Lovely bark texture, should be more popular among us "tree nerds" bonsai or not. I think you should use that method with paper in more videos as it really enhance the view on the branches you consider take away or prune. 😀
@@PSPMHaestros and nice, small leaves. 🤷♂️ it might have to do with the fact that they don't make great indoor plants, but also can't survive through the winter. That's what killed mine this winter. I'm gonna try again this year.
I made the mistake within the first two very eager months of my Bonsai journey of uprooting and potting a 3 foot high, well developed Rosemary bush I had planted over 5 years ago (without bonsai in mind) in the middle of summer. it promptly died however I have planted a new one with the hope I can use the original ones dead wood as a Tanuki. Very pleased to see someone else pursuing rosemary for bonsai.
Agree with you that rosemary plants do make great candidates for bonsai design. Enjoyed watching your lesson on how you worked with the particular plant.
That was impressive. Just two sessions covering 7 months or so, you tamed quite the beast! Rosemary sure can be tricky and sometimes frustrating. Thank you for demonstrating that sticking to the process/principles works so well, along with patience. You’re the man, Nigel.
Lovely species to work with, once you have figured them out. Here in the Netherlands they do really well, being outside year round. I even have a little 8 tree forest with them, that I put together about 5 years ago.
Rosemary is the English form of Rosmarinus, the Latin word meaning sea dew. It gets the name because it originally grew along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the first sign of land to ancient sailors was the smell of rosemary being carried on the wind. Your plant is reminiscent of that origin, with its branches twisting around as if they had been buffeted since it was a seedling by salty sea winds.
Nicely done, I like the way it looks now. Rosemary are wonderful to have but they are wild. Now that you've pruned yours, I will attempt to prune mine which is on the the patio. The shrub is still alive considering December and January's unusually cold snap with the wind chill. They look pretty sad. Thanks for this lesson Nigel.
Those sedums make for a really cool soil cover similar to moss but easier tot ake care of, you just have to keep them trimmed and plant the cuttings so it grows as bushy as possible
Por lo que estoy viendo, los esquehes fueron muy bien. Te saliste con la tuya y te quedaste con el árbol para diseñarlo como bonsai 🙂. Salud, Nigel. 🙇♂️
I would like to see this rotated about 30 degrees clockwise; I think there is a very exciting tree emerging there! Rosemary doesn't get as much love in bonsai as it possibly deserves, perhaps because it doesn't lend itself to the refined and majestic "typical" bonsai. It is the Wild Child, with the odd taste in music and slightly startling dress sense! But it is very forgiving of mistakes, and readily propagated with even the mistakes capable of producing magic in the kitchen. What's not to love?!
i have a rosemary i startd from a single rooted sprig. It has always grown direct sideway with shoot bushing out and up. for some reason that origi al trunk just always grew sideways evan after repoting and adjusting. I am indoors and have had odd lighting. now i have a bunch of nicce lights. it appears very healy. its in a 5 gallon plastic pickle bucket thats been cut down a bit to like 3.5 gallons. id like to repot it not sure how to go about it. Its almost 2 years old.
Hi Nigel, I was wondering about repotting rosemary. Any specific thoughts on what you do? Is it just the timing, where early spring is just too cold, causing most to have through with rootwork?
Nigel I have a huge rosemary tree which I've had a go at turning into bonsai , I'd like to send you a couple of pictures of it so maybe you could give me a few tips on what steps I can take next on it , how can I send you pictures to hear your opinion .👍🏻
I had a basil plant i was pruning into a tree like form for almost 2 years It was looking pretty nice and getting thick and the kitchen was full of dried basil leaves all the time😂 But sadly one summer we were on vacation and it got too dry and died.
It is so funny how much restraint you are showing when pruning your wife’s Rosemary. You can tell how much you are holding back, you want to prune a lot more but you dare not kill your wife’s plant. I’m guessing if it wasn’t your wife’s plant then it would have gotten a more severe pruning
Hello Nigel, great video as always. I was hoping you could give me some advice on one of my trees. It's my first bonsai so it has a bit of sentimental value to me and I don't want to make any rash decisions and it not survive. It would be a lot to type out for a UA-cam comment, would you mind if I sent you an email?
I love rosemary so much. I'm excited to get my own this year. Such beautiful bark.
Me too! How beautiful and magnificent to have

I'm surprised you don't see more rosemary bonsai
Here's one: ua-cam.com/video/T5d5n_CjHAs/v-deo.html
Me too, they tend to have really nice and wild looking trunks

Magnificent Rosemaary tree!
The paper behind the branch is very helpful!
the recap was very cool. love your videos. long time viewer and you're the reason I finally started doing bonsai 3 years ago
and the isolation with the paper. you really went all out on this one!!!
Nice to hear, happy growing!!!
Hi Nigel.. using the paper to highlight what u doing is such a good idea... we can see better 👍🏻

This is The Witch Tree… gnarly, twisty, full of magic!
Very true, it's quite spooky looking!
I'm so inspired right now, thank you so much, Nigel!
Love the wild twisty look! 😍

Looks great Nigel. Makes me think of a gnarly old olive tree!

Looking good Nigel!! Rosemary can make great Bonsai.
WOW ! GREAT WORK !
Good Job... I like, thanks.

Good name for the Rosemary: Wild Thing
Great video, really informative

I lost a rosemary plant this winter too that I believe just dried out. I'll have to get a replacement this spring.
Rosemary = beginner's juniper 😉
you got lots of rosemary after pruning haha!
Thanks! very nice plant :) I'm going to prune mine soon too ^^
When it's time to prune a rosemary, you need to prepare to cook a lot of potatoes :-D
rosemary bonsai👍👍
Can i join for a delicious potato meal? 😋 Or can u send some to the Netherlands haha. Great video Nigel 👍🏼🌱
It looked good trimmed up

My rosemary died this winter :( gonna retry this spring!!

Note the vid linked in the description where he showed the repot. Just click on it.

I’m surprised your rosemary didn’t put out aerial roots!
my rosemary stays outside and we've had -18C and it's doing fine, but it's in the ground tho :D
It would have bloomed, if you left a few branches unpruned. I just love the way rosemary bloom.
Do you have Maple Bonsai?
What species of Sedum is that?
👍👍👍
Do you put the rosemary in mashed potato?
👍🍎

Aw great story with sad ending. I didn’t even know they/herbs could be trees!
I bet your hands smelt nice after that haha
Your hair could do with a prue 😂
It always does!!
