Well, my replacement mill showed up from SS. I'm sad to say it has the same issue as the first. Although it wasn't quite as bad, it's still unacceptable in my opinion. Long story short, the rollers are not parallel. I am still waiting to hear back from SS Brewtech. I would happily accept one that was only off by the advertised 10%, not the 35% they seem to be.

I realize this video might be a little negative, it's not my style or my intent. I'm a little frustrated, that is all. I also want to make sure anyone who's interested in purchasing is aware of what they potentially could be spending $850 usd on.

Thanks for this. They definitely should be in spec for a high cost mill. I hope you will try it out for a brew session and report on your thoughts from that perspective.
For that price I'd expect less than 5% machining tolerances. That there does not look like a quality product. Thanks for shedding some light on this. Hoping for an update on this in the future.
No problem I'm definitely disappointed 😔
did you try putting the mill rollers as tight as possible and then going for guage size selected?
Yes
Thanks for posting this, good to be informed, it is subtle but at that price point is not acceptable to have that difference. Hopefully they'll lower the price and or improve the quality.
No problem I really hope it's an isolated issue I really want to love the mill. I definitely hope it can be solved.
Great video. I hope SS Brewtech sees this video. It is unacceptable and to hear about their poor response time has given me pause to purchase the Unitank fermenter. SS Brewtech, you have competitors. Take care of your customers.
I would agree, I do understand that with the holidays they have been busy. I'll make an update video with the final outcome.
I've seen other reviews mentioning the same issue. For that much money, I expect some quality.
Exactly 🍻
Thank you for this video. There are others out there with same issue. I was considering buying this mill, I will wait until Ss gets it right with a Mill 2.0, 1st generations of most everything, always have kinks to iron out.
No problem at all🍻 I hope they get it fixed I really did want to love it. I'm personally going to wait for. The very recently announced Brewtools mill.
@@PortlyGentleman thank you brother, I'm going to check that out. Cheers!
Disappointing definitely expected more from SS and at that price it should be a much tighter tolerances. Curious if SSbrewtech took care of this or offered you a refund?
We're in the market for a grain mill and would love to get a quality one with hardened rollers but might go with the cheaper NB and a drill for now. If you find a quality one please post another video. Great video, very informative, thanks for posting.
I did get a full refund for both of the units they sent out! I’ve actually got the brand new Mozilla I’ve yet to do a review I’m working on it though 🍻
have you checked out the sieve test on this mill on the homebrewers association by The Modern Brewhouse?
I like this vid. No blue violet back light. I hope that in 2023 your vids will be without annoying UV light.
Haha I may have gotten a little out of control. You'll have to stay tuned 🍻
It does matter. If you’re paying top $$$ for it you expect top quality workmanship. It’s 8 times the price of my mill and I have less than 10% diff from left to right. You just expect more from SS.
I would agree, more troubling I bet The two that I have. Aren't the only two out there with the issue..
Yeah that's pretty bad. 0.040 ± 0.014 is a *35%* deviation. Honestly that's the delta between an fine and course crush from .031 to .045... no bueno. Did they ever make it right?
They took it back
@@PortlyGentleman Hi, I'm about to buy this grain mill, do you know if SS Brewtech had this fixed?
Hate to necro, but are you still using this mill?
Definitely not using it
sounds fair enough to me. $800US is good money for a mill - you want it to be perfect.
Perfection isn't always possible, but at least within advertised specifications!
@@PortlyGentleman yeah sure but how about the ability to adjust the roller position so even if it got out of alignment you could calibrate it.
@@StassBrewing Exactly there should be a way to do it. And honestly I've asked and haven't heard back about just that.
did they ever respond here?
I want up getting a second mill it also had the same issue I returned them both.
It looks like the screws on top when you were checking distance between rollers were not sitting flat. It seems for that price the workmanship is really a let down
It’s a shame this quality for $800, I’m looking for the Mattmill Master
I know I am really disappointed.
Got mine 3 days ago. Don’t mesure yet 😢
Let me know when you do ?
Did you measur eit?
Did you ever get any updates from SSB?
I wound up sending both of them back, SS would not admit fault or any sort of issue. I spoken to several other Brewers that are still having issues. With mills that were purchased recently.
Portly Gentleman guess it’s time Blichmann sends you their mill for testing!
@@willh7416 That would be interesting for sure I've seen the price of their mail.I found it a little concerning personally who's to say maybe it's going to be great 🤷🏻♂️
Portly Gentleman I was surprised they didn’t try to compete with SS directly on price, but they are posing their mill as a pro product. I guess that’s why. But for $200 more... if it it is that much more consistent. Who knows?
@@willh7416 Exactly only time will tell
Think I’ll stick with my Millars Mill and a DeWalt Drill.
That might be a good idea for now 😉
It is normal engineering for avarege 1000us dollars equipment. If it is 600 then I don't think there is a problem. Normal crushers have 2mm gap and wobbly rollers about 100 dollars. And their rollers wear out in 5 months (my usage is about 50kg per month)... etc.. Every 5 month I buy a new cheap malt roller (the popular ones which everyody knows...) If it comes to my country at 600 dollars I don't hesitate and will buy one.
I'll be damned if you're not a white, bearded Aaron Donald. How many sacks you got this year?
Lol he’s Only 6”1’ the only thing I’m sacking is the refrigerator !
@@PortlyGentleman Amen.
Also I picked up one of these on sale and the gap tolerance is great, less than .0015" difference, and it's actually tighter the middle, not the sides.
