, although haven't been able to fully take advantage, mainly due to the weather and work. But I'm so looking forward to getting some decent time during the autumn/winter, especially as the rig sits right outside the summerhouse. Excellent final image as always!
I'm jealous of your starry skies🤤
Nothing could be happier when toke the photo of galaxy eventually!
Que belleza 😍👏 saludos de Argentina
Your so right my friend about the country. I grew up on a Farm and moved to the city about 20 years ago.
I find myself heading back to the farm at least once a month. Now thanks to you and few other Astro U Tubers I'm seeing the old place in a new way. Im out all night shotting Landscape and Deep Sky Astro and loving it. It's a bortal 4 and I also got a good Andromeda photo for my level of experience as well.
Please continue the inspiring work.
This literally took my breath away. I only have a cheap celestron, and can barely see the rings of saturn, but I will get to where I can take pictures like this. So incredible.
Absolutely stunning final photo. I don't ever think that feeling of awe I get from looking into the night sky will ever fade.
" Everything is going suspiciously well.!" Dude that was so funny......
Somehow your annual Andromeda videos are always the best! One of them tricked me into AP !
Gorgeous! I’ll be the first to contribute to the “Astrobackyard Country House Fund”!
Ha! Thanks Jeff! A guy can dream, right?? :)
Trevor do it! You won't be disappointed out in the country. My wife's farm is in Bortle 5 skies in Michigan and were building a house on the farm next year. Ive been fortunate enough to image all summer from their farm and its unreal. This video literally depicted my summer and its hard to describe. PS, you'll get used to the coyotes. Plus you can talk Ashley into letting you build an observatory!
I am excited for you Trevor and feel blessed to live in Bortle 5 skies...I know you've been at this for 10 years but you wouldn't know it because your passion shines through in each video! Great image!
awesome shoot !!!
I did the same in May after the 1st Lockdown here in France.
We went 1h driving far from home with AstroFriends.
We ended at 5am, in the midlle of corn fields.
New lockdown will begin tomorrow, time to make astro from balcony at the flat.
Then going out for 2-3 nights before Christmas.
I found possibly the best youtube channel today.
You made astrophotography my hobby.
Thnx and Love from India.
Keep doing such works.
Just Awesome and Mindblowing..
I moved back to the country after living in the city for 20+ years. Our municipality (Argyle, NS) has light pollution bylaws so hopefully it will stay that way for a long time. Now in Bortle 1.5 skies, I will never leave...
Amazing i wish i could live there
Man I remember when you dedicated a andromeda photo you took to your dad when he went to the hospital. That very video Is what got me into astrophotography and why I own the scope I do and why I want a mount I can actually take real astro photos with. I even got a old T3i so I can modify it instead of my T7i and try to capture the beauty of the universe like you. You are such an aspiring person bud. Keep up the great work/fun.
I have so much going on in my life with a new son and and my 9 year old daughter and a new mortgage, that I can't even begin to think about buying a mount to run my new scope on. And I didn't even get the eye pieces or the diagonal for it. Don't plan on looking through it though. Just pictures. I can't wait until I can afford that mount. The universe awaits. And I am going to spend many of nights just like this.
@@astroadventures3559 hi i also use a T7i for astro any way a good mount instead f a star tracker
@@deepastro7460 I ended up getting a star tracker, the star shoot C.A.T by Orion. And even with the dec bracket and counterweight it only holds 8.8lbs. But my scope (skywatcher 72mm apo doublet refractor) and just the T7i and skywatcher reducer/corrector on it is only 7.4lbs. But it trails bad. And I'm not sure If it's the incorrect spacing with the reducer/corrector or if that star tracker just can't do 7.3lbs good. But I do know I am extremely unhappy that I bought the 900 dollars worth of equipment that was made for each other and there is definitely spacing issues. The people at skywatcher said they had released a short tube 72ed version in 2019 and that they had since changed the length of the focus tube to correct it and I must have gotten the old one. Very disappointing. And by time I had clear skies and a chance to test it my 30 days was up on the return. Now I need a good mount to test further so I can eliminate that as a possible problem.
@@astroadventures3559 let me recommend you some the ioptron sky guider or the exoss 100 and the heq5 or try getting a used ioptron GEMS the are good
Wow!!! You should come to Banff, Beautiful clear nights with bortle 1 sky!!!!
Excellent. Watching weather reports and planning trips. I know the feeling.
I have a small country house in Bortle 2-3 here in Russia and for me as for astrophotographer this is one of my best decidion, not only due to astrophotography, but due to corona lockdown. This is incredible - you can shoot everything you want on color camera without any filters and see TRUE universe beauty
Can you imagine if one day humans become more conscious of light pollution and we advance enough to have cities and live in harmony on earth with little to no light pollution. Imagine how amazing life would be. Every night I look up at the ski and see some stars and yes it is beautiful, but I can't help to be frustrated that I live in a extremely light polluted area and cant actually see much. Anyway Love your videos man! i became passionate about the night sky and actually got a 8" dobsonian reflector because of your videos.
Spending a night outside alone under the stars with my telescope and camera is one of the highs of my life. As a city dweller it makes it extra special to drive out to a dark sky site. Fortunately my local astronomy club has a bortle 4 site only 75 minutes away that I try to get to one or two times a month. Shooting without any filters is awesome! Another stellar addition to your Astro collection.
I am addicted to your channel bro!! I have been watching your videos insanely. GREAT channel super nice content.
That is so incredible. Just beautiful.
Dude.... I'm just barely scratching the surface with learning astrophotography, and THIS shit BLEW MY MIND! Immediately sub'ed. Amazing work!!
absolute stunning image
Your pictures always blow my mind.. Impressive
That is an amazing image! I think the dream of living in the middle of nowhere with dark skies is something we all have. In the UK though .......price cuts most of us mere mortals out
I too share your passion for the rural wide open skies. Can't get enough of it.
Great video. As we all get thru these tough times, it's great for us to get the telescope and head out for a night out. And be safe. Never thought about an Air B&B. A great hobby to socially distance.
Loved how this video spent a bit more time on the final image! Really let me take it all in and appreciate the details. Great work!
I live way out in the Country and had a very close encounter with a ufo that is why I started astrophotography this guy is good I have learned most of my stuff watching these videos.
Just amazing! Thank you for taking the time to go out of town... spend the night and with your expertise, come back to show us a galaxy... wow... wow... wow... I could have stand there... with you and in awe! Thank for sharing.
I understand the precarious variables in the northern part of North America. Living in southern Utah has given me quite an edge on those variables. For one thing it’s dry humidity. I don’t even own a dew heater. Milder weather in the winter and when it’s summer, I go to the higher elevations to image. The weather here is very stable and it hardly ever rains. I have several dark sky sites at bortle 1 to go to. No one is around for miles. I just spent two days at one and it was fantastic. I did hear coyotes though. They never bother me. It’s just me and my scope and the starry sky, totally quiet and peaceful.
I really enjoyed this and an absolutely stunning image. Thanks for your hard work, Trevor.
Since little always the universe called my attention, I never expected to see how magnificent and beautiful is, thanks to you. Keep doing this videos.
Stunning! Even saw Cassiopeia (my personal favourite constellation :)
I was thinking to my self "This photo is going to be pretty great" and it still took me by surprise how amazing it was! That EOS Ra and dark skies seem to be an almost unbeatable combo great stuff as always Trevor!
Nice one, Trevor. Great to see the natural colours. This target is difficult for we Aussies - very low in the sky.
Amazing, congratulations on awesome M31 pictures! As astro amateurs, we know how hard is to find a good, dark viewing site. That's why we started building an international map of places for astronomy and astrophotography fans.
That last image is unbelievable beautiful
This is beyond beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing this!!
Thanks for sharing the fun! I miss going to the dark sites to image. Was always fun even if it was cold and tiring staying up all night.
the picture in the end is unbelievable. I remember this day, I went to work 6am when I looked to Michigan sky, I could see clearly pleiades. great day.
Awesome video. Thank you for taking the time to make this. Beautiful picture
Nice one Trevor! Cue Bruce Cockburn, “Going to the Country”. Missed seeing the histogram.
I live in a Bortle 4 zone in rural north Texas. There's a Bortle 2 zone just an hour away and I have been there four times in the past year. There's nothing like it!
Dude this video is a masterpiece
That’s amazing picture... Universe is incomprehensible!
We recently purchased 5 acres out in the country, on a hill, and it's a whole bortle level lower than where we are in town. I love the isolation and big open sky! Do yourselves a favor and jump on getting out under the dark skies, man! Thanks for the great video! :)
I let out a little gasp at 11:07. That's a heckuva reveal. Brilliant job, as usual!
Oh wow this is so amazing . always enjoy your videos. I know what`s coming at the end of the video a beautiful image.
I think there should be nights in all cities where lights are turned off for specific times. Just shut off the lights so people can see what they are missing.
My city shuts all lights from 10pm to 6am. It's more of a small village so that's why, but it would be so great to have that everywhere, anybody that would experience a milky way so bright it casts shadows would be immediately convinced about it
Wow, what a picture! Amazing!
So awesome when you get those nights that just tickle you from the inside out.
Amazing image, makes you wonder about your own relevance in the universe.
Sooo Beautyfull 😍 I love the Andromeda galaxy 🌌
This guy has the right idea: the mount is 10X more massive than the imaging equipment.
Great Job! I Love that Sharp Detail between that blue and purple; I have had lots of clouds here in lansing mi, its driving me nuts...I'm in the beginners stage, I've been manually tracking objects,(working my way up) in about 10 days I'll have a star tracker and a light pollution filter...I've been so excited trying to choose an object, I'm gonna pick an easy one for my first tracking session; I've watched all your videos and have learned ALOT! So thank you...GREAT PiCTURE !
CLEAR SKIES!!!!!!
I love in a class B3 dark sky area, it’s worth it out in the country by far... and the wildlife likes to visit often too!
Welcome to the country we live in Chesaning Mi with a bortle 4 it's so nice to be able to step out the door and get beautiful shots.
Wow, just... just wow.
Thanks for sharing this amazing experience!!
Wow what a breath taking image,I wish I could take a picture like that with my rig
That was astounding.... tohave a look at the galaxy that's going to collide with our galaxy and then reflecting of the outcome is mindbogling. Thankyou Thankyou and Thankyou
Stunning Trevor! I love a Bortle 4.5 but I have two street lights right in my face! It sucks! This is a beauty!

The beauty of this andromeda galaxy makes me feel so emotional 🌌⭐🌠⭐
Trevor, that was absolutely fantastic! I was so jealous, wish I could have been part of that amazing picture and evening. Something I would love to try but so expensive it's kind of out of reach. That has to be one of your best ones yet, certainly one of my favorites. Thank you for sharing, keep them coming.
The Raptor looks nice, I was about to order, and I noticed you put the guidescope connected only one side of the handle , it looks awkward. There is not flexure? Is that the only way to attach the guidescope?
Your channel made me brought a telescope. Your content is somehow the way I dreamed of enjoying my time. It's a simple duplet Celestron 500mm F5 but I know it is perfect to bring me those nebulas. My girlfriend is so excited she gave me a cup with horsehead printed. We are used to spending a long time looking up the skies. Thank you.
Oh wow! That was just awesome!
Wow what a great picture . good job
One time I was out in the mountains in PA and caught a glimpse of it, could see it with my eye but its just a tiny hazy cloud, but its an entire object outside our own Galaxy, 2.5 million light years away, billions of other stars, so awesome! Thank you!
