if that gasket was still made of asbestos (even if it was aftermarket) I wouldn't break it into parts...BMW Classic (München) replied to me that they didn't use such toxic materials like asbestos after mid of 1985 anymore but who knows where this gasket came from.
@Zombie Head german E30 or in the US or elsewhere ? I've never seen such a sticker and I've possessed quite a lot of E30s in my life. The person who replied to me from BMW Classic München sort of guaranteed that they didn't use asbestos anymore after mid '85. so either they just lied to me (I specifically asked about 1986 cars though which is still irrelevant in regard to what answer they gave me) or there might be a different reason for yours. (?)
