Edward IV? I don't think so. I think Tywin's much more similar to Richard, Duke of York (Edward IV and Richard III's father) and maybe the Earl of Warwick. Edward was (in his campaigning years) a young, towering, strong, boisterous and decadent frontline general fighting to avenge a fallen father. He has much stronger parallels in Robert Baratheon and Robb Stark.
EDIT: Derp I wasn't up to the bit where they mentioned Edward I. Well I'll leave my comment there anyway because I think the other stuff I said was still right.

  • @owenleal

Id always imagine that Tywin looked upon the Stark children with envy, even though he opposed them. You had Robb, the brilliant, fiery young general who bested Tywin multiple times and did the memory of his father proud. You had Arya, a quick witted and precocious child who picked up and applied information with ease and had it in her to orchestrate and carry out some brutal murders worthy of Tywin himself. You had Sansa who was a real trooper and took all kinds of abuse on the chin, from Cersei, from Joffery, indirectly from Tywin who married her off to Tyrion and bore them with stoism at first for the sake of her family and then for the sake of her own survival once her family had been killed, which isnt something she should have had to do, but no doubt Tywin would have admired that, and you had Jon Snow, a natural leader like his brother, but quieter and more reserved, a man who could inspire and unite staunch generations long enemies to work together under his command, who faced down white walkers and giants and his own men when need be a young guy with the heart of a hero in the truest sense. These were Tywin's ideal children, but the tragedy is that he had no idea how to be the kind of father who could raise his children to be what he wanted them to be. It never occured to him that he could do things differently, that he could nurture his children and teach them the values he cared about, like discipline and duty and love of family through love and respect rather than through fear and lecturing. Ned's children looked to him as an example long after he was dead. Meanwhile, Cersei, Jaime and Tyrion viewed Tywin with resentment and frustration and because of that did everything in their power to rebel against his plans for them.

Jon is a complicated "Bastard" with a lot of foul actions which caused him to get killed.
On the other hand Jamie was one of the best swordsman in whole westeros. And he was kinda his ideal child for a long time, till he developed his character later in the books.
But if we only take the show as a source, yeah could be right.

I think Tywin is most like Edward I. Edward's father, Henry III., was as weak and troubled by other houses as Tywin's father was challenged by the Reyns of Castamaere. Like Tywin Edward had to fight for his father while his father was still king. Edward I had the lover of his gay son, Edward II, banished, much like Tywin treated Tyrion's wirst wife.
John of Gaunt is also a good comparison, firstly because of his title (Duke of Lancaster = Lannister). But I think he resembles Tyrion more than Tywin. Like Tyrion he was the uncle of young Richard II. who was cruel and believed to be mad (=Joffrey). John of Gaunt was hated by the Londoners but helped his nephew at rebellions (like Tyrion helped to defend Kings Landing). In fact there was a rebellion of peasants in London who killed a bishop, much like the peasants in Kigs Landing are killing the High Septon.
John of Gaunt's son Henry II got into trial and had to go to France for a while, just like Tyrion had to flee to Essos.
I think Warwick the Kingsmaker inspired either Baelish (opportunistic, the man behind the Civil war, gets power by marriage) or Roose Bolton (betrays the Starks/ Yorks and sides with the Lannisters/ Lancasters).

GRRM was also inspired by the series of novels entitled "the accursed kings", a historical drama about the french monarchy in the 14th century. He even referred to it as the "original game of thrones". Many characters in got are inspired by real life characters we see in those novels. Namely, cersei bears a striking resemblance of temperament with the queen Isabella, the "she-wolf of France". While i agree tywin bears certain similarities with Edward I, i would say the king Philip IV is much more similar. He is surnamed "The Iron King" for his inflexibility and ruthlessness, notably with the way he organised the dismantlement of the Knight Templars and the plundering of their riches. There is a scene in the 1st novel that puts emphasis on Philip's particularly cold gaze. Sitting at his council table, one of his ministers feels uncomfortable being stared at by the king after saying something displeasing. He then proceeds to retract himself to avoid the awkward situation. Doesnt this ring a bell about a certain anecdote in one of GRRM's novels? ;)

I don't think it has ever been confirmed, but I'd imagine the manner of Tywin's death was influenced by one chronicler's recording of the death of King Edmund Ironside, who claimed that he was shot with a crossbow whilst on the privy.

It‘s almost entirely on Tywin (and to a lesser degree Cersei) that it all goes to shit. He can‘t get them to get along even a little bit and I think ultimately he can‘t accept the fact that Tyrion is the one who takes after him the most.

    • @lycaonpictus9662
      @lycaonpictus9662 5 років тому +18

Julius Caesar didn't have much in common with either Tywin or Stannis.
Caesar was a highly charismatic man, reportedly second only to Cicero in his skill with oratory, and even rivals praised his wit. He could be vain, was a womanizer who bedded both foreign queens and the wives of most his rivals, but could be magnanimous with his Roman enemies. Most of the Senators who fought against him in the civil war were pardoned.
Tywin & Stannis were both skilled militarily (though they don't match Caesar's brilliance), but neither had his charisma or skill with oratory. Tywin & Stannis are both very stern men in comparison. Tywin perhaps had some of Caesar's vanity, but neither Tywin or Stannis were magnanimous. Put Stannis or Tywin in Caesar's place in the civil war and there would have been lots of executions and proscriptions. They'd have much more in common with Sulla in that respect. Neither Tywin or Stannis had a reputation for taking a lot of lovers either.

So your hypothesis is that the Kingdom of Scotland would have dissipated had Edward II been a stronger King. That would require a massive discussion to argue your case, you could probably draw up a thesis on it with lots of research. Of course you are not going to do all of that for a youutbe comment, nor would i expect you to. My point is, think about what you are saying before you draw to a conclusion. How do you know this for sure, what sort of evidence have you looked at to come to that conclusion. We all have thoughts which explode in our brains, and that's fine. But it's ignorant to believe something until you explore it and validate it in such a way that you could convince someone else to believe you and answer any questions people challenge you with.

Not really. England could've probably held it for a few more decades, maybe a century, but the geography of the area combined with England's focus in the centuries to follow being given to conflicts in mainland Europe such as France as well as the various crusades for Jerusalem would make Scotland (at least in its majority) very difficult to maintain regardless of what type of ruler was on the throne.

I dont buy that Lannister is based on Edward Longshanks. Richard Plantagenet of York was the father of Edward IV and Richard III; he was considered the most competent man in the kingdom but was not actually King. I cant remember which POV character recalls a visit to court as a child and seeing a man on the Iron Throne taking petitions, the POV though it was the king, later to realize it was Tywin.
And this lady at (1:00) says Edward I was devious...really? Edward I was one of the most chivalrous Kings England ever had, I know you all think his actions in Braveheart disprove this but there is no evidence that Edward ever killed nobles like in the movie.

Guys I don't think lots of you are being fair with Tywin in regards to Tyrion, for starters in the books Tyrion doesn't look like someone who could very well be the brother of Jaime just a couple feet shorter, he's like a goblin from lotr with mismatched eyes and blonde and black hair that hardly looks human especially post nose injury. I'm saying this because Tywin's wife who he loved like no other and was supposedly the one thing that you make him crack a smile didn't simply die giving birth to Tyrion but it was hinted in the books that the Mad King made moves at her too (I wouldn't go as far as to say that Tyrion is implied to be the Mad king's just that it's a lot less obvious that he's a Lannister in a smaller version) and with all the incest and the way the mad king himself was a child like that would potentially bring to Tywin's mind that old king.
Other than that, both in the books and in the show (especially in the show) Tywin is surprisingly fair with Tyrion all things considered. He, in no way, expects more of Tyrion than he does of say Cersei. He puts on some ground rules "Stop your drinking, stop your whoring, stop your mean remarks" etc etc and Tyrion doesn't do a single one for a single moment. Tywin did say that whole "You'll never get casterly rock cause you're a beast" or something along those lines but being fair again, Tyrion had just done all the shit Tywin had told him not to and he's quite simply not the son he wants Casterly Rock to go to. Robert Baratheon didn't give his brother Stannis what he wanted either and we're not saying "Robert Baratheon mistreated Stannis cause he's an ugly piece of shit" we just accept that Bobby-B didn't want to give Stannis the damn castle.
In regards to Tysha, yeah that one was harsh. I dunno, I suppose we can chalk it up to it being far rougher times and Tywin being a brutal piece of shit too. It's weird though, if you really think about it why would Tywin truly mind it so unbearably much if Tyrion who he supposedly never liked married a random ? You could definitely argue that "well he's still a Lannister" and that's what I'm more inclined towards too though it's not impossible that this means that Tywin didn't ever truly consider Tyrion as anything but his son and thus was held to the same expectations as any son of his would be.
Anyways, tldr: Tywin did nothing wrong to Tyrion (Except the Tysha ordeal)
